Wait, did Punahou just put their first string D in to keep Waianae at 52-0? Wow.

I'm guessing the starters insisted on playing.TheNewNORM wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 9:39 pm Wait, did Punahou just put their first string D in to keep Waianae at 52-0? Wow.

Kamehameha 21 Moanalua 21 F
There goes Kamehameha's best chance of winning a game this season. Their remaining opponents are us and St. Louis. The way they've looked so far, they need massive improvement to even challenge their fellow ILH Open teams.

Kahuku 35, Leilehua 14 2nd quarter
Seems like Kahuku is toying with Leilehua and likely just trying to put them away and rest their key players before next Saturday. Great effort by Leilehua, but will it be enough to finish above Moanalua and Waianae (who'll likely finish in the bottom half of the OIA Open)?

Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
Next week's Punahou-Kahuku game may be a preview of the state championship. It will be interesting to see if both sides unleash their full selection of plays, on both sides of the ball. I'd imagine both teams are super competitive and still want to win, even if the game doesn't affect the league races.gopunahou wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 7:35 pm Kahuku 35, Leilehua 14 2nd quarter

I thought the margin of this game would be worse than ours against Waianae. Hell, I thought it'd be worse than UH's against Vanderbilt.

Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
It's good that there are Open, D1, and D2 tiers for OIA and ILH teams. I remember Kahuku couldn't help but score 70, 80 points against Radford, McKinley, and some weaker OIA teams when it was just D1 and D2. I'd hate to see the final score of UH's game when they play at Michigan in the "Big House" in a couple of Saturdays from now. The spread will probably be around 50 points based on today's performance.
Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
It was 30 years ago that a mismatch between Kahuku and Kalani convinced the OIA to separate the haves and have-nots. Kalani trailed 75-12 through 3 quarters and ran out of healthy players.ChadFukuoka wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 9:20 pmIt's good that there are Open, D1, and D2 tiers for OIA and ILH teams. The ILH went divisional in 2002 after St. Louis would routinely hang 80 on Damien and Pac-Five. The unfortunate thing about that was that Iolani was part of the second division despite being one of the most competitive teams of the 90s.

Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
Great game between Campbell and Mililani, even though special teams struggled for both teams.
Even though Campbell lost, they know they can hang with Mililani. I think they'll give Kahuku as much of a hard time as Mililani will. And at least they gave Mililani much more of a challenge than St. Louis did. Speaking of which, the OIA might be stronger than the ILH this year.

I remember Damien was considering dropping football after being blown out so much. I also remember a lot of people cheering for Damien, when they lost to Aiea in the first D2 state championship. It was supposed to be a redemption story for Damien. That 2003 championship year was my freshman year in high school at Aiea.gopunahou wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 9:33 pmIt was 30 years ago that a mismatch between Kahuku and Kalani convinced the OIA to separate the haves and have-nots. Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
Because of low numbers in the early 2000s, a lot of people encouraged them to merge with Pac-Five, but Damien’s got too much pride to do that.ChadFukuoka wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 9:43 pmI remember Damien was considering dropping football after being blown out so much. Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
I don’t think Kamehameha will spend much more time in the Top Ten. Their chances of winning a game this season look as good as my chances of winning the lottery. I think Waipahu or Moanalua will replace them. Waipahu has looked impressive; I think they’ll give Aiea a run for its money.unpaid wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 2:54 am Week Four,

Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
The start of September signals a big weekend. St. Louis taking on Bishop Gorman while we travel to Kahuku. Our game against them looks as big as St. Louis’s preseason matchup against them in 2010 (the year Kahuku was disqualified from the OIA tournament) and our matchup against them in 2012. Kahuku treated the 2010 St. Louis like a playoff game, beating them 49-27. However, they hid a bunch of plays against us in the 2012 preseason matchup that they’d use in the state championship game, which was much worse for us.

Re: 2022 Open/D-I Top Ten
In any case, the winner of this game will assume the #1 spot until beaten by a local team. The loser maybe drops 2 places, but in either case will not impact their league record. Who knows, this may be a preview of the Open championship. One thing for sure, Kahuku faces Murderers Row with the start being Punahou, then @Campbell, @Bosco, @Kapolei, St. Francis, @Moanalua, then Mililani at home. All with no bye in between. Then OIA playoffs begins.gopunahou wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 3:37 am The start of September signals a big weekend. St. Louis taking on Bishop Gorman while we travel to Kahuku.
