Congratulations to Chevan. And thank you to CPB for stepping up and supporting a local athlete who decided to stay home.

Hopefully there are more deals coming. My guess is that be there will be deals for Darius Muasau and Calvin Turner soon.

Good for Chevan and good for CPB. Let's get this rolling.

Star-Advertiser article:
https://www.staradvertiser.com/2021/07/ ... ment-deal/
Both sides declined to reveal details of the deal. But Brandt Farias, the bank’s senior vice president/marketing director, indicated the intent was for a long-term partnership. “Absolutely,” Farias said. “We’re starting modest with both sides. We want this to work for him, and we want it to work for ourselves. We intend on building the partnership if it makes sense for both of us.”

The announcement was made initially on Central Pacific’s social media platforms. “And we encouraged Chevan to do the same,” Farias said.

While the full marketing plan has not been announced, it appears certain the deal will use social media to help reach a younger demographic. “He’d be the most appropriate in the social space given who we’re trying to attract,” Farias said.

Spurred by a Supreme Court ruling last month, the NCAA changed a long-standing policy on amateurism and granted permission for student-athletes to benefit from NILs. The stipulation was NIL deals could not be used as an enticement in recruiting nor could schools make direct payments to players.

In states with no NIL laws, schools had to come up with their own policy. UH finalized its NIL guidelines on Thursday morning. Hours later, the CPB-Cordeiro deal, which had been in talks for a month, was announced.

“I’m thankful to Central Pacific Bank for giving me this opportunity,” Cordeiro said in a news release. “This is an exciting development for me and for college athletes in general. I look forward to learning more about how to balance the demands of being a student-athlete and what it takes to be successful in business.”

as a geographically-isolated place with no pro team, there are a LOT of NIL opportunities for UH athletes. No more marketing money for the Augie T's of the world and other C-list local "celebrities" - give that money to UH athletes! ASB, FHB, and BankOH all better step up their games...

Not sure how many opportunities will be available. After all, the businesses have a bottom line and they will pick celebrities that will enhance that bottom line. FHB already has Mariota so I would think it's unlikely they add another FB player.

According to Alabama's Saban, his QB to be has already received close to a million in NIL money and he hasn't started yet but was a backup to Mac Jones. This could get out of hand for some of the schools that get a lot of press. Saban said this to a group of coaches in Texas maybe to help recruiting.

I doubt this would work or the players and families would accept this, but if a player make over a certain amount of money from these NIL endorsements then I think they should give up their athletic scholarships so that scholarship can go to a non scholarship player.

as the economy recovers, we'll see more of this. I tried to get the marketing team at my job to do this, but I think they need to see other businesses do this first before they see the value in it. the Wahine vball team probably has the most potential for feel-good local marketing, in my opinion.

Really good that CPB and BOH have stepped up. Hopefully others will get on the bandwagon and support UH student athletes. I wouldn't be surprised if Hickam FCU and Hawaiian FCU got involved too.
