What was your guys thoughts on every weight this past weekend at officials?
Re: 2024-2025 Wrestling
Officials was quite interesting this past week. Some matches went as expected and others not quite as much. Here are some of my quick thoughts:bigbreaker808 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2024 10:10 pm What was your guys thoughts on every weight this past weekend at officials?
- 106 Hotema(KLN) wrestled a great match. Despite Loughlins(MIl) injury will be a steady competitor. Also, freshman Moore(KSK) is someone to look out for as well.
- 113 Woode(NAN) displayed his dominance as a freshman. Thai(PEC) also dominating his side of the bracket. Kalaukoa(CAS) taking a firm 3rd but falling short from the previous two.
- 120 Kamakaala(KAH) proving himself in his match against La Grande. Bicoy(PEC) has been having a rough time with the likes of Vilavong(CAM) up until the end of the match. Hao(KSH) very much still in contention.
- 126 Although not full of powerhouses Corpuz(MOA) and Giron(LEI) will be leading and battling all season.
- 132 Chang(KSK) and Berger(STL) dominating their sides of the brackets. We did not get the match that we all wanted but they will definitely meet again. Abernathy(KSM) also looking very nice.
- 138 Very competitive weight class. Torres(KLN) and Tauyan(LEI) had a great match and proved their skill.
But dont count out Gold(FAR).
- 144 Taam(MOA) pushing for the 4x will be battling Shigemoto(MIL) all season. McKenzie(KSK) seemed off only placing 4th. Iwankiw(KON) could be a new challenger).
- 150 Mikah(KSM) yeah…
- 157 A bunch of state placers and seniors. Takitani(BAL) a very skilled wrestler having a dominate win over Comstock(WAI).
- 165 Goeas(CAS) as expected continued his dominance. Gave us a close match with Passetti(MAU) in the semis. Paclib(KSK) injured will be interesting to see how he plays into this.
-175 Buelow(PUN) and Nishida(KSK) share that mat again. A close match that can go either way in the future.
-190 Maira(KON) absolutely dominating everyone. Harbottle(KSK) only placing 5th sort of a shock. Hussey(LAH) and Kanoa(KAH) placing well and having some dominance.
- 215 Burton(CAS) a very skilled wrestler. Will be interesting to watch him wrestle through this season. Kaumavae(MOA) placing 2nd struggled in finals. 3rd and 4th were close.
- 285 Peau(WAI) a skilled wrestler with great cardio. Miller(KSK) performing poor and FF the second day is a shock. Still a competitive weight and with the unpredictability of 285 will be interesting to watch.
Let me know some future predictions regarding the competitiveness of the current rosters and placers.

Re: 2024-2025 Wrestling
This is my top 10 takeaways from the officials tournament
Girls
1. 110 Wakinekona. She is the real deal and not as much competition for her at 110. Could be a 4 timer.
2. 115 Kaloni Brown. Not on anyone’s radar. Destroyed good competition in Baldwins Gantala and Kamehamehas Hokoana.
I saw her win the Pa’ani challenge last year then went to the Moanalua duals where she was pinned by Fong. Never heard of her again because she was only 8th grade. She will be a 4 timer.
3. 120 Tatiana Paragas. Huge win at 120. Even in a low scoring match, looked dominant against Kalamau.
4. Baldwin girls. They returned almost everyone. I thought they didn’t have the numbers to match up with KSK or Moanalua but they were within 6 of Moanalua. And I think I saw 6 in the finals.
5. Moanalua girls win. I thought they had too much holes in their lineup to win officials. With Nishida out and an early MFF by Hokoana, Moanalua had enough to repeat as officials champions. Moanalua still has 3 more major point getters to insert into their lineup that I know of. Ramos(110), Kukonu ?, and Asing (Hwt).
Boys
1. 113 Analu Woode. Lived up to the hype. Will be a 4 timer. Closest competition was Jaden Tai of PC. 14-0. Biggest question, will Tai remain in JV this season and possibly win that coveted JV OIA championship that we all crave?
2. 120 Kamakaala. Very impressive. Closest competition was a mainland wrestler. Should be in running for top 5.
3. 132 Hunter Berger. In a highly anticipated match against Chang, Hunter went down with an apparent ankle injury and had to be carried off the mat. How bad is it? Season ending? We will see. Hope for a speedy recovery.
4. 144 Taam. Coen (Mil) seemed to close the gap between this rivalry. Although Taam got the win again, it wasn’t easy. They will meet again at least two more times. We will see how long Taam can hold off Coen.
5. Moanalua boys repeat as officials champions. Was it a lackluster performance by KSK or great performance by Motown? I hear Landford will be back later this year. He will definitely be a difference maker. Moanalua still has their power freshman, Kukonu, to insert into the lineup. The title race looks a lot more interesting now.
Lots more storylines. Got to see great wrestling matches this weekend. On to Moanalua duals. Please add on.

