Re: Coronavirus
way too small a sample size to get any useful statistics within the US.
based on china's numbers that I saw a few days ago, if you're over 80, over 1 in 7 infected die (14.8%). 70-79, about 1 in 12 (8.0%). 60-69, about 1 in 28 (3.6%).
http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id ... a8db1a8f51
and based on regular US flu numbers, 65+ has an under 1% mortality rate
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2017-2018.htm
to adjust the numbers, china is a first-world country but probably doesn't have as good high-end medical as the US, which may bring that number down.
now if they could, china as a government would probably under-report their numbers, which may bring that number up.
is it more dangerous than the flu, probably. should your hoard up for end-times? probably not.

Re: Coronavirus
haha, u gotta go shop yourself. i probably going get some canned goods sometime this weekend, i'm pretty low at home.My3Cats wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 8:36 am I had my regular Costco list on the refrigerator for my once, every couple months trip to the big box. Didn't have much on it yet but Mrs Cats took it yesterday and asked me what was needed for COVID-19 preparation in case of having to self-quarantine. I just said non-perishables. There was nothing that she bought for $300+ that I would consider to be non-perishable for potential self-quarantine. She did buy toilet paper (we had plenty on-hand already), and a bunch of perishables. And she was not in the islands back when we had that initial dockworkers strike that started the toilet paper hoarding that we continue to see now. SMH. And she always scolds me for buying too much in bulk (canned goods). SMH2. And she bought a case of bottle water - like the tap and our pitcher filter won't do. SMH3.

Re: Coronavirus
lol, quoting myself. but writing this line reminded me of that guy they showed on the news that went into the ocean during the last hurricane warning and started yelling and splashing water at it.
did he get hit by the hurricane? no. but he definitely wasn't using good judgement and was lucky that the 1% chance of hit (or whatever it was) didn't happen haha.

Re: Coronavirus
I think China's numbers will be higher because they were overwhelmed and they don't have the best health care. On the other hand, they may be under reporting. But as you said, gotta use good judgement.ubercow wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 1:03 pmway too small a sample size to get any useful statistics within the US.

Over 3000 deaths worldwide, 2900 in China. I still don't trust the Chinese count.

What I hate most is going to the fitness center, being on the treadmill and having someone next to you coughing, coronavirus or not.

First confirmed case in Hawaii.

Hawaii has confirmed its first case of the coronavirus in a resident who traveled on a cruise ship in February and tested positive after returning to Oahu.
The resident was on the Grand Princess voyage from San Francisco to Mexico from Feb. 11 to 21 and flew back to Hawaii from Mexico, later became ill and tested positive for the virus Friday. The individual was treated at Kaiser Permanente, which has placed two staff members and a physician in home quarantine for the next 14 days as a precaution.
A Kaiser representative did not disclose which clinic location the patient visited.
Local health officials have so far not identified any close contacts of the patient, who they said is “doing fine” in home quarantine with mild to moderate symptoms. They did not reveal whether the individual lives with family.
“We don’t believe there has been any community spread (in Hawaii) at this time,” Gov. David Ige said Friday at an emergency news conference.
State authorities didn’t know which airline the individual flew on, but said the patient did not have symptoms at the time so there was “no risk” while traveling back to Oahu. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted it is possible for spread to occur before symptoms, though that is not the primary mode of transmission.

Re: Coronavirus
I wonder why MSN is trying to collect money which is about $30K from the public to fight the coronavirus when Congress has already allocated $8B to fight the disease.
I sort of knew that people would try to take advantage of the coronavirus situation with suits and the like. Here a couple is suing for $1M. Wonder how they came up with that figure. Also in the MSN article, see that MSN is still trying to collect $$$ for the fight against the coronavirus which is up to $33K.

With still 2 more weeks before UH Football Spring Ball is scheduled to start on March 27 (Friday), wouldn't be surprised to see some policy changes by then....possibly closing Spring Ball practices or even cancelling Spring Ball altogether....
