2022 Razorback Offense

Post by HawaiianHogster »

2022 Razorback Offense Has High Powered Potential
https://www.arkansasfight.com/2021/12/2 ... -potential

The future of the Razorback offense won’t slow down. Not one bit. Why? Because Kendal Briles, it’s returnees and incoming recruits won’t let it backslide. We all know that a potential Heisman contending quarterback in KJ Jefferson is ready to let loose in 2022. This team goes much deeper than its fearless leader though.

The 2021 offense had the most 30-point games (eight) since 2011 when the Tyler Wilson led group had nine. There’s still one game left to go and at least tie the record during bowl season.

Jefferson had the most touchdowns and total yards by a Razorback quarterback since Austin Allen in 2016. The revitalization process for Razorback football would still be near ground zero if it weren’t for Jefferson. That’s just how valuable the redshirt sophomore from Sardis, Miss. has been in 2021.

With the ability to develop quarterbacks even week-to-week, Briles deserves a lot of credit for how this offense progressed during the season. There’s not a single player in the country that got better through the season as Jefferson. Honestly, it was admirable how many steps forward the offense took after the Georgia game.

There could be a small dip at the wide receiver position if Treylon Burks does indeed leave Arkansas for the NFL. That leaves us with one question: Will any local or state of Arkansas businesses come together and give him a $7 million deal to return to the Hogs for one more season? A shot at a championship is pretty much the only thing left to accomplish for the Razorbacks greatest wide receiver ever.

($7 mil/4 years is what the highest drafted receiver, Jamar Chase, was signed for last season by the Cincinnati Bengals.)

We all know that a Burks return for the 2022 season, although unlikely, would make it even more special in Fayetteville. So special that fans expectations would be championship or bust based solely off the offensive ingenuity.

2022 Returners:

Jaqualyn Crawford-Redshirt Senior: 3 receptions, 27 yards

Warren Thompson-Redshirt Senior: 18 receptions, 292 yards and 2 touchdowns.

John David White-Redshirt Junior: 1 reception for 19 yards

Darin Turner-Redshirt Sophomore:

Harper Cole-Redshirt Sophomore

Ketron Jackson-Sophomore: 5 receptions, 97 yards and 1 touchdown

Chris Harris-Redshirt Freshman

Jaedon Wilson-Redshirt Freshman

Bryce Stephens-Redshirt Freshman

Incoming Freshmen:

Four-star wide receiver: Isaiah Sategna

Four-star wide receiver: Quincey McAdoo

Potential Addition:

Four-star wide receiver: Samuel Mbake

It’s also worth noting that Arkansas could move Rocket Sanders back to wide receiver with the potential loss of Burks. However, that is just a part of the rumor mill at this point.

All the talk here has been about the receivers but what about a running back room? Position coach Jimmy Smith has these guys playing with confidence and physicality reminiscent to the Houston Nutt era.

With Trelon Smith potentially leaving (he does have one year left of eligibility) since he did participate in Senior Day activities the Hogs still have plenty to work with there.

This room has two players who have already rushed for over 500 yards in Smith and Jefferson. Sanders (1 yard) and the bully Dominique Johnson (2 yards) could both surpass the 500 yard mark during the bowl game.

When you return a running game that is in the top 15 nationally it gives this team the potential to be very good. How scary would an offense be with a dominant runner in Sanders? How about a developed speedster in AJ Green? Or the biggest bully of them all in Johnson who has an offseason to get stronger? Add in a slasher in incoming freshman Rashod Dubinion and a between the tackles guy in James Jointer and that could make this running game hard to stop.

Depth Chart:
Trelon Smith: Redshirt Senior

Dominique Johnson: Redshirt Sophomore

Rocket Sanders: Sophomore

AJ Green: Sophomore

Rashod Dubinion: Freshman

James Jointer: Freshman

Know the Foe: Hogs to face Penn State in Outback Bowl
https://247sports.com/college/arkansas/ ... 177386685/
The Arkansas Razorbacks (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will face Penn State in the Outback Bowl on January 1 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (Fla.). Kickoff time is set for 11 a.m. (CT), and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

"We're so excited to play in a New Year's Day bowl against a great opponent in Penn State University," said Arkansas coach Sam Pittman. "It's been an exciting day for us, the University of Arkansas and our program. Can't wait to get down to the sunshine of Tampa, Florida and eat a couple of Bloomin' Onions."

It will be the 43rd all-time bowl appearance for Arkansas and first since falling to Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl in 2016. The Razorbacks were set to face TCU in last season's Texas Bowl, but that game was canceled due to COVID. It will also be the first Florida bowl for the Hogs since 2006. The Nittany Lions will be making their 51st bowl appearance and a fifth trip to the Outback Bowl, where they are 3-1 all-time.

Surprisingly, Arkansas and Penn State have never met in the history of the two programs. The Hogs are 2-8 all-time versus current Big Ten teams. We will obviously dive deep into the matchup from every angle imaginable between now and game day, but here's a quick snapshot look at the Nittany Lions.

