Re: 2016 Presidential Election
I hope people remember the increase of hate crimes against Asian Americans especially in NY, SF and Oakland Chinatowns after Trump started the rumors about Covid being created in a Chinese lab and callously calling the disease "Kung Flu."

Re: 2016 Presidential Election
@shrek2: LOVE that movie! It came-out in '65; I had a mean crush on Brigitta. Wait! I'm not a perv! She was 13 in the movie, and I was in high school in the mid-'70s. Therefore, she was actually older than I in '65. The movie was basically a musical, so there were a lot of songs on the soundtrack. My favorite was, "The Hills are Alive", but only when the von Trapp children were singing it inside their home to the baroness, just when Captain von Trapp had entered after talking with Maria outside, and he eventually joined them in the song. The song was so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. The beautiful harmonization of the children still gives me goose bumps when I watch it today.
By the way, I share your political position: I'm a Democrat and will vote for Harris.

I feel you man. Wait, was Brigitta, Angela Cartwright? I forget. Julie Andrews made two great movies that decade in my opinion; the other one was Hawaii with Max Von Sydow. I was lucky enough to drive down to Salsburg, Austria and I saw the hillsides on the Alps and I swear that was the hillside that they filmed the opening scene to Sound of Music; and you're right, it did make me well up with good feelings.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 7:15 pm @shrek2: LOVE that movie! Yesterday, I saw a sidewalk spray painted with stenciled sign saying "Trump 2024" all along this outdoor mall. I asked one of the guys at the gas station about it and he said yeah, its spray painted in six different places in front of various establishments and they haven't gotten around to cleaning it all up. At one of Trump's rally this week, I think, they were chanting "send them back;" which is not about illegal aliens but legal citizens who they don't like. So, I would urge everyone who can, to vote their conscience and against hate in this country.
Re: 2016 Presidential Election
Honestly, I respect the ideals of both parties. However, action speaks louder than words. The Democrats have simply done more for this country. Also, I always vote for the person. One candidate is clearly less weird than the other. The weird one has far too many of his former key-position-holders who simply hate him. His first secretary of state called him a moron after quitting on him. Many others did likewise until he found like-minded morons to fill key positions in his idea of governance.

1. Yes; Brigitta was played by Cartwright. As I mentioned, I had a mean crush on her. I adored her more during "The Lonely Goatherd" song, but "The Hills are Alive" affected me more deeply emotionally. Again, I was younger than she at the time; I worshipped her.
2. Trump supporters here can do whatever they want, but we can be about 99% certain that Harris will carry Hawaii. Hawaii is a solidly Democratic state. I don't know about you, but I sense racism amongst most Trump supporters.

Re: 2016 Presidential Election
Yup, Angela Cartwright was a cutie. A friend of mine took a trip to Austria with his wife about 10 years ago and they had a Sound of Music tour. When I was there I just went exploring because most of Salzburg was so old that it really looked like it never changed since the movie. When I was driving past the hills in the Alps that looked like the place where Julie was singing the Hills are Alive, I started to sing the song as well, much to the dismay of my travel partners. But hey, I was feeling it.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 5:19 pm @shrek2:

Yeah, Trump is a racist but for a lot of people in these battleground states, it's not a disqualifier for not voting for him. When he won in 2016, I remember seeing something posted by the Hawaii Travel bureau about states they said were not safe to go to because it was unsafe for people that were non-white. Also, because he says a lot of crazy things like someone who has a loose tounge, a lot of people feel like they can behave the same way. Because he's also exibited a lack of respect for women in his personal life, I had two women who were in their 60s back in 2017, 2018 tell me that they were date raped with drugs. I've never before in my life although people confide in me, tell me that they were date raped. I haven't heard this kind of story since then but I have to believe it was because we had a bad leader at the time. Hopefully we can get a leader who's not going to abuse women, show racism and tell lies.

@shrek2:
1. Looking back on the movie, I wish that both Cartwright and I were a little older in '65. I mean, if both she and I were about five years older, I think it would have been more ideal. Even though I was younger than she at the time, I'm a little embarrassed that I could have had a crush on someone who was only 13. When I watch the movie today, yeah, I see that she was very pretty at the time. But, she was only 13, so I kind of cringe. I have to tell myself: "Remember, you were younger than she in '65, so it was OK to have a crush on her".
2. Given all the terrible things that Trump has said and done over the past four years--especially during this Presidential campaign--I can come to only one conclusion: Racism is the only thing keeping this Presidential election close.

Re: 2016 Presidential Election
It's not just racism. There are lots of people unhappy with the way the USA is being run without being overtly racist. There are the religious fascist who wish to force their religious beliefs on others. The GOP has been unfairly demonizing the democrats by making up a bunch of lies about them like they want to take your guns away (maybe they do if you're crazy). Trump lies repeatedly which creates some uncertainty in susceptible individuals and they think maybe he is right. But then they have the full nutjobs who eat up every bit of crap that comes from the orange turds mouth. Anyway it's not sop simple as to blame it all on racism but that is a significant portion of it.

@dakineguy:
Yeah, it's not only racism. There's another facet of conservatism that I don't care for: Mean-spiritedness. The irony is that I don't think Trump is a true conservative; if anything, he's a political chameleon. Yes, he is mean-spirited, but mostly in a racist way. He plays the conservative card only as a bone to throw at his Republican supporters. It's instructive to remember that he was once a Democrat. I think he'll say whatever is politically expedient for him at the moment.

Re: 2016 Presidential Election
Yeah Trump is a malignant narcissist and everything he does is for himself. This is why he doesn't understand public service or why military personnel would risk their lives because what do they get from it? He is entirely transactional. He doesn't do anything unless he is expecting something in return. So whatever politics he adopts it is whatever seems to be most beneficial to him personally.

@shrek2: That Marsh family did an outstanding job of modifying "Dancing Queen", by ABBA. Huge hit in early-'77. I see them more as a modern-day version of the Cowsills ('67), as opposed to the von Trapp family.
