2024 Football Season

Post by University Ave »

Not sure when it all gets decided, but my early thoughts about the division shuffle of OIA teams for next season.

Open to D1:
Moanalua- The have struggled in the Open. They even struggled against D1 competition last season. Losing their QB will also be a challenge that won't be forgiving in the Open another year.
Waianae- Similar to Moanalua, they have struggled with D1 competition. The last time they had a winning record was 2017. A move down to D1 would help the Seariders.

D1 to Open:
Waipahu- Back to back OIA titles. This past season, they competed well with the Open teams with the exception of finishing games. They have proven to be able to recruit like Open schools with an already large enrollment.
Farrington- A no win season in the Open forced them to move down but they competed well the past 2 seasons in D1. They have the size and numbers to compete in the Open, which is where they truly belong. Lafaele will also recruit/retain talent in Kalihi.

D1 to D2:
Radford- The Rams have gone 2-11 since bumping back up to D1 - very similar reason to their last move down to D2 when they went from 0-8 to 6-3.
Castle- The past 2 seasons have resulted in a 1-10 record in OIA D1. The Knights haven't had a winning season in a long time and a move down to D2 is long overdue and would probably help resurrect the program.

D2 to D1:
Pearl City- Although they haven't brought home a OIA D2 title in the past 2 years, they have been competitive and near the top of the standings.
Roosevelt- Obviously the move to D2 was beneficial, but Roosevelt should be competing as a D1 program. At this point, there are other teams that should be playing at the lower level.

I say make the OIA Open a seven team league. Drop Moanalua to D1, leave Waianae in the Open and bring Farrington and Waipahu up.

For D1, another 7 team league.
For D2, keep it at 8.
Total of 22 teams.

If McMillen leaves, he has to go to a Maxprep Top 10 mainland school. Who knows maybe Bishop Gorman? There is a connection to past Mil players. As for Kaawa at Moanalua, he would fill in for McMillen.

It looks like
Waipahu and Mililani had utilize the transfer portal in 2023 and took the best players from Aiea and Kapolei and Campbell. This enabled the central OIA teams to build 1 year wonders to get To States final championship games.

Heard many rumors lately, but definitely not about that, I get Ka’awa wanting to go to a more competitive team, but why is McMillan leaving? I heard rumors that a lot of players, like Tana Tavui, are thinking about transferring out of Campbell and to other OIA schools, but where would that leave Sagapolutele? I’d say his choices are either to go to Kahuku and give them another championship or return to Saint Louis. Also heard rumors about the OIA—>ILH redshirt transfer rule possibly being overturned, leading to some key players transferring to ILH schools if they get the chance. Who knows though…all rumors

Kale Ane has been a disappointment after 3 years at McKinley. His only improvement is the number of players on the team but their performance has remained the same, losing and by large margins. I thought after 3 years Ane would have a more competitive team. Has the time for Ane passed like it passed for the Lee brothers?

@BowTow:

1. In fairness to Ane, McKinley High simply doesn't have the talent, size and numbers that Punahou School has. Not with St Louis School picking Ane's pockets by recruiting his best players from MWH. St Louis School has been recruiting players from MWH for some 35 years now. With Cal Lee and Ron Lee gone, will that continue? Don't know, but Ane is no longer at McKinley High anyway.
2. My sense is that, yes, Ane's time has passed, but who knows? I don't know what his plans are. Besides, he's not quite as old as the Lee brothers are. Ron is St Louis '61 (not sure about the year). Cal is Kalani '64, while Ane is Punahou '71 (not sure about the year). I wouldn't be completely surprised if an OIA D1 or D2 school tried to pick Ane up if it needed a football coach. Perhaps Damien or Pac-Five in the ILH might try to pick him up if either of them needed a football coach. Question is: Would Ane accept a coaching position at this point? Is he still game, or has he elected to ride-off into the sunset as far as coaching is concerned?

Ane didn’t coach McKinley this past season.
Punahou Football: 12-1, 2008 ILH and State Champions! 11-0, 2013 ILH and State Champions, a team for the ages!

