Liking all the incoming DL commits (Baker, Jones, McKinney, and now Tonga Jr.), but now kinda wondering if UH is still actively recruiting or will even have a scholie available for 2021 Kapolei HS DT/DE Zhen Sotelo (who is still uncommitted and supposedly still deciding between UH and Nebraska)..... https://twitter.com/SoteloZhen/status/1344409855625363456 https://twitter.com/SoteloZhen/status/1344109894463459329

Sotelo won't be making his decision (between Nebraska & UH) until February.....

Nebraska the apparent leader for Kapolei DL Zhen Sotelo....with UH supposedly still under consideration....
Maybe he's not seriously considering UH

Now that 2021 Mililani HS LB Wynden Ho'ohuli is headed to Lincoln, Sotelo might also be leaning towards Nebraska over UH....but it appears that he might also be a back-up secondary recruit for Nebraska. If Nebraska decides to pull Sotelo's offer and UH has already filled its allotted DL commits, Sotelo could end up at one of the other MWC programs (San Diego State, UNLV, or Utah State) that made early offers.
https://247sports.com/recruitment/zhen- ... interests/
Sotelo, who’s down to NU and Hawaii, doesn’t appear to have the green light yet to sign with the Huskers. He said he’s going to have another Zoom call soon with Nebraska defensive line coach Tony Tuioti about his choices.
https://omaha.com/sports/huskers/recrui ... aa28c.html
If the Huskers want to pursue one more high school defensive lineman they could look towards Zhen Sotelo. The Hawaii native (6-4, 268) has been an under the radar target for most of this cycle.
.
https://hailvarsity.com/football-recrui ... checklist/

Worst-case scenario for Sotelo is IF the other schools who made early offers also don't have any available scholarships left.....then Sotelo could become one of those 2021 HS prospects who had multiple early offers but who didn't commit/sign during the December Early Signing Period and are now left without an available scholarship.

Since losing at least 2 OTs (with back-up OTs Hilborn & Moore in the transfer portal)....and senior OTs Gene Pryor and/or Joey Nu'uanu-Kuhi'iki potentially also not returning next season (both having already graduated), hopefully UH will sign at least 2 OTs in the Late Signing Period.

Since also losing at least 2 interior OL (Ta'aga to graduation & Wa'a to transfer portal)....and senior OGs Michael Eletise, Kohl Levao and/or Alesana Sunia potentially also not returning next season (all having already graduated), hopefully UH will also sign at least 2 interior OL in the Late Signing Period.

If we are shallow on immediate contribution to the Oline, former Kapolei and Vanderbilt Sean Auwae is in the transfer portal. Although he has only 1 year, he could be an immediate boost and give the younger guys time ramp up

Depends on if Levao, Eletise and Pryor al decide to return. If they do, no need for a one year guy.

UH's recent offer was a last-minute long shot.....so not surprising that Sanders committed to the Iowa State Cyclones today. https://twitter.com/Daveon4l/status/1350925579466338305

Eli Sanders RB from Chandler HS, Arizona....Dae Dae Hunter's former backfield running mate.....and a recent Boise State de-commit....also considering offers from Iowa & Iowa State.... https://twitter.com/Daveon4l/status/1347739865559879690

This kind of makes sense because they say that 2022 is the year when scholarships will be least available due to the NCAA pandemic response giving all players an additional year of eligibility.

Thus far I count 6 new incoming transfer portal recruits (Burton, Turner, Wyatt already signed + McKinney already enrolled + Parson & Tonga Jr. verbally committed) for UH....but probably more from the portal being recruited by UH.

Update Interview with Skilled 2021 Itawamba JUCO All Conference HB/RB Tyler Day

January 19, 2021
Written by Ryan Wright

As slick as the modern Spread attack is at the collegiate level, nothing gets done moving the chains down the field without that do-all athlete on the gridiron setting the grind-it-out tone for the offense. At Itawamba Community College, that all-around talent smashing facemasks on short-yardage plays while opening holes for his running backs was Tyler Day.

After a standout high school career with North Little Rock that included a 7A Arkansas state championship in 2017 (13-0) and a runner-up finish in 2018 (12-1), Day took his talents to the JUCO level working in with Itawamba’s attack as a running back, H-back, fullback, and tight end. At 6-4, 230-pounds, Day flashed the speed and power taking on defensive linemen and linebackers in the running game while hauling in passes in the aerial attack. The result of his hard work and efforts was MACCC All-Conference honors in 2020.

The focus for Day now turns to recruiting. After graduating from Itawamba in December, Day is looking for that four-year program fit. Interest has come in from Arkansas State, Central Florida, and Hawaii.
