Crazy to believe that Kahuku has not 1 player listed in the ranking for either 2021 or 2022.unpaid wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 6:10 am 247sports has released their latest evaluation of national hs football talent. @teamhawaii: And that's an ominous sign for Kahuku alumni. Their alma mater just isn't where it used to be just two years ago. They're starting to fall behind.

Zealand Matagi is probably the most talented RB in the state. He was also All State. For him not to be recognized falls on the football program & coaches.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 10:32 am @teamhawaii: And that's an ominous sign for Kahuku alumni. @teamhawaii: Well, if he's that good, shouldn't those national experts know? I agree that Matagi really is a blue-chipper. So, if you and I know that, perhaps it falls on those national "experts" for not knowing it. And, it's not just you and I who know about Matagi. The fact that he was selected All-State shows that local sportswriters and such, know it.teamhawaii wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 11:03 amZealand Matagi is probably the most talented RB in the state. Re: 2021 Football Recruits
Not a big fan of Sterling Carvalho. I don't see him promoting his student athletes to college coaches. I wonder if he has any college connections to be honest. Remember 2020 recruiting class from Kahuku was more credit to Vavae Tata & Makoa Freitas years. The 2021 & 2022 class is Carvalho's upbringing and it shows with no listed recruits (as of now).HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 11:21 am@teamhawaii: Well, if he's that good, shouldn't those national experts know? Re: 2021 Football Recruits
@teamhawaii: Well, I've always wondered how much a high school coach should be responsible for as far as college recruitment is concerned. If I were a high school football coach, I think I'd be consumed by the Xs and O's. If I've got a blue-chip player like Matagi, then I'm going to try to use his ability as an RB to the fullest. I'd work with my OC to design an offensive package that takes advantage of Matagi's skills, and let his play do the talking to recruiters. I'll tell you what: As a UH alumnus, I'd try to steer all my best players to UH. But of course, some of them will want to go away and play for the major schools, and that would be OK by me. I'd certainly put-in a good word for those players if those major colleges came calling. But, I really wouldn't want to get wrapped-up in the college scene. To me, I'd think I have to stay grounded in coaching high school ball as best I can, and leave college offers to the players and their parents. I'm a high school coach, not a scout or recruitment specialist. I'd think I need to stay grounded in the nitty-gritty and brass tacks of running a high school football team.teamhawaii wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 2:43 pmNot a big fan of Sterling Carvalho. Re: 2021 Football Recruits
247 is missing out on Zealand Matagi. He has prototype size for a RB in the 5-10 200 lb range.Put up 1,418 yds and 19 TD's in the Open Division in 2019. Should be a three-star at least.
He passes the eye test, has the stats against tough competition,so what gives? I don't know, but there could be a few things involved from the point of view of the scouts. When you look at the evaluations these guys write,a few things stand out. They prefer to see a prospect in person to see if the hype is real.Scouts love players who play two or three sports at an all-star level. They adore fast electronic 100m and 40yd dash times, esp the 40 times that they can see in person in a camp/combine setting. Exposure is the common theme here, but camps got shut down in March,so now, someone who may be being overlooked is going to have to rely on game tape from whatever games can be played this fall.

Re: 2021 Football Recruits
2022 QB Jayden Maiava,Kaimuki (Apparently he is not transferring to BG after all) had a good day throwing the ball at the Winner Circle Athletics Top 100 Showcase in LA this past Saturday. www.wearesc.com was in attendance at the camp/combine setting that involved hand- timed sprints, various drills, and one on one competitions. The article spotlights Maiava and others who stood out a little bit.
Update:
247sports was at the Top 100 Showcase as well. Their report goes into a little more depth on Maiava and also mentioned John-Keawe Sagapolutele as one of the standout players.

Re: 2021 Football Recruits
Jayden Maiava QB-PP Kaimuki 2022 cracked ESPN's Junior 300 list at No.179 with a four star rank. I've added him to the July list of top Hawaii recruits in the previous post. Tevarua Tafiti Punahou also made the ESPN Junior 300 at No.232 as a blue-chip four-star recruit for the class of 2022 to go along with his 247 Composite Four star rank earlier this year.
Re: 2021 Football Recruits
Kalan Ellis OL St.Louis has received a three star rank from the scouts at Rivals. Ellis is back on the list of Hawaii's top football prospects.

Re: 2021 Football Recruits
@unpaid: I'm glad to hear it. I'm not exactly a fan of St Louis School, but it wouldn't kill me if they were to win State Open. But, I remain quite certain there'll be no football this school year, not even during 2nd semester. COVID-19 is too rampant, especially here on Oahu. Here we are, in Lockdown II.
