The Politics Thread

Post by ubercow »

I'm not a fan of unending political discourse, but I understand it's importance in society today. The general discussion forum has been turning into just a forum full of political posts so to reign it in, just this single thread will be allowed to discuss political topics. From this point on, any new political posts not in this thread will be locked, merged with this post, and/or deleted.

A reminder to keep it civil and that all of the SportsHawaii's Rules at still in place on this thread.

It's a good idea to have just one main topic instead of other related subtopics. I was a poster on the Hawaii Threads (now nonexistent) where the moderator was a stickler for creating new specific subtopics. I wanted to post in the old threads topics so that the posters of the past could be read and not be forgotten.

When political transgression are numerous, is it to anyone's benefit to place them all in one thread? I am not sure. Many hide their heads in the sand and refuse to look up, placing all transgressions in one thread makes it easier to keep one's head buried. It's cool though.

The Trump transition team is compiling a list of senior current and former U.S. military officers who were directly involved in the withdrawal from Afghanistan and exploring whether they could be court-martialed for their involvement, according to a U.S. official and a person familiar with the plan.

Officials working on the transition are considering creating a commission to investigate the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, including gathering information about who was directly involved in the decision-making for the military, how it was carried out and whether the military leaders could be eligible for charges as serious as treason, the two sources said.

“They’re taking it very seriously,” the person with knowledge of the plan said.

{Not sure what they hope to find. Has any military withdrawal gone perfectly? Was the Vietnam withdrawal a thing of beauty? This is just one more politically motivated investigation and indicative of moral decay and failing empire. Sad.]

As Trump nears his second term, it's helpful to see how previous GOP "investigations" have yielded in terms of indictments.

Four special counsel investigations into the Clintons, indictments? Nada. Cost 79.4 million dollars.
The Ukraine/Burisma Biden investigation. Indictments? Nada
An investigation into the lack of border security, indictments? Nada
Hunter Bidens laptop, indictments? Nada
The weaponization of the Federal Government, indictments? Nada
Promised investigations into totally corrupt Obama administration, Nada.
John Durhams years long investigation into massive political wrongdoing by the FBI in the Russia investigation, indictments? One for lying, that was found not guilty. Cost? Over 6.5 million.

So how many tens of millions of taxpayer money has been spent on these investigations that have yielded nothing. But what is apparent is this, the protestations of corrupt Dem government keeps the republican base focused on unproven Dem "corruption" and their blood on boil; second, it has rained down tens of millions in fees to GOP connected legal firms, and lastly and has measurably harmed the political fortunes of Clinton, Biden, and Obama with no accountability to the investigators.

Meanwhile, we have PHOTOS of boxes of top secret documents sitting in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom. Secondly, we have the current GOP House burying the House Committee's investigation into sexual assault and trafficking from the public, Matt Gaetz, the focus of the investigation is to be the nation's top legal appointment. Can you say CORRUPTION

So passepartout, how much do you think the US spent on investigating Hunter Biden and trying to tie whatever he did to his father? Why are James Comer and Jim Jordan the two most worthless POS in the US House? Oh wait, let's not forget MTG who is probably legally brain dead. BTW, you mentioned several countries you were looking at. Ever consider Bali?

And Trump pulled troops out of Syria. I heard that the us was spending close to 300 million a day in Afghanistan. Any truth to that?

Thank you for allowing a Politics thread. Just wondering if there should be two, since we are Hawaii focused. Kind of like sports. Some guys like HS football, some guys like college. And some like NFL.

It was reported that Special Counsel David Weiss spent 3.4 miilion dollars in six months on the Hunter Biden investigation for the tax and firearms charges. Unsure if the House must disclose how much it spent on investigating the Bidens as I can find nothing. Republicans, when in power, always use their power to investigate the incumbent Democrat or their chosen nominee. They have nothing to lose, they give millions in business to the GOP legal firms, damage the reputation of the incumbent Dem or their nominee ( tell me if any indictments were filed on Clinton, Obama, or Biden ), keeps their poorly informed tribe spellbound, and they never get called on spending taxpayer money on frivolous politically motivated sideshows. They really have nothing to lose, the voters still put them in office. They have been doing the same shet for decades with no accountability.

