It'll all be sorted out by the end of the ILH season, hopefully Saint Louis got a wake-up call from their pre-season that their Offense needs some tweaking in both the scheme, and the QB play. O-line probably the biggest in the state, however, they need to start playing like it, receivers without Lacaden and Nunuha is lackluster, Lasconia looks like the only solid one out of the bunch. I believe the Saints may just need to run a two-quarterback system, until one of them gets it together enough to become a full-time trustworthy guy. Kekawa looks really solid, may be the first time in a long time we see Saint Louis as a run-game oriented team rather than the run-n-shoot we know and love lol.
@GentlemanOfTheLou: The Saints might not have the biggest O-line in the state. I just found-out that Kailua High's O-line averages 283 lbs per player. That's what you call thick.

True, I take that back, I saw those big boys during their scrimmage with STL

@GentlemanOfTheLou: Like Farrington High, Kailua High usually has thick O-linemen, but usually not as thick as the Govs. I don't think the Surfriders were that thick on the O-line last year; what a difference a year makes. The Surfriders also had a thick O-line in '87. The Surfriders were the OIA favorites that year, and of course back then, the Saints were the ILH favorites. Guys had been anticipating a Prep Bowl showdown between the two schools. Rumor had it that the Saint D-linemen did not want to go up against the Surfrider O-line, and you know how tough the Saint D-lines were back then. I wouldn't call it fear, but perhaps palpable apprehension? That rumor lit-up the coconut wireless. As it turned-out, the Surfriders were upset by Waianae High in the OIA title game by a Hail Mary pass very late in the game. (That's right; a Hail Mary pass by the run-oriented Seariders.) So, the Surfriders and Saints never played each other. Anyway, that year ('87) there was a consensus that the Surfriders had the most intimidating O-line in the state; therefore, it figures that that O-line was featured in a story in the sports page, accompanied by a photo of the O-linemen. When was the last time a school's O-line was featured in the newspaper? And yes, the linemen were thick. I remember; I read the article and saw the photo.

Your post made me want to look up the OIA football championship history. I found out Kailua is 0-7 in OIA championship games. Including the loss you mentioned to Waianae in 87. That's heartbreaking for lifelong Kailua fans.

While the loss you mentioned to Waianae probably broke the hearts of Kailua fans who saw the game in person, I'd say the most heartbreaking loss I've ever seen in a Hawaii high school football game was when Kahuku defeated Baldwin in the 2006 state semifinal on that trick pass as time expired. That's also the closest a neighbor island team had gotten to playing for the state championship at the highest level. Of course that can't happen now in the Open Division, since only the Oahu based OIA and ILH take part in the state playoffs.

@ChadFukuoka:

I give you credit for looking things up like that. I don't even know how to do that, and even if I did, I probably wouldn't bother. Anyway, I didn't know that the Surfriders are 0-7 in title games; that sucks. Kailua alumni must be ticked about that. They almost last this past Saturday's game, too; went right down to the wire. But, they lost the JV game.

I didn't know about the Kahuku v Baldwin game; I don't even remember it.

On the OIA website, under the football tab, in the right hand side there is a list of all championship games for the Open, D1, D2, and OIA (the championship game when there was no classification). I just manually counted every time Kailua was listed in a championship game. They lost all 7 of them.

Their only recent title was when they split with Kahuku in 2001. The OIA title game was canceled due to the 9/11 attacks that year. Kailua has also won 3 titles in the 60's before there was an OIA title game or playoffs.

@ChadFukuoka: Interesting. Now that I know how, I probably still wouldn't bother, as I suspected.

Remember that year in 2006. Baldwin had the best team ever. The Maiava brothers were beast. Kaluka Maiava went to USC and was a starting linebacker as a sophomore. He was a terror. Went to the NFL for the Browns and Raiders. The other brother Kai Maiava went to Colorado and UCLA starting at center. He was a Remington candidate (center) in his senior year. Was also Hawaii heavyweight boxing champ and college champ. Grandpa was Neff Maiava wrestler under Ed Francis.
Yes Baldwin was up and Kahuku did a half back toss to the end zone when the db's got sucked in the last play of the game. The championship game the following week had Kahuku beating St.Louis 7-6. The lowest points for St.Louis in the Prep bowl/Open series.

@Markeke: Actually, St Louis got shut-out by Waianae in the '73 Prep Bowl, 6-0.

@Markeke: Yeah, the Saints were shut-out in that game, but that was almost a full ten years before the Saints adopted the run-and-shoot. So, that '73 Saint team was something totally different than the Saint teams of the Cal Lee era.

Games to watch this weekend:

1. Moanalua v. Waianae. Battle of two large enrollment schools that - by the enrollment numbers - probably should be in the Open. I thought Moanalua was about to catch fire a couple years ago. Maybe they did - - - but not in the good way I expected. But it's clear Moanalua, as a school, has a lot of potential. This is not the same old Waianae offense either. Interested to see how this one turns out and where both schools are headed in the future.

2. KS v. Punahou. KS is trending up. The staff turnover from a couple years ago was a good thing - you can see it on offense (but they did have a terrible coaching decision to try a fake punt I talk about later). A couple very close calls from the refs in the KS v STL game took at least a couple KS TDs off the board against STL- one on a holding call and the other on a fail to complete catch type of call in the endzone. I thought KS should have been up a min. 14-0 against STL. But here's where it all went bad for KS: the KS coach called for a fake punt on a 4th and 25 (or something like that) deep in KS territory. Seriously? STL stuffed it for no gain and then took the ball in the redzone, scoring for the second time and going up 14-0. KS started to fall apart after that - no surprise. Good teams win close games, so you have to give it to STL. But KS is working with something and showed it - Coach, you CANNOT call a fake punt in that situation, lol.

3. Campbell v. Farrington. GAME OF THE WEEK!!!* OIA Open is delivering us some games this year. Been waiting on this one. Against STL the Govs RB was hurt, and this impacted their whole team's play. Also, against STL one of the Govs best defensive players got thrown out of the game. But the Govs showed potential against a contender like STL - the Govs are big and athletic at all 3 levels, unlike many teams. Not many teams can generally say that except Kahuku. Usually, even at schools like STL/KS/Kailua/Farrington (which have big guys up on the front), they have a lot of TINY/Undersized guys filling in most everywhere else, and this is one reason why those teams have been chasing Kahuku and may struggle against some of the mainland teams. Farrington has a chance if they can dominate the time of possession - but that will be hard. CAMPBELL- if you want to see a QB sling it, GO TO THIS GAME! The Campbell QB is amazing, go watch him now before he is playing on Saturdays. Doesn't really matter what you try to scheme up against the Campbell QB from what I've seen, this kid is the truth. The Govs best chance is to keep the Campbell QB off the field best they can... Cannot wait for these OIA Open matchups that are coming.

*Much respect to Kahuku's program and all they have done. But this matchup against Mater Dei is a tough one. One reason to watch (especially if I'm an OIA Open Coach) might be to see if Kahuku can do anything on offense, and what they do.

I've also heard that Carvalho returns this week for Kahuku, so watching the game might be valuable, in order to see how much of a game-changer he will be this season. As much as I love Saint Louis, the score may have been a little different, and the offense probably would have run smoother, if Carvalho was in. We'll see what he does...
