Hey if he leaves after 3-4 years but gets us to phase 3 he has a great track record of mentoring future HCs. Also Rolo bailed after 4 years.
On face value he is the most experienced new Head Coach since June Jones

Re: Todd Graham officially new coach?
He coached a damn fine team in Tulsa when they beat us back in the day. He has coached 4 D1 programs. ASU said goodbye to him to the tune of $12 mill. He's 55 years old and experienced...seasoned. We scored. I think are back to another McMackin. You can hate Mack all you want but he delivered Hawaii 2 of the top head coaches in college football today. Let's hope Graham can deliver in kind.EITSwarrior wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 6:19 pm Aside from those concerns, looking at his past coaching staff, Graham knows how to pick his assistants. Many have gone on and still are head coaches in college. Let’s see if he can do it here.

Welcome Coach Graham ! Thank You for applying and becoming the Next Head Coach at University of Hawaii . I’m very excited and know you will succeed in taking UH to a higher level. I’m sure the fans will return to Aloha Stadium with your exciting offense and defensive expertise. Your accomplishments are very impressive . Many of your former coaches and players have moved on and succeeded . I’m sure you will bring in great recruits because of your proven track record . Mahalo and welcome aboard ! Can’t wait to the upcoming season!

What are the similarities?
Why don’t we stop these kind of comparisons already. Greg McMackin was here because June Jones asked him to come. He wasn’t a head coach when he arrived. He was a terrific defensive coordinator.
Graham is a proven head coach from a Big Conference. This is a great hire. People need to cut the crap about embracing culture and worrying about comparisons to past coaches. Let the guy coach. He hasn’t even taken a microphone yet.

It was Matlin that brought up that he has to be a fit for Hawaii.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 2:34 amWhat are the similarities?

Here's his quote
“You have fit for Hawaii. And fit for Hawaii doesn’t mean you had to play here. It doesn’t mean you had to be here. But you have to be able to fit into Hawaii. I think fit is definitely important here."

I just think it is backwards thinking by old timers.
Our culture is no better than anyone else’s. And we should be embracing the culture of others instead of demanding they embrace ours. Just my opinion.

Honestly, when you look at it, even though Norm Chow was kama'aina, he still came into the program when the fanbase had some negativity already. Social media has done nothing but feed that ugly monster. If we want to avoid that situation again, I'd rather the fanbase show him what Aloha is and get behind him until we have a legit reason not to under his regime.

I'm fine with that as long as he doesn't come in and start complaining about things we don't have like others have.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 3:13 amYeh, I get it.Irse wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 2:54 am

I think this could be a home run hire. He has won everywhere he has coached. Even if he leaves after he's been successful for a bigger payday, he has been very good at picking and mentoring assistants so they could be candidates or someone like Stutz who would have more experience coaching D1 might be given a chance. Or he may win and decide he wants to stay.
As far as his culture, he's from Texas and I lived there for 6 years and almost stayed there so I'm fine with that.

If you look at his resume, he does done what Rolo still hopes to achieve. Success at mid-tier, then success at big conference.Bleed_Green wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 3:48 am Honestly, when you look at it, even though Norm Chow was kama'aina, he still came into the program when the fanbase had some negativity already. Graham is an upgrade. And doubt Rolo will achieve this level of success. Pride rock is yesterday. We have an excellent selection. We don’t deserve him. We are backwater with 20k fans.

I was one of the minority that didn't buy into the whole Lion King shtick, or rather I just didn't get it. For me it was weird and out of place.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 4:12 amIf you look at his resume, he does done what Rolo still hopes to achieve. I agree with that. The Cole McDonald face paint looked kind of stupid to me also. Norm Chow on the other hand went to the opposite extreme. Too clean cut and no results.Bleed_Green wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 4:32 am ..... I was one of the minority that didn't buy into the whole Lion King shtick, or rather I just didn't get it. I just want to see good football. Local chatter and gossip is not important to me. I want to hear football spoken at the press conference. But if he feels obligated to say somethings to calm those that worry about “appropriate” localism — that is fine with me. I just can’t be bothered with that stuff anymore.

Re: Todd Graham officially new coach?
I was looking up Notre Dame's 2019 season high lights on Youtube and putting superior athletes aside, OC Chip Long looks very promising if we can land him. They had receivers super wide open, and they are not all that much better than Byrd and Ward. Plus, Chevan is as elusive QB as Book is and could do very well in designed read option plays, infact he and Cole already had some good runs this year when Rolo drew that play up. I think we'll need bigger lineman though for the zone blocking. I'm not throwing all my eggs into that basket though. Still hoping that we get a run-n-shoot disciple as our OC.

Whoa, who do you think supports the UH program and makes it unique? Who do you think supports the Michigan fan base of 100K people in the stands when Hawaii played them? Every state in the US has a different culture and as you live there you have to adjust to it as much as you would have to if you lived in a foreign culture. You either embrace the culture of the place you live or you die a slow death. I like the fact that they have the Aunties at the Volleyball games. Being accepting of other cultures is way different than having to embrace a culture because its being forced on us.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 3:13 amYeh, I get it.Irse wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 2:54 am

Nah, you don’t have to adjust to anything. That is mythology. There is 30,000 empty seats in the stadium. People can be themselves and sit where ever they want and be whoever they want. No culture owns the stadium. The only culture I care about when I enter the stadium is football.shrek2 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 6:51 am

Also, if my auntie needs a cancer specialist, I want her to have the best. I am not going to tell the doctor he needs to adjust to the culture. If he can cure cancer, he is my choice. I honestly think if there is any adjustment to be made, it is locals who have to adjust the arrogance of thinking we are better. I got news - we aren’t.
