Why Does Premium Gas Cost So Much More Than Regular?

By Jeff Sabatini
June 23, 2016

Image
From the July 2016 issue

From 1995 through 2005, the national average price difference between regular and premium unleaded was
18 to 19 cents per gallon. Even when gas dropped below a dollar in 1999 or broke the three-dollar mark in 2005,
the premium for premium remained consistent. It ticked up some over the next few years, with the delta growing
to 25 cents by 2011. But since then, the price of high-test has been on a tear. The average upcharge reached
40 cents in 2015; this year it’s already grown to 47 cents.

Nils Bohlin was an engineer at Saab, designing airplane catapults for pilots, when Volvo hired him to work on cars. By the 1950s, Volvo had
already figured out laminated windshields, padded dashboards, and even standard lap belts in a time when there were hardly any regulations
mandating its use. At Saab, Bohlin had concentrated his effort on ejecting pilots, getting them out of danger, moving them as quickly as
possible. At Volvo, he would be doing exactly the opposite: keeping drivers in place.

These Excellent Animations Show Exactly How Turbochargers and Superchargers Work

Even if you're an engineer, you'll appreciate these visual explainers.

With forced induction quickly becoming the norm on today's cars, it's important to understand how it all works. Turbo- and superchargers
are fairly simple devices in principle, but a good visual is sometimes the best way to show how something functions. This website put
together by Australian tire seller Tyroola provides excellent visual explainers for how many different types of forced induction work.

So, what’s the difference between ‘4-wheel drive’ and ‘all-wheel drive?’

By Peter Braun
July 19, 2016

While "4-wheel drive" and "all-wheel drive" are related, they are actually different in how they work and the resulting driving experience. Here's how they differ,
so you can figure out which system is right for your needs.

Despite the increasing number of online resources and shifting dealer strategies, car shopping is still a bother. Add in all the new car
segments, vehicle features, and technology acronyms, and the process becomes truly daunting.

There’s a long list of confusing topics when finding the right car, but all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) seem to consistently
confound salespeople and car shoppers alike. Often, these terms are used interchangeably, but are they really the same? In the motoring world,
they actually refer to very different systems, which can produce radically different results. But let’s get to the point: how does 4WD or AWD
impact your daily driving life, and which badge belongs on your car?