HOW THEY'VE FARED

Penn State, led by James Franklin, finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record and a 4-5 mark in Big Ten play, good enough for fourth in the East Division standings. The Nittany Lions rattled off five straight wins to start the season, including a season-opening victory at Wisconsin and a 28-20 home win over Auburn in Week 3.

The first loss of the season for Penn State came on Oct. 9 at Iowa, and the Nittany Lions dropped a nine overtime contest to Illinois and took a 33-24 loss at Ohio State the following two weeks. Penn State went 2-2 down the stretch with wins over Maryland and Rutgers and close losses at home to Michigan and on the road against Michigan State in the regular season finale.

PENN STATE BY THE NUMBERS

Here's a look at where the Nittany Lions stack up in several main statistical categories with their FBS ranking in parentheses:

Scoring offense: 26.25 ppg (No. 81)
Scoring defense: 16.75 ppg (No. 7)
Total offense: 380.8 ypg (No. 82)
Total defense: 344.0 ypg (No. 36)
Rushing offense: 106.4 ypg (No. 118)
Rushing defense: 135.7 ypg (No. 44)
Passing offense: 274.4 ypg (No. 22)
Passing defense: 208.3 ypg (No. 34)
3rd Down Conversions: 38.5% (No. 76)
3rd Down Defense: 36.55% (No. 40)
Red Zone Offense: 32/39 (No. 81)
Red Zone Defense: 28/42 (No. 3)
Takeaways: 19 (No. 37)
Turnovers: 13 (No. 32)
OFFENSIVE WEAPONS

Redshirt senior quarterback Sean Clifford has held the keys to the offense for Penn State. The 6-2, 219-pound Cincinnati (Ohio) native has completed 62.4% (247-396) of his passes this season for 2,912 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. Clifford surpassed the 300-yard passing mark four times this season, including a 313-yard, three touchdown performance in the regular season finale against Michigan State.

Senior wide receiver Johan Dotson has been Clifford's primary target. His tremendous season has included 91 receptions for 1,182 yards and 12 touchdowns. Sophomore Parker Washington has hauled in 57 catches of his own for 722 yards and four scores, while fellow sophomore KeAndre Lambert-Smith is third on the team with 31 grabs for 447 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Penn State has a pair of backs in sophomore Keyvone Lee and junior Noah Cain who have both surpassed the 100-carry mark on the season. Lee leads the way with 495 yards on 104 carries with two scores. Cain has pitched in 322 yards on 101 carries and leads the team with four rushing touchdowns.

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS

A stingy Penn State defense is led by senior linebacker Ellis Brooks. His 100 tackles on the season ranks fifth in the Big Ten. Fellow linebacker Brandon Smith is next with 81 total tackles of his own.

Redshirt senior defensive end Arnold Ebiketie has been the team's leading pass rusher on the year. His 9.5 sacks ranks third in the Big Ten and he leads the conference with 18.0 tackles for loss. Senior safety Ji'Ayir Brown paces the secondary with four interceptions -- third in the Big Ten -- and five pass breakups.

EARLY MATCHUP MUSINGS

On the surface, this appears to be a solid draw for the Razorbacks in terms of overall aesthetics and comes with the excitement of a New Year's Day game in Florida as well as the first meeting between the two programs.

Penn State sputtered down the stretch, losing five of its last seven games, but they have proven to be a tough out against strong competition. The Nittany Lions largest margin of defeat was nine points against Ohio State. The other four were decided by four points or less, including narrow defeats to highly-ranked opponents Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State. Arkansas ended the regular season playing some of its best football, winning four of five down the stretch and taking No. 1 Alabama to the final minute.

This game has the makings of a slugfest. Penn State has a strong passing attack but has struggled mightily to establish the run. The Nittany Lions have used a tremendous defense to create close games all season. The Nittany Lions had two shutouts in Big Ten play and only allowed two opponents to score more than 23 points this season. However, it remains to be seen what impact will come from losing long-time defensive coordinator, Brent Pry, last week when he was named head coach at Virginia Tech.

Sam Pittman talks bowl prep, provides injury updates

0 the Arkansas Razorbacks received good news Sunday afternoon with the announcement they had been selected to face Penn State in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (Fla.).

A bowl trip has been a long time coming for the Hogs, who unfortunately had COVID cancel last season's Texas Bowl game against TCU as they were loading the bus to head to Houston. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman expects his team, most of which have never played in a bowl, to be fired up for the opportunity.

"I think they're unbelievably excited," said Pittman. "There's not many of them in there that's been to a bowl. So, to get to a New Year's Day bowl, and one as prestigious as the Outback Bowl, they'll be ready and they'll be excited. It'll make practice a little bit easier for them I would say."

There's a lot of time between now and kickoff at 11 a.m. (CT) on January 1. With that in mind, Pittman plans to use most of his early practices, which will get rolling Friday, for the Razorbacks to focus on themselves before beginning to turn the attention towards Penn State in a couple weeks. Arkansas will get a break right around the Christmas holiday before hitting the road to Tampa on Dec. 26 to begin the week of bowl preparations on site.