Comer and Jordan are blind partisans, many believe that Trump is sent by the divine god to save America.

My grandfather immigrated from Portugal in the late 19th C to the Big Island. Portugal allows citizenship through a grandparent. I'll need his birth certificate from his birthplace, Ponta Delgada, Azores and pass a Portuguese language test. In doing so, the south of Spain looks promising, with a Portuguese passport I could live and work anywhere in the EU. I''ve driven all over Europe so i know what I can expect living there, I more closely align to European values than that Americans have shown in this election. The Mrs is filipino/chinese and we thought about the Phils, most specifically Davao City. We also like Thailand. Also I'd like to build a house in Ka'a'awa, I have this romanticized ideal of waking up in the morning picking my own mangoes and papayas in my yard as I did in my youth. Hawaii is just so expensive. Been to Bali twice and Java once, I found it pleasant but I'd miss American culture, football games on TV and Jimmy Stewart westerns.

Moving abroad now is unlikely, I'm 65 and not quite ready to retire, moving abroad means retiring. Now we are thinking of a blue state with a large concentration of college graduates and free of heat and hurricanes, and Vancouver WA is looking pretty good right now.

I can understand this. Although growing up in Hawaii and learning the ways of the world through diving, surfing, playing ball and good friends, there are so many principles that I loved about Europe when I was living there. This was in the late 80's. I was working for a multinational. You had to bag your own groceries and recycled your beer bottles, something the US just started maybe 20 years ago? The guys I worked with told me that you don't need psychiatrist there because if you have a problem in Europe, you just go have a beer with your colleague or friend. They were all willing to listen and not judge. They also had socialized health care long before the ACA. They joked about Reagan being nothing more than a TV cowboy and that Gorbachev was the hero in eliminating the cold war. I had a colleague originally from the US who after getting laid off decided to stay in Europe and find opportunities there. Apparently, he and his wife decided to just travel all over and I was sorry to hear of his passing about two years ago in Croatia. He had been retired for what I guess would have been 15 years before his passing. Anyway, I researched Bali and you do have to pay US and State taxes. Vancouver sounds cool because you're state tax free and you can shop in Portland to eliminate sales tax.

I am proud to say that I was raised in a multicultural paradise like Hawaii, a rare benefit. Like you, I was surprised that one had to bag your own groceries in your own bag and segment trash according to its recyclability, it was most evident in Italy. I was told and messaged many times that the three trash bins were for different trash articles and not to be mixed. European health care is superior, universally provided, excellent quality, and half the cost of the US in percentage of GDP spent. Sorry to hear of your friend, I envy his wanderlust in a beautiful area like Western Europe. As for Bali, culturally attractive but getting really crowded with, especially in certain areas like Ubud. But the dollar goes really far anywhere in Indonesia. The Mrs and I collect art from all our travels, we visited Yogyakarta for its rich art culture, and while there Borobodur. You can get a beautiful european inspired hotel, like the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta for $59 a night, or The Duta Guest House for $18. Beautiful properties, I love how the Indonesians, and to a lesser extent the Thai's, incorporate lush gardens in their living spaces to enhance their living areas.

I think you turned on a lot of people where they might make their next trip. I met only one other local when I was in Europe and he was from Hilo and happily married and was there for the last 20 years after serving in the military. Whenever I came across US nationals from the mainland in Europe, I really got turned off because unlike people from Hawaii who have grown up in a multicultural environment, they are just too ethnocentric. A lot of people just don't know how to behave in a foreign environment.

McMahon? It can't be the WWE McMahon. Yep, that's the one. Then, I want to see a Trump vs. Putin stretcher match in the squared circle. Streaming on Netflix. Then, I would subscribe.
