Re: Coaches Sapolu and Yoro Leaving
Bad timing for UH (since currently mid-way through Spring Ball) to replace OL coach.....since new OL GA just started 3 weeks ago & was only beginning to learn the RnS offense himself. With John Estes recently hired as OL coach at San Jose State, guessing that Dennis McKnight (who previously coached under JJ with Dan Morrison at both UH & SMU) might be most viable RnS OL coach candidate (since he was previously involved last off-season to assist Sapolu to learn the RnS blocking schemes).
Given the processing time (2 week minimum) associated with soliciting then approving new UH’s hires, UH might not have a new OL coach in place for the rest of Spring Ball practices.

Hope they take a week or two off from spring practice and hire a new OL coach. McKnight or Suan temporarily or reach out to Estes. I know he just got hired, but you never know until you ask.kapakahi wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 11:11 am Bad timing for UH (since currently mid-way through Spring Ball) to replace OL coach.....since new OL GA just started 3 weeks ago & was only beginning to learn the RnS offense himself. The musical chairs in coaching is crazy. Good luck to them. Gotta strike while the iron is hot whenever the opportunity for advancement financially and/or prestige arises. It’s tough for a family man to move around, but it’s the nature of the profession. There will be interest in those openings by veteran coaches who seek stability or just want to work on this staff or up and comers. We’re okay as long as we have buy-in from the student-athletes on what TC is doing.

Could be the time to send an offer to Brian Smith in Athens, OH to come back to the islands and be Co-Offensive Coordinator and OL Coach?

Re: Coaches Sapolu and Yoro Leaving
Might be hard to get a coach who currently has a stable D1 job, to quit and work under a coach with only 1 year remaining on his contract.
But there are guys around who are unemployed or at a lower division school.
Some names comes up
Oline coach:
- Chris Naeole, often seen on the sidelines before home games last season
- Dennis McKnight (XFL Sea Dragons team folded)
- Mark Weber (currently at Idaho St)
- Rod York (Mililani recently hired Vavae Tata as an Assistant HC, maybe to take over York?)
Safeties coach:
Dennis Thurman should have someone in mind, otherwise maybe Rich Miano or Kim McCloud?
Wouldn't mind seeing Phil Austin but might be a risk for him to leave his Fullerton gig

I think give Brian Smith a call. Not sure he would take it since it could be a 1 year job. Estes won’t take a lateral move with the uncertainty after this season. I would say no to McKnight.

TC has 2 more years on his contract. He has a 4 year contract with an additional year extension if the team went to a bowl game in the first two years.

I meant that TC is already in his third year so has one year left on his contract.uhwarriors wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 12:31 pm TC has 2 more years on his contract. He has a 4 year contract with an additional year extension if the team went to a bowl game in the first two years.

His contact only says he would get an extension if he was bowl eligible in his first 2 years, which he didn't. Though there is no mention of an extension if he were bowl eligible in year 3, I would think AD Angelo's would extend him a year.
Unlike what some people think he should get 2-3 more years to develop players and coaches, if he doesn't become bowl eligible in his 3rd year, his 4th year he would be a lame duck coach and he probably be bought out.
Would a D1 assistant coach with a secured job be willing to leave that for a risk of not being around next year? Probably not

Re: Coaches Sapolu and Yoro Leaving
Well...it means Yoro and Sapolu were good hires. Someone else wanted them. UH and Chang cleaned house. I'm sure they didn't want to say goodbye to these two, but I guess it ends up a clean sweep. Best wishes to Yoro and Sapolu. At least, for a change, we have the same head coach.

Re: Coaches Sapolu and Yoro Leaving
We can look at it some someone wanted them and made them a better offer. Or they didn't feel the love with the program. We all criticized the OL and defense for their performance last season. And many of the losses were where the opponent score 30, 40, and one 50 points. Finger points back to the coach.

Re: Coaches Sapolu and Yoro Leaving
If Sapolu is an Offensive Analyst or similar role, he probably took a paycut as an average NFL Analyst make between 80k-100K.