P4P post officials! Some wrestlers were nocked or brought up based off of dominance, injury, strength of bracket. Some flaws are definently within the list but add on and correct me!
1.K.Goes(CSTL,157 Sr)- No justification need in my opinion…
2.M.Labuanan(KSM, 150 Sr)- Looks like he finally mellowed out a bit and turned off his emotional side a bit. If he and tyger met up at 144 it could’ve been mikah getting his hand raised.
3.T.Taam(MOA, 144,Sr)-showed vulnerability but you still can’t deny that he is up there and will get his title. Think this tournament will be a wake up call as he goes back to the drawing board.
4.P.Kamakaala(KAH,120 Jr)- Dominated the hardest bracket, Gas tank is still iffy and his box scores aren’t as impressive as some others but in his matches he handles them well and when he’s on it he won’t be denied
5.A.Woode(NAN,113 Fr)- Woode has arrived, teching nearly everyone excluding thai whom was one point away (14-0) from getting teched. Will there be anyone who actually challenges the freshmen phenom?
6.Q.Corpuz(MOA,126 Sr) With a pretty empty weight class, Corpuz had a beautiful neuters game throughout the tournament, earning bonus’s and dominated
7.H.Berger(STL,132 Jr) terrible injury to put a stagnant hold on his year, could affect him even up to late season, prior was dominating but even against paliku it appeared it would be a close match
8.G.Beulow(PUN,175 Jr)- Finally had healed from a devastating injury to his campaign last year, he will likely claim his title this season
9.T.Passeti(MAU,157 Sr)-Gave a hard match to Goes, will be the state finals match, had a questionable Dq on backside after dominating Ito(PUN) for the entirety of the match prior
10.R.Burtin(CSTL,215 Jr) Dominated the field could be on the rise as the year goes on

Only my opinion:
Nice Start!
A little different from what I see, but similar..
1. Taam: Still undefeated after 3 Seasons and finds a way to win even in tough situations. He is still going for that GrandSlam.
2. Labuanan: Only one real lost back in his Fr. Year to a State Champ, don’t know how to look at his other lost at Officials 2022. I saw that he beat himself.
3. Berger: 2X State Champ and other then and injury he had at Officials haven’t lost in our eyes. Not going to dis-credit him when he hasn’t been beat.
4. Goes: No doubt he’ll get the job done this year. I have him at #4 reason we still have to count his Fr. Year and he took some L’s during that time.
5. Woode: Like the way he wrestles, the results are not questionable.
6. Kamakaala: Returning State Champ and very smart. Had a little scare in the beginning with Caden but got the job done. Still the top of his class
7. Beulow: Ready to go! Great match in the finals at Officials and a good opponent.
8. Hotema: moved very well and showed everyone that 106 is his bracket. Look very good with his neutral.
9. Chang: looked very good in the beginning with Berger, unfortunately it did end the way we all wanted it. Even though he didn’t go Varsity last year he only took losses from Langford and Berger.
10. Corpuz: Looked good at 126, still waiting on Langford. But no doubt he’s here to win it.
Again just my opinion.

I still see the favorites to win states is kamehameha, last year they lost officials too but won when it mattered most. Not to mention; no 113 entered in the tournament, Landford missing from lineup, Posiuali missing from lineup, Paaluhi missing from lineup, paclib injured, and miller wrestling sick this past weekend.

Very nice list. My list would be similar. Personally, I’d switch out Passeti with a champion. Probably Hotema. I like when people put explanations also. You can see why they feel that way. Whether or not others agree or disagree.wowzag wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2024 4:30 am P4P post officials! Some wrestlers were nocked or brought up based off of dominance, injury, strength of bracket. Will try to give a longer review later, but not sure how you guys can keep the 190 champ Maira(KON) off the list compared to some of these others.
He night have had one of the most dominant tournaments of anyone. He didn't give up a point and his closest match was 14-0. I know he didn't have the greatest competition, but that's still a crazy stat line.

Re: 2024-2025 Wrestling
Glad we got the P4P conversation started. I don't think anyone can argue with the top 3, although I would say based on total accolades, I would put Labuanan and Taam above Goeas (3x state champs vs 1x). I'd also argue that while Passetti is a great wrestler, he wouldn't beat either Goeas at 165 or even Buelow at 175, so not sure how he could qualify for a P4P list. I'd also say that Corpuz, while he won Officials, wasn't the most dominant in a pretty empty 126 field without Landford, nor does he have many prior placements to hang his hat on. I'd move those 2 off the list and definitely add Hotema and either Chang or Tauyan. While the Chang/Berger match didn't play out the way we wanted, the score was 0-0 when Berger got hurt, so it's tough to say who the better wrestler is at this point. Both are incredible, and could make a case to have both on the list later this season. Hotema has to be on the list based on pure dominance of 106. 2 pins, a tech, and an injury default (as he was on the way to at least a major). He was the highest team point scorer of the tournament, and actually fits the criteria for "Pound For Pound" as he's wrestled up to 113 and even 120 this season and remains undefeated (including a dominant pin over 120 pound placer Khairyn Vilavong a few weeks ago). Finally, although it was a 7-7 match before catching Torres in the finals with that standing cradle, Tauyan looks like the real deal with that pin. He also dominated his way throughout the rest of the competition. Looking forward to seeing this list evolve over the course of the next 2 months!wowzag wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2024 4:30 am P4P post officials! Ah yes, Maira dominated the tournament as well. 190 was a weaker weight class, but you can't fault him for that one. He definitely has a case to me made for the P4P list as well.talloola25 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2024 10:46 am Will try to give a longer review later, but not sure how you guys can keep the 190 champ Maira(KON) off the list compared to some of these others.

