I think two teams that snatched victory from the jaws of defeat--Waipahu and Iolani--will meet in the state tournament.

Punahou 43, St. Louis 19 F

I feel the way I felt in 2005, when we snapped 10-year, 20-game losing streak against St. Louis. That was the first of three wins against St. Louis that we earned in snapping their 19-year ILH championship streak. We'll need at least one more victory against them, but tonight proved that we can do it. And unlike 2005, we won't lose twice against Kamehameha, although we can't overlook them.

I think all divisions will have a pretty competitive state tournament. Open division Kahuku, mililani, Campbell or Kapolei and Punahou. Div 1 Waipahu, Aiea, Iolani, Lahainaluna, konawaena and Kapaa. Div 2 pearl city, nanakuli, pac 5, honokaa, kekaulike and waimea

May have some sleeper teams out there but after week 7, these are the teams that I believe will be fighting for a state championship.

The open division will definitely be a nice tournament down the stretch. I think Kahuku, Mililani and Punahou can beat each other on any given night. D1 will also be very competitive. Iolani seems vulnerable, Aiea will comeback and beat Waipahu later, Lahaina and Konawaena are quietly moving along. The 6 team format is going to be interesting. D2 seems wide open. You can't point to a dominating team. Waimea, Honokaa/KS-Hawaii, Nanakuli, Pearl City can all lay claim as having a shot. The there will always be a D2 surprise team that shows up in November. Going to be 3 great state brackets. Does anyone know where it will be played?

It’s disappointing that the Kahuku-Kapolei game won’t be on OC16 or xcast. I hope it’s streaming over youtube somehow. It’ll be the biggest test of Kapolei’s season. I don’t expect them to win, but catching Kahuku after their game against SJB will be interesting. I expect a Kahuku win by about 2 TD’s.

Kahuku-Kapolei has a YouTube page for tonight’s game. I think it is also on NFHS streaming.

Iolani just beat our second-level varsity team, 35-0. It was the first time their varsity team beat a team named Punahou since 2009. It was surprising that they took it easy on us in the last three quarters, scoring a grand total of 7 points. It’ll be even more surprising if they don’t thump their chests about this victory and consider it as big as beating our first-level varsity team. You know, the one that smoked St. Louis a week ago.

I wonder how that made Coach Look feel. I wonder if it compelled him to go all Snoop Dogg on the student section and scream STFU. Anyway, we might win one or two games for D2. And if Pac-Five did lose 52-7 to Kamehameha’s D2 team (as scoringlive said that did), we’ll likely beat them. Regardless of whether we win games or go winless as a D2 team, it’ll give our D2 players valuable experience and help once the season ends.

Regardless of what the Iolani student section chanted, they could’ve easily schedule non-conference games against Open teams. They could’ve played a game against us that wouldn’t count in the standings. They did that before in the early years after the ILH went divisional in 2002 (playing two matchups against us with one counting as a non-conference game). They could’ve done what Damien has done in baseball in recent years—play the top-level teams in the ILH regular season but compete against lower-level teams for a berth in the state tournament.

One surprising game tonight has been Waipahu-Roosevelt. Roosevelt leads 24-22 at the half. Still think Waipahu will win tonight, but this could be a wakeup call for them.

Kahuku 35, Kapolei 0 4th quarter

Don’t even think this’ll be the last meeting between these two teams.

if they did chant that, iolani lists a 5'-4" 195 lb. OL named brody iwasaki ... maybe he's "big bro" and they wanted more of him.

the other night during the punahou @ iolani girls volleyball broadcast, the iolani students were chanting "we want felipe" to get the announcer's attention. so i wouldn't take those chants too seriously.
