What Are The Warriors Chances Against SDST?

Post by sarvicdar »

The Warriors play SDST a week from today. The question will be if Hawaii's team is a pretender or contender in the nationally televised game, in the start of MWC play and against a SDST team that the Warriors have beaten only twice in its last 10 games.

From a historical standpoint the Warriors have 1 win in its last 8 games following a bye week.

The ideal scenario is that the Warriors have ironed out its woes both offensively and defensively, healed physically and mentally and regrouped and looked at themselves as both players and coaches during the bye week.

The ultimate scenario is a win. Back in 2018 the Warriors played SDST on the road and was listed as an 18 point underdog and won 31-30. Can this year's Warrior team follow in the footsteps of the 2018 team?

This year's SDST team is not as potent as SDST teams in the past. The same can be said about the Warriors. So it might come down to which team has its mojo working and is better coached.

What are the Warriors expectation in this game? What do you see? 😃

Can Caleb Phillips at TE be the answer to making the offense click, similarly how Chang coached TE Turner at Nevada? In the first four games of the season Phillips was targeted 4 times. Against NMST Turner was targeted 11 times for 8 catchees and of 71 plays on offense he lined up at slot 15 times. If I had to guess it would seem that Chang has a hand on coaching the TE. It will be interesting to see if the Warriors can improve on 3rd downs going 4/16 against NMST.

More so than past seasons, SDSU's offense is even more one-dimensional this season....averaging less than 100 yards passing per game (over the first 5 games)....so have apparently just fired their OC (just like Boise State did a week earlier) after an anemic offensive game against Boise State (totalling just 6 first downs & 114 yards in net total offense). Prior to the Boise State loss, SDSU averaged over 200 yards rushing per game. The UH defense will probably need to load the box to slow down SDSU's rushing attack to make the game competitive.

New Mexico State lost to FIU.
Western Kentucky lost to Troy.
Duquesne lost.

I’d say we’re gonna lose SDSU! However we might score close to 30 points but our defense will give up the big plays. 59-30.

On the bright side:

1% chance Hawaii wins the game on the road at SDSU, I give it 1% because Timmy is installing the RnS. Because if not, it would be .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%

.000000001% chance Hawaii wins by a blow-out 30 points or more

On the not so bright side:

99% chance we lose the game on the road at SDSU
40% chance we lose by 30 points or more

Comes down to the run defense for UH. If the front 6/7 can get some pressure and slow down the run game of SDST, we might have a chance. Have not been impressed by SDST this season or most of the MWC overall. But if we can't stop the run, it will be a long game.

Stop the run and we win. It is all about the LB play. I feel good about our DB play. Stuff the RB and spy and be disciplined on the QB. DEs need to force the RB inside and the LBs need to make tackles.

I like two TEs against their LBs and blocking for our RBs. We have experience at TEs and RBs. A balanced attack is critical. Are the TEs blocking for the run game or in the passing routes?

The question might be is how are the Warriors going to adapt to playing on San Diego's grass field. For the Warriors the last 17 games have been played on turf. The first game last season was played on a grass field, where the Warriors lost to UCLA 44-10 and averaged slightly more than 1 yard a rush. Currently the Warriors RBs are averaging 3.76 yards a rush on turf fields can the RBs make the transition to grass fields (where the speed of the game is slower on grass)? The point spread, I see, opened at Draftkings at UH+21 and at Fanduel UH+17-(can you believe that). Here's a SDST team that's converting 17% on 3rd downs. For UH just play steady defense/high percentage risk and rewards and limit what's killing UHs defense the big chunk plays (10+ yards) and the outlook may be promising.

According to today's SA, Tsai reports
Receivers Zion Bowens, Chuuky Hines and Koali Nishigaya have received full medical clearance and are set to play in Saturday’s road game against San Diego State

This is great news. Bowens is quoted as saying that the Warriors new offense is a WRs dream.

1) Play mistake free. 2) Play error free. 3) Play with no stupid penalties. 4) Play with caught balls. 5) Play with good reads against the defense. 6) Play with well thrown passes. 7) Play with holes for the running backs made by the OL. 8) Play with solid tackling. 9) Play within the proper defensive alignments. 10) Play with positive coaching adjustments. 11) Play with mindful clock management.

Garanz going win.

Continue with what has happened during the previous games and garanz going lose.

Hopefully the Warriors defense spent the bye week improving on tackling. On the season there's been 70 mistackles with 12 occuring in the NMST game. In comparison Boise's defense has 26 mistackles after 5 games. The Warriors next opponent SDST has 77 mistackles on the season and hopefully the Warriors are able to exploit this weakness.

Looks like SDSU might be playing their 4th string QB.....since QB1 & QB2 are injured and QB3 quit....but also are bringing in a recent former QB to be the new QB coach.
