Agnes McKee has been warming up for a couple months now, grabbing a baseball in her right hand, propping herself up against her walker and tossing the ball underhand to a staff member from the San Diego-area retirement community she calls home.

Her big day will come Sunday, when McKee steps on the field at Petco Park and throws the first pitch at the San Diego Padres game. No matter how close she gets the ball to the plate or whether it's a strike, McKee certainly won't get any boos.

She's not 50 cent. She's 105 — as in years old.

Losing a parent at just six years of age is unimaginable. You may vaguely remember some of the wonderful memories from that brief time spent together, but the pain surely never goes away. I imagine you cling to those memories dearly, grasping hold of them and praying that over time you won't forget.

For one teenage YouTube commenter (00WARTHERAPY00) that scenario is real. And in the comments section of a piece about whether video games can be a spiritual experience, he told his touching story:

South Korean activists feel North Korea's pain and send balloons full of choco pies

July 31, 2014 @ 11:36 am

Image

Last time, we reported that North Korea had placed an unspoken ban on the chocolate, marshmallow cakey-goodness that is the Choco Pie. Now, South Korean activists have shown that they sympathize with North Korea's tragic loss, and have sent over a free Choco Pie supply in an uplifting fashion--by balloon mail!

Earlier in the week, anti-North Korean activists gathered in the city of Paju, which is located near the border of North Korea, and released 50 helium balloons carrying 10,000 Choco Pies! Although these activists normally send over balloons carrying anti-North Korean government leaflets, Choo Sun Hee, an organizer of the event, explained that they wanted to treat the "hungry North Koreans" to a beloved snack they were surely craving.

Can you imagine seeing Choco Pie floating down from the skies? Talk about a gift from the heavens.

2nd Annual Water Gun Festa in Korea is a Blast

August 4, 2014 @ 11:59 am

Last week, the 2nd Annual Water Gun Festa was held in Sinchon was held where participants cooled off from the heat by holding a giant water gun fight. And as the name suggests, it was all kinds of awesome.

Sinchon closed off its streets, making the neighborhood event-friendly. Admission to the festival was free, but participants had to bring their own water guns.

There was plenty to do during the festival aside from getting hosed down by strangers on the streets, as the event also included a waterslide, street dance performances, DJ performances, and after concerts.

This Pit Bull With A Cleft Palate Proved Doctors Wrong And Is Now Living The Good Life

The Huffington Post - By Arin Greenwood

Three veterinarians advised that Ruby the pit bull be put down.

The pup was born in December with a cleft lip and palate, meaning that those parts of her body didn't get fully developed in the womb. The lip is mostly a cosmetic issue, but the palate made it impossible to nurse.

At just 5 days old, she was already severely malnourished. A dog breeder surrendered the pup to the Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation in Salt Lake City.

"I have to admit that she looked pretty bad," Jennifer Clayton, director of the foundation, told The Huffington Post.

Clayton's own vet gave Ruby only a slightly better prognosis than the three who'd recommended euthanasia. The doctor, however, warned the effort and expense required to make things work would be great.

"But she said she'd help me try to save her if that's what I wanted to do," Clayton says. "As I sat there trying to make that terrible decision, Ruby started to suck on my finger and I knew that she wasn't ready to give up."

Grizzly bear photo is a prized trophy

A Canadian wildlife photographer attempting to get photos of a grizzly bear fishing for kokanee salmon in a river in the British Columbia Rocky Mountains got far more than he bargained for—in a good way—when the grizzly started toward him.

Jim Lawrence of Kaslo, B.C., set up his camera on a tripod in an opening in the bush, anticipating that the grizzly would make its way downriver so he could get a photo from across the river.

“I should know better than to guess what a bear is going to do,” Lawrence told GrindTV Outdoor in an email. “He crossed to my side and scrambled up the bank, at which point I dashed back to the truck for another camera [with a shorter lens].

Stray dog who raced 430 miles to a better home:

By WILLS ROBINSON FOR MAILONLINE
UPDATED: 06:16 EST, 24 November 2014

Image

Exhausted, covered in mud and desperately hungry, a team of Swedish athletes sat down for a meal as they prepared to take on a dangerous 20-mile trek through the Ecuadorian rainforest.

As they opened their canned meat, a tired Mikael Lindnord noticed a scruffy, miserable stray dog staring at him out of the corner of his eye.

Feeling sorry for him, he fed the dog a meatball and thought nothing of it, but as the team stood up to continue their race the animal started to follow them - and he didn't stop.
As the group of four navigated the final two stages of the 430-mile Adventure Racing World Championship, the dog befriended them and was eventually given the name Arthur.

Every grueling task the team face, Arthur would do the same. He swam alongside them while they kayaked down rivers, dragged himself up hills during hikes and pulled through knee-deep mud during treks.

Even when the team tried to get rid of their new member out of concerns for his safety - he refused to leave.

Nate Boyer – Green Beret, Texas Longhorn football player, NFL's most improbable prospect – had just finished fixing a sat-com radio in the rear of an M-ATV, light-armored, mine-resistant vehicle. Now he was scrambling to get back to the relative safety of its cabin.

This was July 2014. This was on a thin ribbon of road on the edge of Tagab, a small village in the Kapisa Province of Afghanistan.

This was war.

Seattle dog's rush hour ride: on the bus, by herself, weekly

SEATTLE -- Public transit in Seattle has gone to the dogs.

Commuters in Belltown report seeing a Black Labrador riding the bus alone in recent weeks. The 2-year old has been spotted roaming the aisles, hopping onto seats next to strangers, and even doing her part to clean the bus -- by licking her surroundings.

"All the bus drivers know her. She sits here just like a person does," said commuter Tiona Rainwater, as she rode the bus through downtown Monday. "She makes everybody happy. How could you not love this thing?"
