2018, New Kickoff rule

#1 Post by stranger808 » Fri Apr 13, 2018 6:55 pm

"According to Greg Johnson of NCAA.com, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved a new rule that will allow players to call for a fair catch anywhere inside the 25-yard line on kickoffs and have it result in a touchback, with the football being placed at the 25-yard line."

I guess it helps our kickers as they can't kick it deep into the end zone anyways. Any thoughts from Warrior fans? Good or bad rule.

Kickoff strategy has always been an integral part of the game. But with the advances in pads and helmets, along with advances in player's physical training, injuries are heightened, especially with the recognition of head injuries/concussions. I think that the game has to evolve to try to protect the players' best interests in the long run.

The high and short kickoffs from the past couple of seasons was due to Mayur Chaudhari's strategy, not so much the strength of the kicker's legs IMHO.

Maybe might see the use of more on-side, squib and pooch kicks now?

okay, I have a serious question...can a squib kick be fair caught? If not, squib kick it is.

This is a terrible rule since games are won and lost on field position. Pinning the other team within the 25 yard line is critical to winning and losing. Of course, not the UH defense as of the last couple of years.

Squib kicks touch the ground so yah, I wonder what the ruling would be. Can you fair catch a punt that hits the ground first? I would imagine that this would apply either way.

once the ball touches the ground no fair catch can be made. that's why kickers try get the ball to bounce off the ground first when kicking an on side kick.

but, here's another question: since kickoffs are free balls, can a kicking team signal for a fair catch and attempt to catch the ball?
