Re: The Politics Thread
Here's a MAGA trying to alter the culture of Hawaii.
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2024/12/1 ... wVSkxUy34Q
Red state believers feel like they gotta change the culture they never belonged in. I remember when I was in Europe, my European friend told me as a sarcastic joke that all Americans are bilingual (we both knew that all Europeans can speak multiple languages even English), they speak good English and bad English. So, this lady from Florida minus her google translate can speak southern accent English and arrogant English.

Re: The Politics Thread
Trump sues Des Moines Register for publishing poll that shows Trump trailing Harris before the election. Trump cannot let anything get in the way of his narcissism, he must always be the winner. But this will the effect Trump is looking for:
1. Media companies, especially newspapers are struggling, they will be very careful in their reporting. It's legal repression of 1st amendment and press freedom.
2. Afraid of angering the emperor, newspapers will be unlikely to cover negative stories and the corruption that will recommence with Trump's second term.
3. Suppressing press freedom is authoritarianism.
A president, a public figure with enormous power, should be prohibited from filing lawsuits that may violate the first amendment.

Re: The Politics Thread
Post pandemic, the economy is roaring, comparatively speaking in comparison to other OECD countries. Unemployment is low, inflation is under control and falling, and asset prices are stable. Bringing down inflation while avoiding a recession is an economic miracle. Paul Volcker brought down inflation in the 70's by throwing the economy into a recession with 11 percent unemployment. So Powell and the Biden administration are to be commended.
And now, we get to watch the train wreck from the bleachers. Trump's threats of tariffs, mass deportations, mass federal layoffs, deregulation, and tax cuts leading to a worsening of an already high deficit is going to drive us into a ditch. This political uncertainty has already made economic forecasters abandon their 2025 forecasts. If there is any truth to embrace, it's that uncertainty is not good for the economy.
WTH were voters thinking?

Re: The Politics Thread
For all the articles over why Democrats lost the election, here it is in a nutshell:
A family of four lives in an outlying suburban community in a metro area. Dad drives a 75k pickup truck that gets 12 mpg. Mom drives a 70k giant SUV that also gets around 12 mpg. The vehicles are financed for 72 months and depreciated value after year two. Dad commutes 90 minutes each day and is always complaining about gas prices. Dad and mom have two kids and live in a 3000 sq ft house that they over paid for in 2022. They hoped mortgage rates will go down so that they can refinance, but rates aren't going down. They filled their 3000 sq ft house with furniture that they couldn't actually afford. Nonetheless, they replaced their 65 inch tv with a new 72 inch OLED tv after just two years and always buy the latest cell phones and tablets when they come on the market. The kids are getting ready for college in a few years, and dad and mom have no money set aside to help with tuition. Dad only takes the minimum contribution to his 401k and is getting worried about retirement.
Your average American is over-leveraged (household credit card debt and non-mortgage debt has risen significantly since 2016). When eggs reached 8 dollars a dozen, our family freaked out and voted for Trump, who promised everything plus the moon.
Things are going to get worse for the family.
I find that it's human nature for people to blame someone else for their difficulties, I hear it at work all the time. Blame somebody else. And then listen to the snake oil salesman who promises the moon and places the blame on dirty poor migrants for their poor choices but then he fails to deliver.

Re: The Politics Thread
Watch out!
The chief clown isn't even Emperor yet he and his non-elected court jester Elon Musk are about to shutdown the government during Christmas! Hooray! I have a bleacher seat reserved for the start of the circus and what a circus it will be.
Coupled with a FED calling for fewer interest rate cuts next year, Trump's tariff threats to possibly trigger a trade war ( Canada's finance minister has resigned over this), and the threat of a government shutdown greater risk and uncertainty will take a toll on everyone's 401-K.
The Emperor in waiting needs to STFU and let Congress do its job. He's six times bankrupt for a reason.

Re: The Politics Thread
How Musk is trying to control the Republican party from Heather Cox Richardson.
Musk is a clown. What WAS a surprise was that on Wednesday, billionaire Elon Musk, who holds billions in federal contracts, frightened Republican lawmakers into killing the continuing resolution by appearing to threaten to fund primary challengers against those who voted for the resolution. “Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in 2 years!” he tweeted. Later, he added: “No bills should be passed Congress [sic] until Jan 20, when [Trump] takes office.”
Musk’s opposition appeared to shock President-elect Donald Trump into speaking up against the bill about thirteen hours after Musk’s first stand, when he and Vice President–elect J.D. Vance also came out against the measure. But, perhaps not wanting to seem to be following in Musk’s wake, Trump then added a new and unexpected demand. He insisted that any continuing resolution raise or get rid of the debt ceiling throughout his term, although the debt ceiling isn’t currently an issue. Trump threatened to primary any Republican who voted for a measure that did not suspend the debt ceiling.

Musk is an un-elected clown, who gave him the power to speak for the people? Musk spent 250M on Trump's campaign, the billionaires are buying government so they can get their tax cuts, federally funded projects, and deregulation. Pres Musk and his flunky Trump want the debt limits removed. They opposed the bipartisan bill because it had restrictions on the debt limit that they want removed. Why? So they can cut taxes on the already rich. It's tough being the worlds richest man.

Re: The Politics Thread
We are already an oligarchy. The moneyed control large sectors of the private economy and the government. Biden's kneeling to Israel and Trump's kneeling to Musk are current examples. To restore our democracy, we need to tax the wealth and power of the oligarchs, break up the monopolies, restore progressivity of the income tax, and pass an estate tax with bite. If not, we'll continue the slide to authoritarianism and national failure.
Currently, with so many write-offs and loopholes, the rich effective tax rate is low, and the bulk of taxes are paid by the middle class.

So, Rep. Kay Granger, do you believe in the seniority system in Congress?

Musk influence only shows that Trump can one, be bought, and two, is easily controlled by the oligarchs. Is this what you want America? The disabling of our voting democracy.

Re: The Politics Thread
The House Ethics Committee report on former FL Rep. Matt Gaetz released today. Yes, that Matt Gaetz, who denied all allegations and for whom the political right's mouthpieces called another "witch hunt".
The House Ethics Committee found evidence that former Rep. Matt Gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women for sex or drugs on at least 20 occasions, including paying a 17-year-old girl for sex in 2017, according to the panel’s report on the Florida Republican released Monday.
The committee concluded in its bombshell document that Gaetz violated Florida state laws, including the state’s statutory rape law, as the GOP-led panel chose to take the rare step of releasing a report about a former member who resigned from Congress.
“The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress,” panel investigators wrote.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, this is the kind of person that Trump places his faith in? Only the "best". Secondly, why did the House leadership attempt to bury the report? And finally, why hasn't the DOJ sought charges? It appears that he is guilty of statutory rape.
Do you see the difference in the corruption? Al Franken was made to resign after sexual allegations, yet Gaetz was permitted to remain in the House, was protected by the GOP leadership, not asked to resign, and after evidence of wrongdoing, the report was buried.
The GOP, the same party that brought you another paragon of virtue, George Santos.

Re: The Politics Thread
What is amazing is that Gaetz is the man that Trump wanted to be Attorney General of the United States, the highest ranking law enforcement official in the US.
LMAO, you cannot make this shet up!
