Where to get the best fried chicken on Oahu

Post by ubercow »

Ok, in the chick-fil-a thread, posts started talking about zippy's fried chicken and I was wondering if I could crowdsource the best place to get fried chicken on island.

So zippy's makes a decent fried chicken but until they closed a month or so ago, my absolute favorite place to get fried chicken was shakey's pizza in waipahu. Second place would be the regular chicken at von's, and third would be a box of spicy at popeyes. Help me find a new #1, thanks in advance

I thought the fried chicken at Tanioka's was pretty good.

mm, their chicken is good, with big crunchy bits of skin, but usually cold when I go late mornings. similarly paalaa kai mini-mart's chicken is nice, but it's under heat lamp too long and a little dried out when I go afternoons. both of those would be way better if could get them fresh.

picked some up for the last tailgate, was nice. marinated with a hint of sweetness, kinda like the meat jun/katsu at youngs kalbee in aiea, but still nice and crunchy.

Zippy's is hard to beat. I've had southern fried chicken ( N.Carolina, S.Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana etc...) and Zippy's would give any southern fried chicken a run for their money. IMO

Outside of the fast-food brands, KFC, Popeyes, and even Church's (used to love Church's Fried Chicken by Schuman Carriage on Piikoi.), I've not tasted any fried chicken that really stand out (really better than Zippy's) on the mainland. Zippy's is still one of the better ones. Then again, the last time I had Zippy's was over 10+ years ago.

IMHO Zippy's fried chicken not as good as it used to be.

I've been to KJ's, had their fried chicken. I thought it was okay, not great. The customer service stunk. I called in an order, I go to pick it up and they didn't even start making it. No apologies or anything, I had to wait 25 minutes for something I called in 30 minutes prior. I never went back. Pilau buggas.

Ann's airport lunch wagon by the Delta parking lot. $5 plate lunch!
I do like Popeyes better than KFC.
Pancakes and Waffles makes a pretty good one too.
Does Sugois and Mitsuken count? Or are they in their own category?
Go Warriors! Go Na Wahine!

Supermarket fried chicken from the deli section.

I'm starting to like it, just because they probably fried their own fresh chicken that they can't sell. I won't say it's the best, but not too bad, when you factor in the price. To feed the family with KFC, it's like $40+, sometimes close to $50.

The supermarket fried chicken are like half that and sometime even less when on sale. Last time, I got 9 pieces for $7.99. Can't beat that. I think regular price is like $9.99 or was it $8.99.

Going to get some tonight.