With McKinley being recruited by St Louis and losing all their best prospects, does that not apply to other town schools? Kaimuki, Roosevelt, and Kaiser all placed in the top half of the OIA D2 in football. Kaiser is more East Honolulu and isn't really "town", but Roosevelt and Kaimuki are. None of those schools are struggling as much as McKinley. And those schools have also had good years in other sports, a couple of years ago Kaimuki made the D2 state final in boys basketball, Kaiser (along with Kalani) have had decent teams in soccer. Is it just McKinley being recruited, and not the other Honolulu based schools?

@ChadFukuoka:

1. Kaimuki, Roosevelt and Kaiser don't have MWH in their geographic area. For some 40 years, MWH has been a gold mine of football talent.
2. Though Kaiser is in East Honolulu, it's still considered a town school.
3. Actually, McKinley hasn't been that bad in boys' basketball over the past five years or so, and this year their girls' basketball team is pretty decent, if not competitive.
4. Again, I don't think MWH is considered a gold mine for basketball players or soccer players; just football players. So, McKinley High is being recruited only for football, and primarily by St Louis School. St Louis School has been mining MWH for football players for some 40 years; primarily during the Cal Lee era.
5. Again, I'd be surprised if any school is recruiting soccer players. Soccer simply isn't that big here in Hawaii, especially when compared to football. Besides, which public school is known for soccer players? The strongest I can think of is Mililani High, but I don't think soccer is big enough here on Oahu for any private school to actively recruit.

I believe age, as we should expect have hit the Lee brothers and Ane a bit. Their downfalls have been more a product of their inability to recruit at Kalani and McKinley. Not to say that they didn't bring in talent when they choose to coach different schools, but they no longer had a ton of elite level players and depth. They are still great coaches, but their talent was finding ways to recruit in talent. The Lee's struggled down the stretch more because talent was not only leaving, but no longer flowing in - they didn't suddenly forget how to coach. Ane just couldn't lure kids to come to McKinley.

We are just entering the day and age of the portal mentality. The coaches succeeding are the ones that have the abilty to bring the talent together. It's also the reason why Saban is leaving. I feel he's realized that Alabama can no longer hoard talent and stash them for later. The 5 star backup is now bouncing and that hurts them in the future. This is exactly what's bleeding down to the high school level and Hawaii is no different than the rest of the country.

Moanalua hasn't been a good team in a while. 30 something years losing season. 1978 Graduate, KHON2 news Ross Shimabuku was the last season they had an all state or all OIA player QB from Moanalua High school in Salt Lake Blvd. Near the airport or parallel to the airport road.

I know Honolulu like the back of my hand because I lived there for 26 years or so. Before coming back here. Ross Shimabuku was the news anchor guy for KHON2 news morning show. 5-7 QB, all OIA, 1978. They won the OIA title that year.

@four25wow: Actually, Moanalua was pretty good in 2021 and 2022. Not outstanding, but pretty good. Nothing to sneeze at. Their passing game, in particular, was pretty good.

Didn't know where to put this, so I guess I'll just use this thread.

Today was a kick-butt day for Kamehameha alumni. The Warriors had games/matches in four different sports today, and they won all four:

1. State D1 boys' volleyball tournament: Beat Campbell High, 3-0.
2. State girls' water polo tournament: Beat Mililani High, 14-4.
3. ILH D1 baseball: Beat St Louis School, 4-0. This won them the ILH title.
4. ILH D1 softball: Beat Maryknoll School, 17-7. This won them the ILH title.

In the past, this was something that only a school like Punahou School could pull-off. My fear is that this might cause guys to dislike Kamehameha Schools as much as many guys dislike Punahou School. I like Kamehameha Schools, so I fear that.

Kamehameha just beat Punahou 9-8 in the girls water polo championship.

Kamehemeha also beat Punahou to win the boys volleyball title. That ends Punahou's 10 year streak of being state champions.

As a fan of Kamehemeha, I'm sure you're absolutely thrilled with these results. Also, since you're a UH fan as well, Kamehemeha's star player, the son of UH coach Charlie Wade, will be committed to playing for them starting next year. He was on fire tonight, close to 40 kills I believe in the match.
