Not sure if she was at 190, but with Esera out with an injury at the time, that was very likely. With Esera back at 190, that may very well be why she’s down to 170. 🤔
Asami won officials at 190. Not sure if she’s moving weight classes because of Esera. But Esera did look really good at OIA’s. On the offensive and made short work of the match. Didn’t see any signs of her shoulder hindering her.

Chargualaf was in control of the OIA title match, all the way. But the score was 4-1. May have factored into her seedings.
Just saw the 120# boys bracket. OIA West and OIA Champion Kato being seeded 6th is another head scratcher. He did miss a chunk of the season from a bad knee injury and lost to Corpuz and Lum when he came back, but looked sharp when he beat them in the semis and title match respectively at the OIA Championship. I was expecting him to be the 4th seed behind Del Rosario, Kusumoto, and Lau. 🤔
I'm guessing Dudoit outseeds Kato because he was a returning state placer (6th at 120 last year). Hao was 4th at officials and beat Quincy Corpuz (and never lost to him) so I'm guessing that would make him outseed Kato based on common opponents. Just my guess though.

The powers that be ain’t got no love for the OIA, I guess…
Kato at 4 seems right. 5 at the lowest because of the 2 strong ILH kids. 6 is a head scratcher.
1-4 seeds are state placer and champs I believe. 5 idk him but he might have beaten someone that beat kato. That would give him criteria over kato. Or maybe it was one of those coin flips?
The 4 and 5 are legit. Dudoit(4th seed) has only lost to Diesel and got 3rd at officials. Hao(5th seed) has only lost to Kusumoto and Dudoit(2-1)
Hao has also beaten Corpuz and got 4th at officials. Kato is good and may well prove it this weekend, but I think he's in the right spot(comeback player of the year or not).

Jona Dudoit is a legit player without a doubt. I don’t know much about Hao, but Kato beat Corpuz by fall at the Crossover before he got hurt, lost to him when he came back from the injury (definitely wasn’t at full strength), then beat him in the semis at the OIA Championship. Just never thought I’d see the OIA champion seeded 6th.

Yeah OIA champ as the 6th seed is definitely a first.

Yeah OIA champ as the 6th seed is definitely a first.
But it's a first for a good reason. They're finally seeding the top 8 instead of just placing the 5 champs in the top 5. It might not "feel" right, but I think it shows progress. There are some weights where the OIA got the top 3 seeds. I'm at other leagues are way more pissed about the change

I’m sure KSH and KSK holding 2/4 votes had a lot to do with it, not to mention Kaua’i not being present to cast the tie-breaker vote. There are speculations of coin flipping and names being drawn from hats amongst the comments, so Kaua’i’s no-vote proved to be huge.

I can’t think of a scenario if any of the 3 OIA guys are OIA champs and gets the 5 seed here.

The girls 125# bracket is a mess too. A girl (I’ll leave unnamed because it’s not her fault) that took a beating at OIAs, didn’t even place, still got a first round bye. Leleihua’s OIA West champion and OIA runner up didn’t get a bye. 🙄

Yeah it seems kinda dumb to revamp the seeding process (in a good way) and then randomly draw in everyone else. That allows league runner ups in the fishtail and then right into league champions in the round of 16. That needs to be fixed for future seasons.

I'm just glad it's moving in the right direction. The non top eight were actually preseeded, but the leagues wanted no qualifier round with same league matchups, so they had to be shuffled to do that. Plus requiring the 5 champs to be in the top eight makes it hard. I think when seeding it needs to focus on either honoring the champs and true seeding or separating the leagues. I don't think doing both is a good use of time and is pretty convoluted .

Looks like I have to change 2 finalists from my earlier picks.
165 - Woolsey over Hasegawa
215 - Stephen over Mata'afa
I'll stick with the rest. I'll post my girls picks tonight

That’s messed up. Last years state tournament had only one number 1 seed that lost on the first day. That Leilehua girl was the one that beat her. Hopefully, she does it again this year.

In the grand scheme of things, you can’t underestimate low or even unseeded “fishtail” wrestlers. The 116# girls Champion at FreakShow 2023 for example, was an unseeded unknown from Michigan. She allowed a total of four points the entire tournament.

The Freakshow this past year had a lot of elite wrestlers compared to the past year. The theory was that elite wrestlers wanted a tune up before the super 32 tournament. Cecilia Williams at 116 may be the best wrestler in the nation. But unranked according to Rocky Mountain wrestling. Anaya Falcon was at 109. Number 2 in the nation. Also unranked/unseeded. Most brackets were 64 man. 101,109,123 were 128 man brackets. Our state tournament is 16. With 4 play ins.
Notable Hawaiians that I know of in that tournament.
Daoang DNP 101.
Dudoit DNP 109.
Fong 6th 109.
Hotema DNP 116
Nishida DNP 116
Uyemura 3rd 136
Dudoit and Fong would meet if they both won in round of 16. Fong won. Dudoit got pinned by Serratos. Fong then pinned Serratos in one minute.
Hotema and Nishida met up in the consolation round with Hotema edging Nishida 3-2.
