IMO, the success of Mariota, Tagovailoa, and others have made every local kid dream big(ger). And that's a good thing. The point I want to make is the feeling that Hawaii will just "accept" them back. Is the world this nice? Or just Hawaii is this nice?
It isn't about being nice as much as it is about being smart. UH has the benefit of being the only football school in a state that produces a disproportionate amount of football talent. We have first crack at the David Veikune's and the Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea's when they need to come home, and we should always make room for them. The best tool for recruiting the local talent is previous local talent wearing the green and white, so whether they signed with UH from the beginning or were bouncebacks, the fact that they are here only helps make the case for the next group of recruits.
For the guys already on the team, it isn't any different than if Rolo brought in JC recruits who might take their spot. The best guys will play.
While there might be room to add returning local players......the reality is that there might not be any initial scholarships available for a new player......so they might just have to walk-on first.....if they really want to play for the "home team".....since returning local players (even if from a Pac-12 program) shouldn't assume nor expect that UH will have a scholarship readily available saved up for them if/when they want to return home to play.
While the best guys should always play, the difference is.....that the new JC recruits were specifically brought in on scholarship by UH to address a specific position need area as part of UH's recruiting strategy....whereas a local player who wants to transfer back may not necessarily always fit UH's position need area....so UH might decide not to offer the returning local player a scholarship (even if there's an initial scholarship available) if the player is not considered exceptional and/or has less than 2 years of playing eligibility left (which is the minimum playing eligibility that a new JC recruit would have coming into UH).
