Tepa decommits

Post by Irse »

One bad thing about early commitments
One of the fastest-rising players out West is Long Beach Poly (Calif.) defensive lineman Iuta Tepa. Tepa was an early commitment to Hawaii, but a strong senior season has brought forth a handful of scholarship offers. The lineman is now saying he is 'open' and will make a final decision after taking all his visits.

It's all good. I thought eventually we were going to lose a few early recruits, especially from these big time HSs like Poly. Hopefully the Poly LB will stick with us and help Tepa see the light. It's all in the recruiting business.
Often wrong...seldom in doubt!

Commit

com⋅mit   [kuh-mit]
verb, -mit⋅ted, -mit⋅ting.
–verb (used with object)
1. to give in trust or charge; consign.
2. to consign for preservation: to commit ideas to writing; to commit a poem to memory.
3. to pledge (oneself) to a position on an issue or question; express (one's intention, feeling, etc.): Asked if he was a candidate, he refused to commit himself.
4. to bind or obligate, as by pledge or assurance; pledge: to commit oneself to a promise; to be committed to a course of action.

Maybe he should have read this before he "committed" to us in the first place.

Door swings both ways - either side can pull their commit. And it's not 100% that he will go elsewhere. Let's not be the thing that pushes him over to someone else.

Substance matters.

I hope the coaches keep in contact with him still. In the end, if he wants to be a Warrior, he'll come. No ill feelings towards him if he don't though.

At least he announced this early so that Mack & Co. can keep recruiting. Our recruiting class still looks good and look forward to more recruits later whether it be Tepa or not.

I always wondered why more Hawaii kids didn't end up at UCLA. Looks like they are starting to target the same recruits -- Kevin Craft was just the beginning.

It doesn't say, but is he still tripping to Hawaii?

As a side note, I think part of UCLA targeting the same recruits is a function of them coming down a level and us going up a level. As they can't always compete with USC for the top Cali talent so they are having to expand their recruiting base. Which oddly enough coincides with UH being more aggressive on the mainland. So the net net is previously I think they recruited Cali primarily and rarely chased local prospects.
