Sad day.
Re: Dick Tomey passed away
For me, Coach Dick Tomey was the Father of the Modern Era of UH Rainbow Warrior Football. He was a Godsend who built the Football program to what it is today. The way they ALWAYS played the not just ranked but highly ranked teams tough-he could motivate his players like no other. Those were some of the Most Exciting Times! They were in portables when Coach Tomey arrived and because he did well the Athletics Complex was built soon after. It is shocking for me that they did not name it after Dick Tomey.
Coach Tomey will truly be Missed!!!

Re: Dick Tomey passed away
I'm in (Tucson) AZ, the out-pour of support for Dick Tomey is incredible to see as it comes from both sides, AZ and HI and both claim him to be their own. He was not a coach that just "coached" here. He left Hawaii for a better opportunity. Those tears at the press conference were real. AZ haters did chase him out of AZ (because the expectation of the Rose Bowl was that high). UA never went back to the glory days of Tomey. Tomey is still the best coach UA ever had. That speaks a lot about the man and as a coach. Sure, other college coaches may have won more of the big games, but IMO, there was no one better as a head coach in college football. I'll stand by that statement. Others can counter that with stats and records. But I'll remember how much Dick Tomey meant to two different schools, and two different cities.
Personally, I became a fan during the Tomey era. Staying up late at night watching the games on K5 (and/or was the KHNL13?)

Let’s not forget SJSU also. And I remember his short stint as a broadcaster. A real class guy.

No doubt Dick Tomey's name is up next, on the next UH athletic building, or major renovation.
UH need to do this "soon" while those who know him personally (former players, coaches, fans, etc) are still around.

Re: Dick Tomey passed away
Just want to know what you guys think on this, and I guess Tomey would be a good example.
Shaq's jersey is retired both by the Lakers and Heat. Rightfully so, as he was an active contributor with championships on both teams and cities.
University of Arizona can claim Tomey as GOAT. It's has been true, and still is today. There would be full support with no red tape to name the weight room, practice field, etc in his name.
How should UH "remember him?"
As much as UH and Hawaii love him, Tomey would rank #3. GOAT has to go to JJ. Wagner would have to be #2 because of Holiday Bowl (back then when it meant something) and Co-WAC title. Something that Tomey never accomplished (correct me if I'm wrong). However, Tomey has been celebrated as a coach at UH because he was not fired, and did not leave on bad terms, or left because he was pissed.
If you are UH AD or Admin, do you think you need to do something in memory? The answer does not need to be realistic, or based on budget or cost, just what you think as a member of this forum.

Re: Dick Tomey passed away
Although Tomey's Hawaii teams never went to a Bowl game:
- 7 of his 10 teams had winning records of 6 games or more (bowl eligible)
- 1 team went 5-5-1 (bowl eligible)
- The other 2 teams had 4 and 5 wins.

Dick Tomey's team was the first time I admired Hawaii football.
He was an outstanding coach at Arizona and SJSU. He will be missed.
Thanks for the memories. To the ohana: I'm deeply sorry for your loss. ALOHA!
