Boise State football in need of offensive change after a devastating loss to UTEP
By Adam Bridges

Last season, the Boise State football team scored 54 points against the University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP). This season, the team suffered a 10-27 loss to UTEP after gaining only 53 yards in the first half.

The UTEP defense ranks No. 89 in scoring defense at 29 points allowed per game, and No. 77 in total defense at 372 yards allowed per game, according to B.J. Rains from Bronco Nation News.

Despite UTEP’s low defensive rankings, the Boise State offense only compiled 177 yards and reached the opponent’s side of the field three times. The team was also a 16.5-point favorite to win, according to DraftKings.

Offensive coordinator Tim Plough built his reputation on the back of a pass-happy, high-scoring offense at UC Davis, an FCS school. That didn’t translate into a win in the Broncos’ season opener this year, so Boise State switched to a much slower ball-control approach, hoping to rely on a dominant defense and stout rushing attack to win games.

After wins against overmatched New Mexico and UT Martin, Boise State’s offense couldn’t control anything Friday at UTEP.

The Broncos were held to less than 100 yards both on the ground and through the air, and managed just 177 yards offense in a 27-10 loss to the Miners — a team with a losing record that Vegas handicappers favored them to beat by 15 points.

The fact that my chances of winning the lottery are greater than Bryan Harsin’s chances of coaching at Auburn beyond this year are intensifying the hope of a coaching change at BSU. There are posts that urge BSU to bring Harsin back.

Tim Plough OUT as Boise State OC; Koetter in
By Drew Roberts@mybrainissmart
Sep 24, 2022, 1:39pm

In a move many saw as inevitable but doubted we’d see in such short order, Boise State second-year OC Tim Plough is officially OUT as Boise State offensive coordinator effective immediately—former Boise State HC and NFL HC/OC Dirk Koetter, who’d been serving as offensive analyst will take over in an interim capacity. Boise State’s offense under Plough just never found its rhythm and while the lion’s share fell of the criticism fell on him, the rest of the offensive unit contributed as well. Regardless, Boise State barely hit 30 PPG last year and couldn’t muster extra juice to put away a host of teams in ‘21...things have only been worse this year, with the Broncos near the worst in the COUNTRY in several offensive categories. Everything culminated with an embarrassing road loss last night at UTEP where the Broncos only had 177 yards of total offense.

Boise State QB Hank Bachmeier to transfer in wake of Broncos firing offensive coordinator, per reports By Shehan Jeyarajah 1 hr ago

Veteran Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier will enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports, two days after the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough. The turnover follows a 27-10 loss to UTEP in Week 4, which marked one of the worst performances for the program since it made the jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1996.

Bachmeier started 29 games over a four-year career, throwing for more than 6,600 yards and 41 touchdowns. He cleared the 3,000-yard passing mark as a junior while completing 63% of his passes. However, things went downhill in the first four games of the 2022 season, with Bachmeier completing a career-low 54% of his passes for fewer than 500 yards.

By transferring now, Bachmeier is eligible to credit the 2022 season as a redshirt year and will have two full years of eligibility remaining at his next stop; Bachmeier had not used his redshirt season, nor the NCAA-granted Covid exception.
