Re: NASA
This Week's SpaceX Launch Begins a New Era of Spaceflight
If we want to go to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, we've got to jump this hurdle first.

SPACEX
For the first time ever, SpaceX will launch a crewed mission to the International Space Station this Wednesday. If all goes
according to plan, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Douglas Hurley will take the helm of the company’s Crew Dragon
spacecraft and shepherd it into a new era of space exploration.
"I think we have pounded the issues associated with falcon and dragon more than any other mission we've had in our
history leading to here," SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said in a press conference earlier this month.
Yesterday, NASA and SpaceX wrapped up a final flight readiness review meeting, meant to pick apart each step of the
mission with a fine-toothed comb. NASA and SpaceX conducted a final static fire on Friday and Behnken and Hurley
donned their spacesuits for a final dress rehearsal on Saturday. Barring a weather delay—as of May 26, the weather
forecast stands at 60 percent "favorable"—the mission has been cleared for launch.

After standing down from launch on Wednesday, May 27, SpaceX is now targeting Saturday, May 30 for
Falcon 9’s launch of Crew Dragon’s second demonstration (Demo-2) mission from Launch Complex 39A
(LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test flight with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken
and Doug Hurley on board the Dragon spacecraft will return human spaceflight to the United States.
The instantaneous launch window opens at 3:22 p.m. EDT, or 19:22 UTC, with a backup instantaneous
launch opportunity available on Sunday, May 31 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, or 19:00 UTC. Tune in here to watch
the launch webcast. Coverage will begin about 4 hours before liftoff.
Demo-2 is the final major test for SpaceX’s human spaceflight system to be certified by NASA for
operational crew missions to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX is returning human
spaceflight to the United States with one of the safest, most advanced systems ever built, and NASA’s
Commercial Crew Program is a turning point for America’s future in space exploration that lays the
groundwork for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

While in orbit, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley captured stunning views of our
home planet Earth.
The duo made history May 30 when they launched from American soil in a commercially built and
operated American crew spacecraft to the International Space Station. Their mission and test flight
is helping NASA certify SpaceX’s crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts
to and from the orbiting laboratory.
