The Positives and Negatives From the UCLA game

This game hurt, mostly because there was so much hype going in.

The offensive line was horrendous. The grades from pff.com prove this point.

Run Blocking

lm Manning-63.7
Micah Vanterpool-54.3
Kohl Levao-59.5
Solo Vaipulu-52.1
Gene Pryor-45.1

Pass Blocking

lm Manning-73.5 (gave up 0 sacks, 4 hurries, 4 pressures)
Micah Vanterpool-68.7 (gave up 0 sacks, 2 hurries, 2 pressures)
Kohl Levao-77.5 (gave up 0 sacks, 0 hurries, 0 pressures)
Solo Vaipulu-54.4 (gave up 0 sacks, 1 hurries, 2 pressures)
Gene Pryor-56.0 (gave up 2 sacks,3 hurrries, 5 pressures)

On the opponents side UCLA's O-line allowed 1 sack, 1 hit, 1 hurry,
3 pressures with the LT, RT, RG, grading in the high 80's. The irony
is that it eventhough it looked like UH's d-linemen were steamrolled
that is not the case when you see the grades of UCLA's o-line
run blocking with the LT-54.4 and the rest of the o-line
grading in the low 60's. UCLA's top RB had 106 yards on 6 carries
and the remainder of the team had 138 yards on 37 carries for
only 3.7 yards a carry.

QB

Chevan Cordeiro-64.3

For the game CC was 25-47, 2 int, 5 passes dropped.

The times that CC was blitzed he completed 37%. When not blitzed
he completed nearly 70% of his passes. When he had a clean pocket
he was 53.3%. IMO the OC needs to counter play the blitzes with draws,
screens, misdirection, sweeps, end around ... but no. The o-line needs to
pick up the blitzes. The biggest irony here is that for the game
the passing selection was 22% play action and 78% no play action
with the QB completing 66% of his play action passes and 50%
of his no play ation passes. Clearly you can see what is working
except for the OC. All through the game I'm thinking do an inside draw
to a slot (it be a long run) but no.

12 of 14 pass completions were behind the LOS netting 31 yards. Ugh.
The positive was that CC was 3-6 of his deep passes (20+).

Some positives to note-

Defense forced UCLA into 5 punts.

Held Kyle Philips (WR) to 2 receptions, and Greg Dulcich (TE) to 1 reception.
These 2 are UCLA's biggest playmakers.

2 of Shipley's punt were 50+. He showed good leg on his 49 yard FG,
which may have been good from 55.

The new PK averaged 69.0 on kickoffs.

Levao (imo) did better than I expected. He was in on 63 plays and showed
good stamina, endurance in UH's up tempo offense and with the more reps
he gets he should get better.

Held UCLA's star QB to 10-20 passing and 15 yards on the ground.

10 new players saw action with 4 true freshmen getting into the game.

UCLA didn't try to run up the score. Can you imagine what the score
would have been if the top RB had 20 carries and #45 and #58 stayed
in the game (both grading in the 90's). UH's tackles were overwhelmed.

Negatives to note-

UCLA's top RB gains 89 yards on 3 TD's of his 6 carries and 106 yards in the game.

Right Tackle. That was his worse game in his career.

No running attack, no pass blocking, no offense play counters. It was like Graham2

taking the offense back into the Chow days. You would think that CT would get

a carry (but no). A screen pass, a quick pitch, a QB option, a wildcat (but no).
