Valley Center, CA-@ Lahainaluna

Serious backstory in this game.Lahaina was razed to the ground by wildfire in 2023. Valley Center HC Bill Dunckel reacted with empathy. The town of Valley Center had been partially destroyed by the Witch Creek wildfire in 2017. In 2020,a16,000 acre wild fire burned in Valley Center and the high school was used as an evacuation center.

Coach Dunckel thought it could be a good bonding experience if these two schools, whose communities had suffered so much from wildfires, could play each other.

And so here we are.Not making any predictions here because this game doesn’t seem to be about a win or a loss. It’s more about two communities coming together who faced a common threat.

I think they got each other,so to speak.

Leilehua @ Central Catholic,Portland OR.

The Ram offense is headlined by three-stars Zac Stascausky OT 6-6 275, Landen Kelsey WR 6-4 180, RB Killian Sombe 5-10 190, and Andreas Nicolaidis TE 6-3 235. CC graduated a three year starter at QB and has three candidates to be the new QB. HC Charlie Landgraf says he feels good about all three but will have to decide on one before this weekend.

The defense features three-star LB Donnie Vercher 6-1.5 210. Coach Landgraf admits the defense has a few holes to fill ,but he is optimistic and points to overall team speed in his defenders.

CC went 9-3 last year. The Rams have won five of the last ten Oregon 6A state titles.

Leilehua seems to be stronger on defense although they give up more passing yards than rush yards, which would seem to play into CC’s favor with four of their top receivers returning from last year. Of course,I still wonder if their new QB will be able to take advantage. We’ll see.

It will be a noon kickoff at Central Catholics home field I’m expecting a tough battle for the Mules.

Kailua-Coronado,NV @Liberty in the Polynesian Classic.

Surfriders go to the Las Vegas metro to take on Coronado. The Cougars feature three-stars JJ Buchanan ATH 6-4 200, and
Aiden Krause QB 6-3 180. Coronado is one of the top teams in the state per Nevadasportsnet. The NIAA is proposing to create a Class 5A-I of seven teams, including Bishop Gorman, and Coronado would be one of those teams. It’s the Nevada name for Hawaii’s Open Division.

Kailua edges out Coronado 3-2 in the number of starred recruits with three-star linemen Esaiah Wong,Packs Ahovelo, and Benjamin Honebein. Not sure about the Kailua O though. They average over 300 yards of offense but only average seven points a game.

I think the Dub-meter tilts Coronado.

Mililani @ Liberty,NV

The Patriots feature three-stars Sean Craig S 6-3 180, Skyler Jackson ATH 6-1 205, Zjohnel Wheaton OT 6-5 295, Ryan Kiwanuka CB 6-0 185, and Eliah Logo DL6-1 281.

Mililani has eleven three-stars to Liberty’s five. However, QB Kini McMillan is sidelined by an injury. Liberty is also breaking in a new QB starter, so I view the QB situation as a wash. The Trojans appear to have better depth than Liberty.

The Dub-meter tilts to Mililani in this game.

Mililani @Los Alamitos

The Griffins feature 3-stars Alonzo Esparza QB 6-0 190, Lenny Ibarra RB 5-9 180, and Arion Lang ATH 5-11 170. Los Al is 2-0 coming into this game. MaxPreps ranks them as No.15 in California and No.11 in the CIF Southern Section. The Griffins have won their last seven home games.

Mililani has won their last seven road games including Liberty,NV on the Patriots home field last weekend. The Trojans have more FBS recruits and better depth I think.

The Dub-meter tilts toward Mililani.

One interesting tidbit about MD’s coach is that he’s already coached against Kahuku once. He was the coach of the Long Beach Poly team that clobbered Kahuku the same year that St. Louis took on De La Salle.

Good thing it's at Kahuku. I wonder when will Gorman play here. Kahuku traveled twice to the desert.
