About the 2024 season
About the 2024 season
Hawaii football has been playing with a hand tied this year. To begin with, Hawaii had to play a tough schedule. We played them respectably. Both UNLV and Boise finished in the top 25 of the CFP rankings. Boise finished in the top tier, while Wazu and UCLA didn't place well in the end...they were still teams that paid UH to play them. The only blow-out of the year was at Utah St. We were at an away game and suffered poor field position and BS13 injury early in the game. Chang chose to pontoon the backup quarterbacks...and the rest has been recorded.
Then something extraordinary happened. Chang gave MA12 the green light.

Re: About the 2024 season
To pick one thing, I would say lack of Steven McBride. The lack of WR1 (or as WR2) made a difference. We can say "next man up." But I'm not sure UH was built like that. We can point to BS13's limitations, but having McBride out there would have made a difference.

Re: About the 2024 season
The good, improved DL and right choice for DC. Defense was improved this as season, which was really nice to see and helped Hawaii stay in a few games.
The bad, no Steven McBride really hurt and the challenges with the OL this season led to poor offensive play this year. Our poor QB BS13 was running for his life most of the season and I believe was the most hit QB in the NCAA. The OL needs to improve if we are going to get back to a bowl game.
I honestly believe if we had McBride at Wr and Josh Atkins at LT, we would have won 8 games this year. Josh really surprised me with his play at Ari St.

Uhmm...BS13 threw with too much heat. There was too much mustard on that dog. I'm not hating on the kid.

Re: About the 2024 season
I agree with some of that but I thought Schager held onto the ball too long. He seems to have to wait until the guy gets open before throwing. Either the playcalling changed for the last game or Alejado was just quicker. No sacks. Some pressure but no sacks.Maui Boy in Alaska wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 3:08 pm The good, improved DL and right choice for DC. Re: About the 2024 season
OL is not expected to pass block over 3.5 seconds without the help of the QB working up the pocket and not trying to slide outside the pocket. In addition, when you have 7 defense personal coming, one will be open with the RB taking #6. QB needs to get ball out quicker. #12 showed in that getting the ball quick does help his OL. no sacks in the last game.

Re: About the 2024 season
That's one thing BS13 never did, and wish maybe he would do more. Throw the ball away (when the play is just not there.) Seems like BS13 throws were either good, or end up very bad.
Last game MA12 threw some away. And got call for it some. I guess that's better than "buck-50", getting hit by 300lb guys.

Re: About the 2024 season
Let's stop with this "tough schedule" lies. Hawaii did NOT play strong teams and their strength of schedule was 116 out of 134 FBS teams. Only 4 of Hawaii's opponents this year had winning schedules. This was probably the easiest schedule under TC's tenure. Sure, we played UCLA, Boise St., and UNLV respectably, but guess what, they were all losses. All 3 of those games we had a chance and with a more capable HC, we may have won those games.SundayJam wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 12:06 am Hawaii football has been playing with a hand tied this year. I'm also not sure if Washington St. paid UH to play them, as there was a deal between the MW and Pac-12 to fill out their schedules. This was probably a mutual agreement and it wasn't a "body bag, pay day" game you are inferring it to be. We had a 3 game deal with UCLA, so yes, we got paid, but again, not of the "body bag, pay day" game variety like Oregon and Michigan games of the other 2 years. Plus, UCLA had a bad year at 5-7.
I wouldn't say Utah St. was our only blowout game. We lost to Sam Houston (who is a good team, just underrated because they recently moved up from FCS) 31-13 and Washington St. 42-10.
There was no way for UH to win at Utah St. once the back-ups came in, so the platooning was just salt in the wounds. MA was doing great, moving the ball, finding a rhythm, then all of a sudden gets pulled for JKS. I understand, Chang wanted to give both playing time, but seriously, that is NOT how you do it. Let one finish a drive then put in the other. As someone who played QB in college, I thought Chang of all people would understand that.
Let me end with, I am a UH fan, I bleed green, but I just don't see TC as head coach material. I will say he got LUCKY with MA's performance, and I think MA will save TC's job by leading us to a bowl game next season. I hope MA stays his 3-4 years at UH as Hawaii fans haven't been this excited for football in a LONG time! Not saying TC will never be HC material, but he just needed to be guided into this position, not thrust into it because Dave Matlin's ego was too big to hire JJ with a fair contract. I hope TC will grow into a successful HC, but his time is just not now.

Trav...we're good. I know you bleed green and I understand you in regard to Timmy. However, Chang did direct the Bishop Gorman pipeline to Hawaii. He also says 'uhm' way too much whenever he speaks about the program. Can someone at UH please coach him how to speak in public? He should have put MA12 in much sooner....but I guess he wanted more years out of the player...and maybe expected BS13 would...evolve? He's an inexperienced first time head coach with local ties. He hasn't underperformed. Shoot, June Jones posted losing seasons of 3-9 and 5-7. Nick Rolovich had a 3-9 season.travo66 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 9:09 pmThere was no way for UH to win at Utah St. once the back-ups came in, so the platooning was just salt in the wounds. June Jones' last successful coaching years were at Hawaii. I wish we could afford Bill Belichick. We can't.

Most definitely!BigWave96744 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 7:18 amI don't think this is true. The pipeline opens and closes with Chris Brown.
Now that Coach CB is 3 years removed from his time at Bishop Gorman (and now entering his 4th year back with UH), that pipeline from BG is more likely to start closing.

Re: About the 2024 season
I loved TC as a player and wanted him to succeed like I wanted all prior coaches to. But my loyalty is to the university not one man.
For the 2024 season I question:
- TC not being more involved in the public to promote the program (before and during the season). Cannot hide from the media after loses, have media answer question for you, move call the coach to the SSC, away from the public after the season went bad.
- the recruiting of too many HS players over seeking guys who could have come in and filled pukas immediately
- playing BS13 too much, especially when he showed signs of struggle. It was like TC was padding his stats so he could throw for over 10,000 yards and surpass Moniz at #3
‐ play calling and use of timeouts
- Not utilizing key players to their full potential especially Hines and Crowdus.
- Rotating MA and JSK in the Utah St game
- Why so many have departed, especially those not going to get any more NIL money than if they stayed. What happened to the Braddahhood, Ride or Die, TC is building a culture?
I also feel as a D1 Head Coach, TC is too much of a players coach, wanting to give many players PT instead of keeping the best 11 on the field.
If the Angelos thing didn't happen, I felt TC should have been released after lost 7 and Thurman ascended to interim HC.
Next season, hire a seasoned OC and go Bowling!

Re: About the 2024 season
I'm not sold on this "pipeline" recruiting. Yes, there are connections and relationships, but in the "modern" world everyone have access to information and you can make connections on your own. If you are good (player) the schools will find you.
Let's say there is a relationship, for example. C. Brown know a good BG guy. He received 5 offers. UCLA, Florida, Texas Tech, Fresno State, and Hawaii. If C. Brown is who he is, he will tell him to chose the best (winningest, successful, etc) program. C. Brown should not (and I don't think he would lie) to the kid to say... come to University of Hawaii. Because of his relationship, he would advise the truth, and not be a used car salesman.
If the kid only received D2 offers and is a beast at BG. He was planning to go to NAU (Northern Arizona University), C. Brown can make a legit case for the kid and the parents to come play for Hawaii - because it's better for their son. C. Brown would be tell the truth and really be looking out of the kid.

Perhaps the platooning was an audition seeing both play in game time situations.SundayJam wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 12:06 am Hawaii football has been playing with a hand tied this year.
