stranger_808 wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2020 2:44 pm I hope we don't go in that direction with Anea or Lamb. The Hawaii job isn't On-The-Job-Training. I don't want to see rookie mistakes in travel, time zone, and recruiting issues. We need a hire that already knows our players, and system, the transition needs to be seamless, otherwise it's a complete rebuild and 5 steps back for our program. IMO
We are on the job training. The only one that was a HC before coming to UH was June. All others from Tomey on, UH was their first HC job.
If we hire from within, its not On-The-Job-Training, that's the point of my post.
I guess I look at it differently.

Dave Holmes has the highest winning percentage for UH coaches and never had a losing season.

When it comes to comparing head coaches, I start with the Dick Tomey era as that was the start of being D1

Yeah would kind of be like Chow hire. But the after Von Ap we got June. After Chow we got Rolo. Seems to be a pattern. Maybe we are destined to suffer the next few years.
That's the pattern, EXCEPT, when they promoted from within.

Wagner and Mac. I would call them successful. So to break this cycle, UH would be wise to promote from the current assist coaches.

Agreed. This is a small bump in the road. Rolo was a “trap” coach and next year was going to be a “trap” season. Now that Rolo is gone we can take next year seriously and not look past it. Our playoff hopes are alive!

UCLA: Navy co-defensive coordinator Brian Norwood has joined the staff as defensive backs coach, according to Bruce Feldman.

Given the state of attendance I'd say "bag it". Sad to say.

that's what we do, right? we all have our preferences but once they hire someone we have no choice but to support the HC and hope for the best. There's no payoff for "being right" if you disagree with the choice and hold onto that feeling just to be able to say "told you so" if they don't succeed. whoever the next guy is, i'm right there with you.

attendance could have been better next year, coming off of 2 winning seasons in a row and a big bowl win. but with this coaching change? it is like we are starting over again.

it cannot be said enough how much damage Norm Chow did to the program. He took a team that was one season removed from 10 wins and run it into the ground, mostly because he was too old and too stubborn to work with what he had. i think everyone learned a valuable lesson from the way the hiring of Mack's replacement was done and I do not think Matlin will make the same mistake. But the damage has been done, and it will take sustained proof of improvement to get people to want to come back.

But heck, letting AFA hang 52 points on you at home doesn't help attendance, either. Did the WSU AD watch that game or what?

Brennan Carroll (son of Pete Carroll) is seemingly a candidate for the Hawaii HC job. He currently serves as the Offensive Scheme Specialist and Asst. OL Coach for the Seahawks. Worked prior as the recruiting coordinator for USC & Miami

Being that Hawai’i Can’t offer a big salary I am amazed at how many applicants have popped up and some of the names. But that is cool.

but this suspense is killing me I just want to know who it will be already.

We are a great stepping stone. Complete three winning seasons and a couple bowl games —— millions!

This is why I would scoff in the past when people would say "who would want to even coach here?" When complaining about the pay scale for the job. There is a limited number of head coaching positions out there and you just never know who might want the opportunity to live in Hawaii and make more than an average person makes, even if it is low for the HC market.
