At least Kahuku didn’t wear white helmets. White helmets on any team are so bland and boring.
Having said that, Kahuku faces enormous odds to four-peat. They’ve already lost three games—only two teams with three losses or more (1993 St Louis and 2007 Leilehua) have ever won state championships at the highest level.
Felipe was saying Kahuku also has a new black uniform? Hope not. They would look like Texas Tech. Concerning the repeat, yeah no. Contenders would be St.Louis, Kahuku,Campbell and Mililani and not in that order.
It wouldn’t be the first time Kahuku wore black.

Another great game on tap with Mililani vs Campbell. The Sabers obviously have the offensive firepower in this one, but many people don't give the Trojan defense enough credit. I keep saying that Campbells defense is still a bit shaky. Mililani will be able to run the ball and that will play into not having McMillian. Togafau-Tavui will be a mis-match for any Saber DB and Mililani will have to keep the Sabers defense honest by throwing some balls up to him. In 2015, Tata created a great game plan in the state title game to essentially shutdown Tua. He found a way to create pressure and in turn, Tua was rattled and threw 3 interceptions that night. Tata will need to come up with another scheme to get Sagapolutele off his spot. Force Campbell to run the football.
I predicted that Kahuku would grind out a close one against Mililani last week and I was wrong...didn't know the Red Raiders were starting #15 at QB. For this game, I think Mililani will find a way to limit the Saber passing attack to some extent. If Campbell abandons the run game, it will force Sagapolutele into some uncharted areas he hasn't faced this season. Mililani will be primed with a solid out of conference schedule that will help them with this one. I think the Trojans pull this one out 24-14.

@University Ave:
Well, I don't know. Let's face it: The Trojans were lucky to beat the Red Raiders; it was a 4-point game, and it pretty much went down to the wire. But the Red Raiders ran the ball much of the game. Stopping that, is totally different than stopping a high-octane pass game. I do think the Trojans' D is better than the Sabers' D, but the Sabers' pass-game compensates for that. I like the Sabers by 7.

@gopunahou: As you know, I don't particularly care for your alma mater, unfortunately. However, Punahou School's athletic dept should be given credit for never forgetting what the school's colors are: BLUE and BUFF. I have
never seen
any Pun team--in
any sport--wearing black. Punahou School's athletic dept understands that black is
not a neutral color, and that it is
not one of the school's colors. This isn't rocket science, knowing your school's colors. Yet, many high schools' athletic departments are failing in that regard.

Week In Review
Trending Up:
1. Pac-Five. Just a few years ago I was worried Pac-Five might fold after breaking up with Mid-Pac and losing the practice field. Not only have they survived they are much better than they have been in years. If P5 "Bigs" stay healthy they are clear favorites to win D2. P5 looks like a D1/Open team.
2. Kapolei. Well-coached team. They scheme to their strengths, their players, and it works. They destroyed Waipahu, no surprise, but the hype is real.
3. Mililani. Beating Kahuku deserves mention even though offense for both Mililani and Kahuku was disappointing.
4. OIA Open. These great matchups just keep coming!
Trending down:
1. Kahuku black helmets. Love them or hate them, they lost their first game in the black helmets.
2. ILH Open. STL is a contender, and I credit STL for what they have done this year. But its going to be harder and harder for STL. Every potential athlete looking to go to STL (for football reasons only) must be asking "Why pay $20K a year" to go there". There is a reason for some, not others, but it's an issue now. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out. The other ILH Open teams aren't contenders and probably get more attention than they deserve because they are big private schools and have a ton of advantages.
This week's matchups:
1. Campbell v. Mililani. *** GAME OF THE WEEK*** Mililani had a key Lineman ejected during the Kahuku game. He will be unavailable for the Campbell game. THIS HURTS Mililani in a matchup where I would already place them as underdogs. This is a huge game. I like the Campbell offense and believe Campbell will win although it won't be easy.
2. Damien v. Pac-Five. This is a fun matchup. I could go either way picking this game because of the P5 bigs. Should be fun to watch this one.
3. Kapolei v. Farrington. Another great OIA Open matchup. Fun to watch Kapolei work on offense, and I expect they win, but the Gove have weapons too.
4. Aiea v. Radford. Radford is back and a legitimate contender in OIA D1 although they lost to Moanalua in the first game. Aiea just a game to Waianae that was actually close well into the 4th qtr. I like Radford in this game but its fun to have a competitive Aiea v. Radford game in action!
5. STL v. KSK. The first game between these two was closer than you might think given the box score. In that game KSK had a couple of really close calls that took away 2 touchdowns early. Then after the KSK coach went for a fake punt on like a 4th and 25 deep in KSK territory which STL stopped and almost immediately scored. After that it was downhill for KSK. But KSK is learning how to win and much improved with this new staff especially on offense. KSK has "Bigs" in the front to compete [I didn't say win] with STL and they showed it during the first game. This is why KSK is trending up (and why Punahou is trending down). A win over STL would be huge for KSK.
6. Kaimuki v, Mckinley. Both teams are winless. I am hoping the Tigers can win this game (out of concern for the program). Enrollment wise Kaimuki is just SO SMALL now - I think the state should consider folding Kaimuki students into Mckinley.

