Re: 2024 Football Season
I was kind of pulling for the Red Raiders. I don't particularly care for Mililani High; they and Moanalua High have each become a "Punahou School of the OIA", ripping-off a lot of league and state titles. Didn't care for the black helmets; the only neutral color is white, and white happens to be one of Kahuku High's school colors (red and white). There seems to be this mentality that black makes you look more "mean"; more intimidating. Let your play do the talking. St Louis School is the best team in ILH Open, and has been one of the best teams in the state for over three decades. I don't see them wearing black helmets. They use blue helmets; blue is one of their school colors (blue and red).
UH, my alma mater, is guilty of this same fixation with black. The football and beach volleyball programs need to be reminded that UH's colors are green and white, not black and green. This bad habit was started by football HC June Jones, in the early-2000s.

Re: 2024 Football Season
I think one reason the Kahuku-St Louis rivalry has been or still is so intense is because for both schools, football is the sport they are best known for, or are always good at. With other top football schools like Mililani, Punahou, Campbell, they are good at other sports like boys and girls soccer, softball, baseball, boys and girls volleyball, etc. Seems like until more recent times, both St Louis and Kahuku have pretty much dominated football as their main sport.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:15 pm I was kind of pulling for the Red Raiders. @ChadFukuoka: Well, lately the Saints have been good at other sports, too. Basketball comes to mind; they're two-time defending State D1 champs. I don't care for St Louis School, so I'm not exactly thrilled about that. They've also been pretty good in baseball, lately. The Red Raiders, meanwhile, were OIA D1 girls' basketball champs last season. But then St Louis alumni can say, "Oh, but we don't have girls". Therefore, I am more willing to support the Red Raiders. I'm not really willing to support the Saints at all.

Re: 2024 Football Season
I think there was some kind of push to make black an official color of UH when June Jones got the new black helmets for the football team? I'm not really sure, it was a little before I started following football.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:15 pm I was kind of pulling for the Red Raiders. At least Kahuku didn’t wear white helmets. White helmets on any team are so bland and boring.
Having said that, Kahuku faces enormous odds to four-peat. They’ve already lost three games—only two teams with three losses or more (1993 St Louis and 2007 Leilehua) have ever won state championships at the highest level.

Punahou Football: 12-1, 2008 ILH and State Champions! 11-0, 2013 ILH and State Champions, a team for the ages!

Well, I don't know about any push to make black an official color; I'd be surprised if there were one. Very few colleges change their school colors; there's a sense of tradition. Nonetheless, it was Jones who started adding black to the unis and helmets. When I was there in the late-'70s, the helmets were white, which is one of UH's colors (green and white).

Funny you should say that white helmets are bland and boring; a couple of years ago, Kapolei HC Hernandez said white helmets were nice. He said it on OC16 while he was commentating a football game; can't remember which school was playing that had the white helmets, but he said he liked their white helmets. What's ironic is that his own team--the Hurricanes--have black helmets. And, black is one of Kapolei High's school colors (black and teal).
Regarding the Red Raiders, I think that once they get their starting QB back, they'll be in the hunt. They lost to the Trojans by just 4 points; their O-line didn't take care of business. If the O-line had taken care of business, the Red Raiders would have won, by 3. That's what it boils down to. That game must have been really sucky for Kahuku alumni.
Re: 2024 Football Season
Mililani didn't have much of a problem keeping Kahuku s "elephant" package in check.

Re: 2024 Football Season
@Markeke: I'm still surprised, though, that the Trojans' defensive front-seven were able to stuff the Red Raiders' O-line (especially the elephant package). Even so, the game was close; only four points' difference. Bet the Red Raiders can't wait to get their hands on the Trojans again. Aren't they likely to meet again this season?

It's all good. In fact Rod York deployed more of a "wildcat" run then traditional qb set. Had a feeling it would be low scoring and with McMillan out, why risk your Qb or turn overs by the young Qb. Kahuku defense thrives on turn overs. Yeah so with both teams still having Campbell and Kapolei left, season still young. Saturday Campbell vs. Mililani will be another big game.

@Markeke: Definitely, Sabers v Trojans will be a barnburner. Whom are you picking? I'm going with the Sabers. So, the Trojans stopped the Red Raiders' elephant package and run-game. Try stopping the Sabers' wild pass-game; that's a horse of a different color. Not only do I think the Sabers will win; I want them to win. At the moment, I don't care very much for Mililani High. Something tells me Kahuku alumni don't, either.
Re: 2024 Football Season
Felipe was saying Kahuku also has a new black uniform? Hope not. They would look like Texas Tech. Concerning the repeat, yeah no. Contenders would be St.Louis, Kahuku,Campbell and Mililani and not in that order.gopunahou wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 11:38 pm At least Kahuku didn’t wear white helmets. Re: 2024 Football Season
I think you have to factor in that Kahuku lost two games to nationally ranked mainland teams. I'm not sure about who the 93 St Louis team played, but I'm pretty sure the 07 Leilehua team lost those three games to OIA opponents.gopunahou wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 11:38 pm At least Kahuku didn’t wear white helmets. So Kahuku's only loss to a Hawaii based team was this most recent one to Mililani.
I'm interested to see if Kahuku will fare better, assuming they finish in the top 3 in the Open, and make states, assuming all of their players are healthy by the time mid November rolls around.
