Ruffins was the top un-committed player in the state. It came down to Nevada and Hawaii for him before he chose the Wolfpack at a ceremony at Poly minutes ago.

"It was a tough decision and I actually didn't finalized it until last night," Ruffins said. "A big reason why I chose Nevada was because of their incoming recruiting class.

"I've personally seen a few of their prospects and played with them as well and I feel really good about the talent the coaches are bringing in and the direction the program is going."

Ruffins took his official visit to Nevada back in January before the February Signing Period. He decided to hold off signing so he could take one last official trip to Hawaii, which he took last weekend.

He developed a strong relationship with the Nevada coaching staff and especially OL coach Angus McClure.

"Coach Angus is an amazing person," Ruffins said. "From what I’ve seen on my visit there, he really cares for the kids and you can see he’s proud to be a part of The Pack.

"Coach Jordan is the other offensive line coach and he really seems like an older brother figure to the players he coaches and has relationships with them that’s more personal than a lot of other coaches you see. It made me feel really comfortable around them and I feel like if I go there, I’ll be taken care of extremely well."

Ruffins told us previously what his decision would be based on and said the Wolfpack just fit everything he was looking for.

“The biggest things I was looking for were comfort level, who can develop me and a finding strong culture between the players and coaches," Ruffins said. "Life after football matters so I was looking at alumni support and the networking opportunities and Nevada had all that for me."

Long Beach Poly (Calif.) offensive lineman Tyson Ruffins is the top un-committed player in the state but will take his final official visit later this week and we expect a commitment shortly after.

Ruffins didn’t sign in February, electing to take one final official visit. He had to wait until March due to the dead period the last three weeks but will head out to Hawaii on Thursday for a final official visit.

“I really wanted to visit Hawaii before making a commitment,” Ruffins said. “I visited Nevada the last weekend in January before the dead period and liked it there a lot. I did think about making a decision at that time but I really wanted to take one last visit.

“While I was in Hawaii for the Poly Bowl, me and my family were able to take a little visit to the campus and walk around. There were no coaches there, it was just us on our own walking the campus. It’s Hawaii, it’s a beautiful place and I’m excited to get back.”

Hawaii OL coach Roman Sapolu is the lead recruiter with Ruffins.

“I’m excited to sit down with him and learn about his coaching philosophy and how he does things,” Ruffins said. “I want to see how he coaches his players and how he connects with everyone there.

“His dad is Jesse Sapolu, who obviously was a great player so I know I can learn a lot and get developed there. Like I said, Hawaii is a beautiful place and I love the people and the culture. I’m very comfortable there and now I want to check out the football side of things and see what kind of fit it will be for me there.”

Ruffins will return home from Hawaii on Sunday and said he hopes to make his decision shortly after his visit.

“The biggest things I’m looking for are comfort level, who can develop and a strong culture between the players and coaches. Life after football matters too so I’m looking at alumni support and the networking opportunities.”
