3/29/19 Practice Notes

Post by uhwarriors »

Just a short note on Saturday’s practice. It was a helmets only practice. I only watched the offense. First thing I noticed is that there are a lot more players practicing than last spring. It seems that there were twice as many olinemen and receivers. It bolds well for depth especially when the rest of the recruits report in the summer.

The QBs and receivers went against air a lot or simulated coverage as they practiced some of the base RNS plays. They were more in sync than most of last spring. The QBs threw more accurately, receivers seemed to be running the route adjustments better and a lot more balls were being caught. Since all the QBs (McDonald, Cordeiro, Uahinui) and most of the receivers are returners, there was less teaching and more refining. The focus of most of the teaching was with the new receivers (Melquise Stovall, Jonah Panoke, Grey Ihu and Dante McGee). All showed some skills, but they are in the early stages of learning the offense and have a lot to catch up. Another new receiver James Phillips didn’t practice.

He'll have plenty of opportunities to throw this spring but the other two guys coming in the fall have physical abilities but will need to learn the offense which takes a lot of time and reps.

Agreed. Uahinui is going to be 2 spring practices, 1 summer camp and 1 full season ahead in experience with the offense than anyone coming in this summer. With the RNS, talent is important but knowing the offense is more important. My guess is that Uahinui will start the season as the #3 and we'll see how fast the others come along.

Heard he watched practice on Friday. I don't think he was there on Saturday.

Kanawai Noa must be on spring break as he graduates in May. Maybe he will pursue a Masters in Hawaiian Studies :-
