BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- LSU's left-footed punter from Down Under, Brad Wing, would like to think he'll one day be known more for punting than an infamous celebration penalty that took away his 52-yard touchdown run.

DALY: With Aussie Sav Rocca, Redskins’ punting is off on the right foot
By Dan Daly - The Washington Times
Wednesday, August 17, 2011
Football isn’t the most international of sports, not like baseball, basketball, hockey and the rest, but it seems to have developed a taste for, of all things, Australian punters. There’s Mat McBriar in Dallas and Ben Graham in Arizona — not to mention Chris Bryan, who’s vying for a job with the New York Jets after spending some time in Tampa last season.

The Washington Redskins even have an Aussie punter these days — free agent pickup Sav Rocca, late of the Philadelphia Eagles. Say this for Rocca: He knows how to boot the ball, any which way you like. At Wednesday’s workout, for instance, he took over the kicking duties when Graham Gano left unexpectedly because his wife went into labor. Sav’s one field goal try went right down the middle, and his kickoffs and on-side kicks were more than acceptable

Aussie Bryan tries to boot Jets' Conley

Australian punter Chris Bryan has crossed the globe, family in tow, for an NFL shot
Updated: August 11, 2011, 6:44 PM ET
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There isn't much stability for some players in the NFL, as Australian punter Chris Bryan learned last season playing from Green Bay to Tampa.

He arrived back in the United States with his family this offseason. Touching down in Las Vegas with his two toddlers wide awake and jet-lagged, Bryan and his wife, Lauren, popped the kids in the stroller and toured the city's restaurants and bright lights at midnight. It was just another taste of Americana in what has become an adventure, coming from Australian rules football with its booming kicks, to honing those skills with the fickle accuracy demanded by the NFL.

Mat McBriar knocks off rust
June, 4, 2012 11:33 AM CT
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Mat McBriar is punting again.

McBriar, a free agent, had surgery in February to remove a cyst below his left knee that ultimately led to the Cowboys placing him on injured reserve last season. In the last month he has noticed the nerves re-firing, which has allowed him to move his foot.
.
.
.
When healthy, McBriar is one of the NFL’s best punters and can alter field position either with his strong leg or his flip-flop punts. From 2007-10 his net average went up every year, topping out at 41.7 yards in 2010, which earned him his second Pro Bowl bid.

Yes, these are guys everywhere. In a 5km radius of where I am sitting right now there are probably 20 guys who have the ability to be decent punters with some coaching and refinement; them being willing and able to qualify is another thing, to say nothing of them giving up professional football here for amateur football in another country.

The coaching staff have some hard decisions to make; I do not envy the position they are in.
