Loved watching Abe play. He was the surest tackling CB I've seen play at UH. Great cover skills too. I don't recall former Falcons 1st round draft pick UAB WR Roddy White making any catches against him in the Hawaii Bowl (I seem to recall some catches against Kelvin Millhouse).

Who else could it be? I am old enough to remember watching him play DT at UH. They used to put the picture of the defender who made the tackle on the big screen at Aloha Stadium, and he popped up quite a few times.

I normally post only on the high school threads, but I saw your post on the sportshawaii opening screen. I was thinking that if York were to join Chang's staff, Mililani alumni would be pissed, because York put their alma mater on the football map. Mililani is now right up there with St Louis and Kahuku. That's a very exclusive "club". Interestingly, Chang, of course, is a St Louis alumnus. York, meanwhile, is an Iolani alumnus. If York were to jump Mililani's ship, I wonder who Mililani would hire to replace him.

I would think Mililani alumni are defecating bricks. I've got to believe they don't want York to go. I can't even begin to imagine how many texts York might be receiving right about now.
Other than between Saint Louis & Damien back in the day, the only real ILH rivalry is between Punahou and everyone else.

Would appreciate you elaborating further on why the Mililani alumni would be pissed (at who?) if York left. When the Lee brothers left Saint Louis for UH, my Saint Louis alum friends were definitely sad (some depressed) but they weren't pissed. That's why the Lee brothers were welcomed back with open arms.

BTW my Saint Louis alum friends confirmed to me that Timmy is tight with York....and has been for years.
@kapakahi:

Well, York put Mililani High on the map for football. So, I'd assume Mililani alumni would be pissed if he left. Perhaps they wouldn't be pissed at York, but wouldn't they be pissed if he left? I.e., they might not be pissed at York, but they'd probably be pissed at the fact that he left.

Also, I think there are several high school rivalries other than the ones you mentioned. The biggest is probably Iolani School vs Punahou School (though they're in different divisions for football). A lot of guys don't like Punahou School, so I guess you could say that there's a rivalry between Punahou School and all other schools. But, I'd suggest another strong rivalry is Punahou School vs Kamehameha Schools. My understanding is that those two schools have not liked each other for at least 45 years. And, speaking of Mililani High, they have a bitter rivalry with Leilehua High. There are also rivalries between Kailua High and Castle High, and between Moanalua High and Radford High. Bear in mind that these rivalries are overall rivalries, not necessarily football-only rivalries, again because some of those rivals are in different divisions for football, so some of them don't play each other in football. But, they're still rivals overall.

One of the best run support corners that I have seen at UH.

I assume Darnell or Ma'a would take over. Many of the coaches been there for a long time. Yorks done about awesome job of recruiting Waianae and Ewa kids to Mililani and the blueprint is set.
@Palolo_2LA:

Yes, I've heard that York had been doing a lot of recruiting; sort of like the Cal Lee of the OIA. What I didn't know was that he was raiding Waianae High and Campbell High. That must have pissed-off the alumni of those two schools. If York left, Maa would probably be the best replacement. Why? 1.) He's a Mililani alumnus. 2.) He played Pros (I think. Right? He did play in the NFL, right?) Despite all that, though, would he be able to lead and mentor the Trojans the way York did? Also, would he be as good a recruiter as York?

A lot of great Assistants already listed . . . One more that could bring succession consistency would be Keith Bhonapha, who has worked with HC Petersen at Boise, then went with Petersen to Washington, and now Associate Head Coach at Boise State again. Has been consistently strong in recruiting. Doubt that UH could afford Keith, but imagine if they made it happen.

Ma'a had a long NFL career and was a stud. At 260 he was always one of the strongest players in the league. As a kid, I remember him doing lunges the length of the Ching Field w/80 lb "logs".

A Bronco during those superbowl wins with Elway, TD, Rod Smith, Sharpe. His Defensive team had Atwater and Romanowski. two guys that would be suspect to the targeting rule they use now lol

This seems to have had the biggest impact on Hawaii football of all time. He'd make a great addition for the team.

Kansas City had a linebacker called “Contact”. He is the only NFL player to wear special padding on the outside of his helmet to protect the players he was hitting.

Would like to see Kody Cooke get serious consideration to be retained on-staff as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. His relationship with the players is one of mutual respect.

@poidog:

I usually post only on the high school threads, but I saw your post on sportshawaii's opening screen. You mentioned Kahuku High and Mililani High. What annoys me is that more players from those two schools don't play for UH. I'm a UH alumnus, and would love to see UH kick butt. Now, we know UH is no Alabama or Georgia. Still, it's the home team. Every player at every school on Oahu knows that. Sure, UH isn't as good as some mainland colleges. But, that means those players from Kahuku High and Mililani High have a better chance of seeing playing time at UH, or perhaps even starting, right? So, I don't know if any Kahuku High players or Mililani High players are reading this, but I hope they'll consider UH. Of course, a lot will depend on what kind of O Chang installs at UH. I.e., obviously, if he installs a pass-heavy O, RBs might be less inclined to consider UH. If he installs a run-heavy O, receivers--and, kick-butt QBs who are great passers--might be less inclined to consider.

And of course, this thread has been talking about how York might get offered an AC position at UH. As I mentioned in a previous post, I assume that that would be bad news for Mililani alumni, as York has taken Mililani High to the very top echelon of Hawaii high school football. If he leaves, who would take over? Would Mililani High continue to kick butt in football? I.e., what might be good for York and UH, might not be good for Mililani High and its alumni. I mean, I guess I'm saying that any kind of career move creates winners and losers. One party stands to gain, while another party stands to lose.