Re: 2024-2025 Wrestling
I have a less popular opinion about the top 10. I’ve mentioned it last year but if I could at least be heard out. I mentioned last year that the top 10 should start off as a clean slate and past accolades shouldn’t be the criteria for which the rankings are based. Of course you’d use past accomplishments for a preseason top 10 where no one has wrestled yet. If we’re going to be using past resumes, the list should only be 5 people. Because no one else would have a theoretical chance at winning the top 10 title. Hotema, Maira, Woode to name a few, won’t have the accolades to win it. You can’t possibly win it as a freshman, unless all previous state champions were seniors. Squirrel had a great response for Hotema. After listening to how well he’s performed so far, he probably should be considered at the top spot or very close to it.FlyingSquirrel808 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 25, 2024 2:07 pm
Looking forward to seeing this list evolve over the course of the next 2 months!
He won’t be because of the mystique of the returning champions. 2 years ago at the official’s tournament, Kimura beat Labuanon and Shields pinned Pagurayan. When the rankings came out, both Labuanon and Pagarayan were ahead of the guys that beat them. I thought that’s such a travesty. Even though I felt both would and did exact their revenge, they met on the mat and were beaten. It shouldve been reflected in the rankings fairly. I feel everyone should have to prove themselves every year. Especially, if they moved up a weight class. I also feel that a wrestler can make huge strides in the offseason. A good example would be Corpuz, I don’t know his experience level but he may have started wrestling as a freshman. It’s huge for him to win the officials tournament. Even though it’s quite empty. La Grande was at this tournament. If those coaches watched all the matches and championships, I’m curious what their top 10 would be.
Skillset. Interestingly, I attended a mainland tournament and when they announced the MVP’s of the tournament, it was divided into thirds. Lower, middle, and heavyweights. They said the skillset is so lopsided when comparing lower to heavyweights, the lower weights will win every time. Mainland point of view, tournament had over 60 teams.
Dominance. I think the overall point getter does show dominance. In this case Hotema. If we’re talking P4P, I feel you should be undefeated. And only undefeated wrestlers should be on the list. Not sure I can buy the argument that a certain wrestler is better then the others at their weight class but yet gets beaten by someone in their own weight class.

P4P debate ... sure Iʻll give my two cents. I will start by looking at Officialʻs Champs, then look at records(including outside of weightclass..P4P), Dominance, then look at strength of weight class, then past accolades.... Others that should have consideration.
Champs first - Hotema, Woode, Kamakaala, Corpuz, Chang, Tauyan, Taam, Labuanan, Takitani, Goeas, Buelow, Maira, Burton, Peau
Undefeated - Woode, Kamakaala, Taam, Labuanan, Takitani, Goeas, Buelow, Maira, Burton, Chang
Dominance - Maira, Woode, Labuanan, Chang, Taam, Corpuz, Peau, Goeas, Burton, Buelow, Takitani
Strength of weight/opponents(ranking from highest to lowest) - Kamakaala, Taam, Woode, Peau, Goeas, Burton, Tauyan, Hotema, Maira, Labuanan, Takitani, Corpuz, Chang*(might be the highest in strength of opponent, but Berger is hurt rn)
Accolades(ranking from highest to lowest) - Woode*(only AA on the list), Labuanan, Taam, Goeas, Kamakaala, Maira, Hotema, Buelow, Peau, Takitani
Others - Berger: Defending state champ and undefeated except inj def to Chang, defending state champ, wins over multiple past placers, and dominant in wins. Passetti: lost a close one to Goeas and dominated the rest(lost due to illegal slam against inferior opponent),
My list using that information: 1. Taam 2. Labuanan 3. Berger 4. Kamakaala 5. Woode 6. Goeas 7. Maira 8. Chang 9. Buelow 10. Burton
I do value past accomplishments and think theyʻre necessary in differentiating them over time since we have such a limited sample size of matches in Hawaii. I donʻt hold. being a 1st year Varsity competitor against them either. Iʻm sure I missed some things here(please point them out), but itʻs a good place for now.
Taam ended up getting the top spot due to Strength of opponents, dominance(just beat Shigemoto 17-2), and past accomplishments just being overall better than the rest. I donʻt think anyone can catch him because of those metrics though unless he loses.

Re: 2024-2025 Wrestling
Well Kamehameha came out victorious again this past week at moanalua duals, had pretty tough duals against kalani and moanalua. The program always seems to have kids willing to bang it out though and come in clutch. Wish we could see a girls dual tourney though.

Usually Moanalua does hold it at the same time, but Pa'ani was held at the same time this year. Some great matches there as well. Highlighted by a semi between two Official's champions at 110.bigbreaker808 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:10 am Well Kamehameha came out victorious again this past week at moanalua duals, had pretty tough duals against kalani and moanalua.
