You could go to these places if UH covered the spread with tip money.

cabanalane wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:55 am That's right. There were plenty to do in Hawaii (Oahu) back in the old days where the 35-40K showed up. I'll admit first. Some of us was at Spats or Point After. Some of us was at Club Rose or Club Mignum (forget the spelling now). Still have time for UH Football. I don't know what young people do today.
Don't forget Cilly's, The Wave...The Rock and Roll Clinic across from Cilly's? I forget. My friend took me to a club where hula dancers from the audience would break out their moves while the band played Hawaiian songs somewhere in Waikiki...this was not a tourist venue. Henry Kapono's club certainly did not disappoint. Hawaii was rich in late night activity.

Just to go Off-Topic for a bit. Restaurant Row was a hot spot I remember, and then Aloha Tower Market Place, then it sort of all fizzled out, I think. I don't know as I left the Aina.

So where do kids in their early 20s go today? Let's say on Saturday, game day?

I believe the lack of management by the state legislators and school leadership plays a factor in a decline. It’s truly hard to imagine a worse run place. Between the corruption and lack of action and innovation, the football has been left behind. The team isn’t just under brutally underfunded, it also just a total lack of direction and vision. This school and program have potential but the people in charge are comically bad. One out of 100 examples is the current embarrassment of the Athletic Director situation. But nothing will change unfortunately

First: There is no long term vision and commitment to football and athletics by the University and the State. Stadium? No commitment and sense of urgency. What is the plan for UH football or any sports program? There isn't a plan. Therefore the community doesn't care or support the program. There is no reason to.

Second: It isn't college sports anymore. With NIL and the transfer portal it is semi-pro football. It is all about money. UH simply cannot be successful in this environment.

Third: Fans want a positive experience and you can't feel good about football if you are destined to lose. Tailgating with friends and family gone. The tailgating experience at other schools are fun and a major event. I remember (pre-swap meet) waiting for the parking lot gate to open around noon to tailgate with the game starting at 7 pm and tailgating after the game till about 11:30 pm. No traffic getting in and out even with 40,000 in attendance.

This is the first time since the 70s that I haven't attended a UH football game. it just isn't fun any more.

I don't believe anything the admthe hope of winning.inistrators and politicians say. It is all empty words. Why did June Jones leave? Lots of fans blame and point figures. JJ said it simply and factually " promises were made and never kept."

You can't have a winning team without a vision and commitment. And there is no no fun if you can't have fun and the hope of winning.

The same politicians act like they care about UH Football when they got rid of Todd Graham.

Where is the support? As some of you said, they couldn't care less if there's football in Hawaii or not.

If we don't go bowling in this year 4, the program interest could reach Norm Chow/FVA level

I don't think anyone here goes back to the days of Coach Thomas Kaulukukui.

So in the modern era, would we say Timmy Chang is 3rd worst HC in UH History? Kind of surprising to frame it that way. But kind of different as I think, at least for me, that good feeling is still here. It was absent during Chow or FVA era. It was just sad.

We can't argue who is GOAT HC. We can agree the worst is either Chow or FVA. But I wonder who is currently 3rd worst if we take out T Chang? (Because T Chang is not done yet). It's not fair to list Chris Naole as "3rd worst" because he was Interim. It would have to be between Wagner, Tomey, Mac, Rolo?

Todd Graham? But his W vs L wasn't bad.

UNLV just won their first bowl game in 24 years. Hawaii has won 6 bowl games in that time. Hawaii would be better off if we hadn't railroaded good coaches like Wagner, McMackin and Graham. To make matters worse, we invested way too many years in terrible replacement coaches like Chow and Von A. Chang has already won more games that both Chow and Von A. in three years time. Plus, the players hated Von A and Chow. I don't see any evidence of that now. While coming up just short the last couple of years was no fun, I really don't see a better alternative. June Jones was with us for 9 years after the Von A disaster.

That's an interesting name in recent history. I had to google that name. There were two prominent names that came up in the search. One, a successful judge and the other, someone who is in Hawaii's history books for his successes in UH football. Appears he was 5'4, ran a 103 yard kickoff return for a touchdown against UCLA and had a successful run as UH coach. He had to have fans hoping back then.

When I made the post, I was going to use Larry Price, but figure some of you guys may still remember him as I learned about his Hula-T offense on this forum, and his starting QB was this guy who became a dentist - and pass away a few years ago. One can argue Larry Price could be #3 as worst in UH History - don't know. RIP. Love Perry & Price, used to listen every day.

So I had to go a bit further. Didn't know TK was only 5'4."

UH may never get a JJ. And UH certainly don't want Chow or FVA. But everyone in the "middle" is so similar that we can debate, agree, and disagree, and be ok with it.
