gopunahou wrote: Sun Nov 20, 2022 8:43 pm Interesting that the Open championship game is on the same night as what might be one of the biggest HS FB games in recent memory—Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco in a 1 vs. 2 matchup. I’d love for Mater Dei and Punahou to both win but I’ll take a split either way. I need a double whammy as much as I need a kidney stone.
It's also interesting that the Open final is on Friday, and the D1 and D2 finals are on Saturday. I guess they couldn't fit all 3 games on the same day, but I wonder how attendance will be for Saturday's games. Especially since 3 out of the 4 teams playing on Saturday are from the neighbor islands, Waipahu is the lone Oahu team.
The only explanation I’ve got for that is that the lesser games are on Saturday because the HHSAA does not wish to have the Open game overshadow UH’s road game. Since Thanksgiving weekend is coming up, I wonder why they couldn’t do a triple header, with the Open title game serving as the nightcap.

One thing that makes me feel good about the Open title game is that a couple of trends favor Punahou. A team with two losses or more hasn’t won a high-level state championship since 2007 Leilehua. Also, this’ll be the fourth championship game matchup between Punahou and Kahuku. There was also one team that entered with two losses or more with the other having lost only once or entering undefeated. The team with one loss or less always won. This time, Punahou is the team that enters with only loss while Kahuku enters having lost twice.

Of course, 1985 Pac-Five is the last team to beat a team in a high-level championship game/Prep Bowl that defeated it earlier in the same season.
But I don't think you can consider Kahuku's 2 losses in the same context since they were against mainland teams, not Hawaii teams. And also against nationally ranked mainland teams. They are still undefeated against Hawaii teams. Leilehua's losses in their 2007 title run were all against local teams.

I dont think HHSAA want to schedule all three championships on the same day same venue again. Remember that 2017 fiasco where the St.Louis / Kahuku game started at 11pm? Game finished at 1:30 am. The 4 overtime Lahainaluna game prior and the fact that all games had passing offenses. Also the venue at high schools now may not be big enough for parking, fans, etc. I'm sure Waipahu is going to bring the house on Sat. And Kahuku on Friday. Would have like the Open to be on Saturday.

Yup, that was a fiasco; all thrown off because of the crazy overtime with the 2 earlier games. But those two games were fun to watch.

I'm pretty sure 94block will show up.

Never have to worry about Big Red showing up! Too bad games can't be played at Aloha Stadium. Big Red vs Puns always draws the big crowds; crazy energy from both fan bases.

GO BIG RED!!! RRFL!!!

I know Kahuku played two of the country’s best teams, but two losses are two losses and trends are trends. If anything, there is one trend that favors Kahuku—the past six times the high-level Prep Bowls/state championship games have been rematches, the team that won the first meeting wound up winning the state championship game. In fact, Pac-Five’s 1985 Prep Bowl victory over Waianae is the only time since the Prep Bowl began that a team avenged an earlier loss in a high-level state championship game. That’s one trend that does not favor Punahou.

I spoke with OC16 and learned some bad news. The game ain’t streaming anywhere and is only on PPV. Talk about being behind the times.

Pay per view back in my high school day was you had to go to the school hosting the game you wanted to watch your school play. You paid the gate, got admitted and got to see the game, live and in person on the scene.

Just a wild guess, even in 2022, but I think the ticket price at the game venue is less than what Oceanic is going to charge you to watch a game on tv.

Gopunahou, at least Mater Dei/SJB 2 is live on Ballysports FREE at 4:30 Hi.time.

Pay per view is easy for us folks over 70. No driving at night, weather elements, no seat guarentee, dark walking areas, etc. And 100% of $49.99 goes to Hhsaa.

Hasn't the state championship games always been on PPV? Or at least been that way for a while? I remember going to the stadium for both of the Mililani-Punahou title games, and even then it wasn't televised.

Sometimes gotta try searching YouTube or internet just prior to the game. Good move by Spectrum to separate Open and Div 1 and 2. Punahou vs. Kahuku is a good Oahu draw. Not many townies want to drive to Mililani on Black Friday. The traffic is absolutely horrendous. I'm sure Mililani folks dont care for the extra cars. No Parking in Mililani Town Center on Black Friday. Cars will be towed.

Saturdays game has 3 outer island playing. Waimea,Kauai..Kekaulike, Maui...and Konawaena, Big Island. That should also pull in the revenue from those who could not fly over.

Either way, hope weather is good. I'm stuck in Az. so I'll be searching for a stream. Keep trying.

Happy Thanksgiving! Another great HS football season will be coming to an end this weekend. I’m definitely excited to watch all 3 championship games.
Open division: Kahuku v. Punahou. These are the 2 best teams in the state…by far, no one else is even close. And they have been ALL season. Last matchup Kahuku won but I’m looking forward to a great game on Friday. Kahuku D v. Punahou O…specifically Kahuku DL and LBs v. Punahou OL and RBs. This is the matchup that I can’t wait to watch. Tons of talent will be out on that field and some young talent at that. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see these 2 schools in the same game next season also. Go Buff n blue!! Go Big Red!!

I found it disappointing that it was on PPV because I thought it would stream. Today, streaming is the way to go. I also thought our 2013 title game was streaming, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I’ve got some pretty strong reasons for staying home and watching PPV. One of which is I’m also watching another game (happening in CA) that might not end before the Punahou-Kahuku game begins.

Regarding the game, the only time that Punahou should throw the deep ball is when that’s the only thing that Kahuku gives us. Not only will they make us pay for that, we’ve got so many better offensive plays we can run. The deep ball also cost us last week and nearly resulted in a turnover for us. On defense, it would behoove Punahou to use the same defense we did in the 2011 and 2012 championship games. It helps to know that this Kahuku team can indeed pass, something we didn’t seem to realize before the 2011 and 2012 title games, so I doubt that we’ll stack the box with 8 or even 9 guys.

To summarize—I can’t imagine this game going as badly as the 2012 championship game went for Punahou, which started that year going to Kahuku and playing them much closer at their place.

I guess bro Jaron told him not to pass in the flats also.