Unless McMillan comes back, I don't see Mililani putting up 24 points. Also to put in perspective Kahuku third string, nevered played Qb, getting 21 passes off says alot. I mean we talking about playing Mililani playing the #1 offensive player in the State. I can't see any love to Tavui as he bolted as a senior to Mililani. I mean Campbell carried him all last season Injured. What would takeaway some Ewa beach pride? Catch balls from Jaron or Kini? But now Kini is Injured. But enough with the transfer rant, I got Campbell 31-14. Again it's about who comes back from injuries.

Every year is different, and THIS YEAR Campbell has the best QB in the state, The Campbell QB has gotten better! Much better than last year. McMillan from Mililani was great last year but I personally don't think he was ever this good. I'd bet on Campbell. Their defense should be adequate and without McMillan Mililani won't be able to score enough points. With him, like you said, they got chance, but I don't think it's a close call without McMillan playing. Can't wait.

@RealTalk:
Man! That was such a
great post! You've said so much, I can't even attempt to respond to all of it, there's so much to say. For now I'd like to respond to 5 and 6:
5. I don't know about the Warriors. I
like Kamehameha Schools, but it seems so hard every year for them to overcome the Saints. Yes, the Warriors have a thick O-line, and they seem to have that every year. But the Saints have a pretty thick
D-line this year. I'd love to see them beat the Saints, even if only by one point.
6. Yes, Kaimuki High's enrollment is small, and it's been that way for, what, some six years now, perhaps more. However, I don't see Kaimuki High being "folded" into McKinley High. Kaimuki alumni simply will
not have it. Kalani High had the same problem of low enrollment back in the late-'90s. I'd heard that then-Governor Ben Cayetano was considering closing the school. (He's a Farrington alumnus; what would
he care?) My understanding is that Kalani alumni met with him at his office and told him they would
not stand for the school being closed. Cayetano apparently backed-down, and Kalani High lives on to this day. If current Governor Green tried to close Kaimuki High, I'm sure Kaimuki alumni would meet with him in his office, and inform him that they won't have it.
About some twenty years ago or so, the state closed Liliuokalani Elementary. Its classrooms are now used as state offices. Even though it was only an elementary school, alumni did oppose the closing. Closing an elementary school is
one thing, but closing a
high school is another. I mean, your high is where you launched into adulthood; high school students are like young adults. High schools have so much more meaning to guys than elementary schools. I'm about 90% certain that Kaimuki High will
not be shut down; its alumni would raise hell. As Governor Cayetano saw all those years ago, I think Governor Green would see that closing a
high school simply isn't worth all the trouble, drama and resistance such a move would entail.

A school like Aiea could fold and divide their student body to Radford and Peal City. Right now kids from Halawa housing walk further to get to Aiea then if the went to Radford. In fact it's a more dangerous path to Aiea, crossing Kam Hy,Moanalua Road and H1 bridge. Lol, sometimes I believe Radford military dependents didn't want housing roughness at their school.

Mililani best defensive lineman EJ Tapeni suspended for the Campbell game? Is there an appeal process after his ejection during the Kahuku game?

I've seen York win appeals after presenting his case to the board. Thing is this is the 3rd ejection from the defense in the last 2 games against Kahuku. Yeah, I get it they fired up, but next level is discipline.

1. @Markeke: I hear you re: Aiea: having students walking up that way doesn't sound like my first choice. Nothing against Aiea -I loved Taumua as a player when he was there a couple years ago, and they had that great team before Waipahu stole it, lol. If you love football like we do, it's interesting sometimes to know the differences in enrollments and how it can play out on the field.
2. @HS Football Fanatic: love that history you're sharing, and I see now this closure of our small high schools (Kaimuki is the size of a big elementary now) will probably NEVER happen for political reasons. Great knowledge, but I'm still just sayin''... Maybe we could add some housing. I dunno.
3. *On a related note, anybody know what the plan for Halawa Housing occupants is if the new stadium project goes thru (which I personally hope it doesn't)?* That could change Aiea HS drastically. I just don't know the plan there.

@Markeke: Great post.
1. As was the case with Kalani High and Governor Cayetano, if Governor Green were to attempt to close Aiea High, I'm certain Aiea alumni would be in his office to say they would not stand for it. Who knows? Perhaps even ChadFukuoka--an Aiea alumnus active on these high school threads--would be one of the alumni in Green's office. Generally, a high school would be targeted for closing-down, only if its enrollment became too small. Is Aiea High's enrollment really low? Otherwise, I don't think Green would try to shut it down; why should he?
2. Yeah, sometimes the school boundaries are nuts. My friend has a daughter who attends Kalani High, because they live in that school's assigned area. Yet, she's closer geographically to Kaimuki High. In fact, she could
walk to Kaimuki High; they live only some eight blocks from that school. It would take only about fifteen minutes
max for her to walk there. Yet, they live in Kalani High's assigned area, even though that school is much farther away from where they live. There's no way she could walk to Kalani High.
3. Well, Radford High's military students don't have a say as to whether kids from Halawa Housing can attend their school; it's up to the Hawaii DOE. The Hawaii DOE draws the geographic boundaries of public schools. What
might have happened is that the military might have leaned on the Hawaii DOE to send the Halawa Housing kids to Aiea High; politics are sometimes involved. For example, MWH is closer to Farrington High than it is to McKinley High. Yet, MWH kids attend McKinley High. Why? Because it was decided that since Farrington High has two housing projects assigned to it (KPT and Kam IV), McKinley High should
also have two housing projects assigned to
it: MWH and Lanakila Homes, even though MWH and Lanakila Homes are geographically closer to Farrington High.