"We’re going to start practice this week Friday and Saturday," said Pittman. "Monday will be our prep day which means our kids won’t be in. Our coaches will. It’s the first day of the dead period. We’ll practice the rest of that week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, be off that weekend. And then we’ll practice up to that Wednesday at noon. We’ll practice Wednesday morning the 22nd, let the kids off the 23rd, the 24th and 25th, and then the 26th is our travel day to Tampa.

"We’ll take a team picture in our suits like we said we would with our three trophies and get on a plane and fly out there. The game is on Saturday and we’ll have a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday type regular week.

"The question was when will we start on Penn State. Probably not until the 20th. I think these first six practices will be just nothing about but ourself. I think if we start talking and practicing about Penn State earlier than that, I think we could have negative results when we get there. So, we’ll have a segment or two that week before Christmas and then we’ll rev up certainly full fledge when we get down to Tampa."

As exciting as bowl games are for the fanbase and players, the additional practices that come along with it are invaluable to the coaching staff as it gets an opportunity to look ahead at the future while evaluating the younger talent that will be relied on moving forward. While Pittman wants to ensure all the main contributors get to the Outback Bowl as healthy as possible, he acknowledged it'll still be a physical few practices coming up for the youngsters with a spring ball atmosphere.

"We’ll do some hitting and some scrimmaging with the young kids," said Pittman. "Friday, Saturday won’t be really physical on our older guys. We want to get timing of throwing and catching and things back and some conditioning with the older guys.

"Young guys will hit, obviously, throughout this process more than the older guys, and of course, until you get around 8-10 days out from the game. But we may look at some guys at different positions and different things like that, just try to use it a little bit more spring ball-ish but not with the physicality of it with the older guys. We want to take our good players to the party, you know."

As far as injuries are concerned, at the moment, Pittman feels confident his team is about as healthy as it can be, aside from the season-ending injuries that have been sustained, obviously. A couple guys who were banged up last time out leading up to the Missouri game, running back Dominique Johnson and defensive back Malik Chavis, should both be back at practice at the end of the week.

"He’s fine," Pittman said when asked about Johnson. "Saw Chavis. He’s back. He’ll be ready to go. I think besides the season-ending injuries we’ve had, I think everybody else… At least today. We’re not going to just run out there in t-shirts all 15 practices. But I think today we’re in pretty good shape."

Another consideration, and one that has become more prevalent in recent years, is the possibility of players electing to opt out of playing in the bowl to prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. Those decisions will come on an individual basis. Obviously, Pittman can't say for sure just yet, but he feels confident that the guys who got Arkansas to this point will have the desire to see it through.

"I think we’ll have everybody, but I really don’t know," said Pittman. "We’ve got a lot of kids just because somebody else does it, I don’t think they look at that. The opt out deal became popular, there was a whole bunch more opting in, though.

"If you really look at it, nobody opts out for a playoff game because they don’t want to hurt the team. I feel like we’ve got a whole lot of kids on our team that wouldn’t opt out simply because they don’t want to hurt the team. So as of right now, I don’t have anyone that I know of that is willing to opt out of the game." https://twitter.com/i/status/1467869437537632262

Razorbacks' turnaround season has garnered recognition from the football coaches for Sam Pittman
ALLHOGS STAFF
Arkansas’ Sam Pittman, who has engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in all of college football, was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 2 Coach of the Year on Monday.

Three coaches with state connections were the winners in their regions.

Under the second-year coach, the Razorbacks have won eight games in 2021, the most regular-season wins for the program since 2011, after winning eight games total in the three seasons prior to Pittman’s tenure at the helm.

The Hogs started the year with an unblemished 4-0 mark and rose to No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, the team’s highest ranking since 2011, as Pittman became one of only 14 SEC coaches in history to take over a team with a losing record and lead it to the top 10 in the AP Poll in their first two seasons.

This year, Pittman’s squad won four non-conference games, going undefeated outside of league play for the first time since 2016, and posted a 4-4 mark in Southeastern Conference action, the most league wins since 2015.

For the first time in history, Arkansas captured all three of the program’s trophy games, beating No. 7 Texas A&M in the Southwest Classic, winning at LSU in the Battle for the Golden Boot and topping Missouri in the Battle Line Rivalry.

Pittman led the Hogs, who are one of an SEC-record 13 bowl eligible programs, to a third-place finish in the SEC West, the team’s best finish since 2015.

He is the fifth Arkansas head coach in history to lead the Razorbacks to a bowl game berth in each of their first two seasons, joining Houston Nutt (199899), Ken Hatfield (1984-85), Lou Holtz (1977-78) and John Barnhill (1946-47).

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners, who are selected by active members of the AFCA who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions, will be honored on Sunday, Jan. 9, during the 2022 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

The AFCA will also announce the 2021 Werner Ladder AFCA FBS National Coach of the Year on Sunday, Jan. 9.

The regional winners, including Pittman, Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell (Region 1), Michigan State’s Mel Tucker (Region 3), UTSA’s Jeff Traylor (Region 4) and Utah State’s Blake Anderson (Region 5), are finalists for National Coach of the Year.

Traylor was an assistant coach on Chad Morris' staff with the Hogs in 2018-19 and Anderson is the former coach at Arkansas State.
