1. @GentalmanoftheLou: AGREE. This makes the whole state look bad in my opinion. Now, even our local high schools aren't for local kids who put in the time, effort with their team to go out and play. What the heck is this nonsense? Weak move. Win with the kids you have, or don't. Winning isn't everything. Winning won't make you a 6'7" 320 lb. national recruit either, kiddos. Thats genetics.

2. ILH/OIA Transfer Rules also need to be considered. We need to have one standard in the state.
A. [ILH TO OIA] Campbell's current QB superstar left STL where he was the Varsity 2 team QB and immediately played next year as Campbell's Varsity QB starter
B. [OIA to ILH] STL current QB starter played on Kahuku's JV and then transferred to STL BUT HE HAD TO sit out a year at STL. Why??????? Our state looks bad. Why on earth would you limit options for JV kids on the one hand, (like for the current STL QB), but on the other hand why not have the same transfer rules across the state????? Wake up folks.

The transfer rules in OIA are fascinating to me. I've never heard of kids just moving schools mid season like this...or even all the summer changes that happen. Every other place we've lived has had rules more along the lines of ILH transfer rules, which makes a whole lot more sense and I definitely prefer.

It seems apparent that the OIA wants any advantage over the ILH, that it can get. They want to play their transfers right away. Gives the OIA a leg up in States.

So many people are talking kids transferring during the season, but remember Jeremiah Masoli? He only spent a month and a half playing for St. Louis 19 years ago.

Obviously, these transfers are a result of a loophole in the rules. I don't think the HHSAA or any league would want transfers to come in late in a season. But, there is probably no printed rule saying they can't. I believe there are rules that prevent transfers within Hawaii to be done before a certain date. The HHSAA will have to step up to the plate in the off-season and discuss enforcement of these mainland transfers. I only say this because I honestly feel it's bad for Hawaii high school football. Imagine how these kids that were starting all year feel after being replaced because a better player decides to transfer in for playoffs? There has to be some turmoil within the teams that receive these late transfers even though they are making it seem like everyone is all cool with it.

For the future, we also want to avoid mainland players that are having a bad season or get eliminated from playoff contention to decide that the want to move to Hawaii to get extra games in. What if a team suddenly received 20 mainland transfers? What if a team that barely made it into the playoffs, for example Waianae, received 10 transfers that totally changed the complexion of their team? They went from a mediocre team to a sudden all star team and ran through the OIA playoffs blowing teams out that they lost to all season? I think a scenario like that would kill the feel for what high school athletics in Hawaii is all about.

@University Ave: All that you said is true, but might there not be some alumni who might say, "I don't care where the transfers are from, and I don't care when they arrived, as long as they help my alma mater win games"?

@gopunahou - Good call re: Masoli, a kid from Nor Cal. Masoli had been kicked out of a big Northern California program, SERRA, for alleged criminal activity and found his way to STL in his Senior year. He did well, went JUCO, then from JUCO to Oregon. Was also kicked off the team at Oregon. My point: Did STL need to bring in Masoli, or need to be linked to Masoli? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for second chances. And I hope Masoli is thriving and living well. But what I am saying is I not sure STL would do that over again.

THE KIDS WHO BEEN ON THE TEAM
Think about the kids already on these teams when all of a sudden, some kids who WAS PLAYNG FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL IN THE SAME FOOTBALL SEASON comes in and gets to play in state playoffs? Talk about the ultimate sellout move from coaching and parents. What have we come to in hs sports? Can't wait to see where the Kahuku QB room ends up next year, for example.

I also agree this State has a serious issue on this topic - it's a new form of tourism. Hey kids on the mainland, if your season is over or not going well (wherever you are from), bring some big OL over to Hawaii to play in the HHSAA state playoffs. What a joke. Like I said before, now it's like even our local hs sports teams aren't local. Win with the kids you started with, or don't coaches. No love for this. Shame on all of us for doing that to kids. Recruiting is mostly about physical tools/potential and this won't help your kid either.

@RealTalk: Just wanted to respond to your last two paragraphs. You're right; it's almost as if schools and coaches are prostituting their football programs to players transferring-in. However, I have a sense that some alumni might not care; they want to see their alma mater win. "If the kid's a great player, suit him up and let him roar. I want my alma mater to win." I get that that might not always send the right message to the kids, but then again, guys might keep thinking/saying, "I don't care; whatever it takes to help my alma mater win!" That's my hunch. I heard a saying years ago: "Winning isn't everything, but it's way the hell ahead of whatever's second". Guys want the natural high of seeing their alma mater win.

Also agree with RealTalk. The kids from the neighborhood should have a spot on the team. Tavui and Iosepa gets to start as first time seniors @ Mililani. Tapeni, Robinson numerous others. Last year seniors first time Seniors Mahuka, Tysic Puni, Kanoa Ferreira all started. It's like a cartel high school draft with one school takes the all stars from the central district to make their super team. Do you think the Matsuda or Kaneshiros of Mililani neighborhood can walk on? It's their high school. Look at Waipahu. From State Champ to bottom because seniors left. They have a similar mix as Kalihi. Even for Kapolei. Biggest district with large Dept.of Hawaiian Homes and kids. Yet Hernandez let top players slip away. I mean he has had tremendous talent over the years (22) but zero OIA championships.

@Markeke: Yes, I see your point. But, as an old fart, I guess I'm looking at it the way I suspect alumni might see it. I'm not sure that I can see things through the eyes of Kapolei alumni, as that's the newest public high school on the island. Their oldest alumni are only in their late-30s, while I'm in my mid-60s. Speaking just for myself, I'm under the suspicion that all a school's alumni care about, is their alma mater winning games. I'm really not too sure they're overly concerned about the fairness of players who live in that school's enrollment district, being displaced by more-talented outsiders. Like they say, winning is the name of the game. I mean, when an alumnus picks up the paper, he doesn't want to read about his alma mater having lost a game. I think he'd be like, put the most talented players in; I don't care where they're originally from. They're wearing the right unis. It's too much of a bummer, reading about the old school losing.
