Great pick! When thinking about Hawaii football, I always hear his dad's voice in my head.
Hope he will be calling UH football and other sports for a long time.

Happy a Leakey is back in the booth. Sorry but Robert was all over the place and jacked up names all the time.
Be humble and confident in yourself and all things you do.

He's one of the best out of Hawaii esp. with his other play by plays for VB and BB. I think he'll do the same for football.

I like the Kanoa and Rich team but I think Rich has to stop his comparisons of Khoury Bethley to Ronnie Lott. Ronnie Lott use to make a lot of his stops with hard hits using his helmet when it was legal. I respect Ronnie a lot and his intentions was never to hurt the player but just make a stop and he is a nice guy. I think Khoury's style matches with Troy Polamalu where he's Johnny on the spot a sure tackler.

I feel old. I used to struggle to get radio reception at upcountry Maui. I remember granddad Chuck used to do some play by play. Anybody remember Dave Holmes?

Re: Kanoa Leahey will be the TV play by play announcer
Dave Holmes was around when UH football wasn't as big as high school football back then. But, it turns out that Dave Holmes was the winningest coach meaning that he had the best win-loss record of any UH coach before he got fired. There was a big article about the QB, I think who's name was Ortiz in 1973 who took Hawaii to an almost undefeated season beating the likes of Washington only to lose their final game at University of Pacific located in Stockton where Ortiz was from. I think our QB was questioned for throwing the game and he turned on the linemen on the team especially the defensive line for gambling on the games locally. Eventually this QB committed suicide in the 1980s. I don't know if this had anything to do with Holmes departure as head coach but he seemed like he was somewhat instrumental in bringing UH into the limelight. I think he may also have been instrumental in bringing Golden Richards to UH who ran a 9.6 100 yard dash and ended with a career in the NFL with the Cowboys.
About three years ago, I received a bunch of articles via email from EXPN Honolulu(?) or from some other group that went into depth about the players of that era. Too bad I tossed those emails because they had an all-UH team which included players from the Dave Holmes era.

Same here, I sometimes can still hear Jim Leahey when it comes to UH Football.Maui Boy in Alaska wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 8:32 am Great pick! When thinking about Hawaii football, I always hear his dad's voice in my head.

I think Jim has more "excitement" in him voice. IMO, Kanoa is a bit too "professional" in a way. Or maybe there has not been too much excitement with UH Football since Kanoa has been in the business.

I used wait in the grandstand in the old Honolulu stadium so I could say hi to Chuck. He would tell me to study hard in school. I remember Holmes and the isolation pass. Watching that offensive tackle wipeout the cornerback was something to see. He’s one of my favorite coaches.

Big difference from today. At some pro games I see athletes greet young fans with "What's up Playa.."RedZone wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 2:38 pm
