2018-19 Wrestling season
Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
Is the East getting better or the West getting worse? The traditional powers of the OIA has been Campbell on the boys and Pearl City on the girls.
I think there’s going to some interesting news coming out of the ILH and Maui too

@Chile: I thought Leilehua was pretty good on the boys, too? They're a West school.
Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
I think the wrestling is becoming more balanced. The east has been down for years(especially the numbers), but they have always had good wrestlers. Moanalua has been carrying the flag for them for quite a while due to them having the numbers to go with the quality wrestling. Teams like Kalaheo, Kailua, and Kalani have always had good ones, but now they are getting more numbers(relatively speaking) to go with the few good ones they had. The west is the west. Campbell, Leilehua, Waianae, and Kapolei are still the power in boys side although they are very young this year. Pearl CIty, Waianae, and Campbell are still the strength on the girls side. I think the numbers in the east are growing and the numbers in the west are slightly down. Also, teams like Nanakuli are growing yearly as well. Outer island wrestling is also getting better. It used to be they just had numbers, but the wrestling is getting better and better every year. This should be a good state tournament outside of the whole Kamehameha monster thing. They have the ability to place all 14 wrestlers which probably won't happen, but wouldn't be a stretch for what they are right now.

Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
@Chile: I don't know. Last year, Kamehameha Schools' boys and girls failed in their respective state title quests by very slim margins. The boys lost the title to Leilehua High by a very slim margin, and the girls lost the title to Lahainaluna High by a very slim margin. As long as the school(s) just behind the Warriors stay close, it could happen again, for the boys and the girls.

Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
Kamehameha boys look pretty stacked this year and could probably place at 13 of the 14 weight classes (I don't see their 106 placing). Even their girls look pretty tough especially through the middle of their line up (117-145). It will be a fun state tournament regardless.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 3:57 pm@Chile: I don't know. You are completely right, I am being too "Oahu-centric". Thing is I tried not to be. I kept trying to find ways to get more of the other islands involved, but it was difficult. They are really good and have been performing extremely well during the season and in previous seasons. A few that are definitely in the equation: 182-Bates(Lah), 195-Mynar(KSM), 138-Gilcoat(Lah... can't believe I left him off the list because he might be the favorite), 113-Spain(Wak),107-Saribay(Lah and beat Mahoe). Half of the girls were outer island, but it was tough with the boys. They will definitely prove me wrong. Also, Moanalua girls are definitely in the equation as are Lahainaluna. Baldwin and the Lunas should make a push in the boys as well, but it seems a tall mountain to climb.HS Football Fanatic wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 12:15 pm@wkrp: Perhaps I'm being too "Oahu-centric," but I'm surprised you don't have Moanalua as a possible winner for the girls. Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
@wkrp: Well, I'm admittedly Oahu-centric, too, being from Oahu. The irony is that the schools I don't like are on Oahu. As the saying goes, "Familiarity breeds comtempt." For that reason, when a neighbor-island school plays an Oahu school, 95% of the time I want the neighbor-island school to win. But, it depends on which neighbor-island school is playing. For example, I prefer Moanalua High to Baldwin High, so between those two schools, I'd prefer to see Moanalua High win. That's not because I dislike Baldwin High; I'm neutral enough towards neighbor-island schools. It's just that, for a number of reasons, I prefer Moanalua High to them. It's complicated. To be perfectly honest with you, I sometimes prefer one school to another for the silliest reasons. I mean, I know how I feel, but at the same time I realize that that feeling is silly.wkrp wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 1:30 pmYou are completely right, I am being too "Oahu-centric". Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
I think your choices for the individual state champions are pretty consistent with what I would pick as well. I think at 120, it could go to asunscion from Moanalua or Chun from Kaiser as well. Moanalua could possibly make a push for the team title, but a lot of things would have to go their way. One thing going their way already is that I hear Tapia (152) didn't make weight at ILH championships, and Chew (132) placed 5th meaning he didn't qualify for states. That evens up their entries to 12 a piece for those teams. Could end up being a closer tournament on the boys side than we all originally thought.wkrp wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:31 pm Any predictions now? Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
Weak might not be the right word for it. I think normal for ILH is what it was. Every single girl that entered the tournament(as long as they weren't a second wrestler for their school) qualified for state. That seems odd to say the least. Pretty sure they are the only league where that happened(I don't have the brackets for BIIF, so can't check them). KSK girls are going to have a huge advantage starting though, because they will have 12 top 4 seeded wrestlers.Chile wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 10:50 pmIt seems like the ILH tournament was weak. Re: 2018-19 Wrestling season
Yeah it's funny to me how last year was the first year the ILH was only allotted 3 spots to states, and all of a sudden ("coincidentally") fishtails are brought back so they can get their 4th guy back in. So like you said, every single girl from the ILH makes it in, and 4 out 5 (in the majority of weight classes) from the boys makes it in. I think the tournament is completely fine with 16 entrants. Call me old fashioned, but it seems like wrestlers should actually have to do something to qualify for the state tournament.wkrp wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 11:06 pmWeak might not be the right word for it.
