Re: * Going Independent: Cal Poly and UC Davis to Big Sky *
Long Beach Press-Telegram article about how joining the WAC didn't make sense for Cal Poly and UC-Davis (mainly because they don't have money right now for the facility improvements needed) that mentions how UH may be going indy in football and joining the Big West for the other sports.
The decision by Big West members Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Davis to join the Big Sky for football makes perfect sense for both schools.
The economy makes the prospect of either school moving to Division I for football difficult. Both would have to expand their stadiums (both plan to, but when money is more readily available), and the Western Athletic Conference hardly seems like a destination considering its future losses (Fresno State, Boise State, Nevada) will reduce it to six low-wattage teams in six states.
http://www.presstelegram.com/moresports/ci_16047936Hawaii may follow BYU's path and become an independent for football. Then Hawaii may seek membership in the Big West, which is much more cost-effective travel-wise than those road trips to New Mexico State, Idaho and Louisiana Tech.
Re: * Going Independent: Cal Poly and UC Davis to Big Sky *
if hawaii were to go independent in football and join the big west in non-football sports...
then maybe hawaii can play uc davis and cal poly in football just to help fill the oct-nov part of the schedule. i know they are moving to the big sky for football, but they will still be conference members in the other sports and therefore should make the consideration to play us in football.
so basically, you would have byu, navy, army, notre dame, uc davis and cal poly. shouldn't be too hard to get unlv in the mix... they owe us, seeing how they're basically the ninth island.
throw in the nw schools (oregon, osu, udub and wsu)
continue the series with usc.
try to get arizona, arizona st on board.
look to former wac members if they're still playing d1 ball (idaho, sjsu, usu, nmsu)
and worst case... play mwc teams like boise, fresno, nevada, san diego st.
will not be easy, but i think an independent schedule is doable.
