Fall camp questions

Post by NelsonO »

Here are a few things that I’ll be watching for at the Warrior fall camp.

Of course, the biggest question at fall camp will be the selection of the starting QB. I understand there will be six QBs competing for the job. I also understand that the naming of the starter will de done sooner rather than later during fall camp.

If the starting QB is selected early in camp, will the starting receivers also be selected early in camp so that the primary receiving group can work with the first QB.

How much will the QB be under center.

I have heard that the running back(s) will be more involved in the passing game.

Who is going to play left tackle.

On defense, Keao Montielh and Desmond Thomas are the returning starters at safeties. But I think there will be heavy competition for these spots.

Ryan Mouton will be one cornerback, but who will be the other starting cornerback.

Can Fale Laeli, who missed spring practice, provide some depth on the defensive line.

And of course, I want to see how good the new recruits are.

as long as fale's injury is healed, im sure he will be providing more than depth. he was a starter last year.

2.5 Man Rotation at DT: Keala, Fale, Josh, Rocky, Vaughn
college football=drama for men.

Desmond Thomas and Ryan Mouton were our top pass defenders last year.

Ryan Mouton and Malcom Lane were the top k/o returners.

I think with players like Monteih and Soarez being hurt part of the year, adds to the feeling that Hawaii's defense is hurting. It's not.

If the starting QB is selected early in camp, will the starting receivers also be selected early in camp so that the primary receiving group can work with the first QB. Yes, Coach Mack will have it set up where 4 possible starters get trimmed down to just three with enough reps so that any one of them, along with the receivers will be adjusted to each other. How much will the QB be under center.

I have heard that the running back(s) will be more involved in the passing game.

Who is going to play left tackle. Aaron Kia

On defense, Keao Montielh and Desmond Thomas are the returning starters at safeties. But I think there will be heavy competition for these spots. Personally, I'd like to see MORE of "E-ROB". But all I have to say is "MANA SILVA".

Ryan Mouton will be one cornerback, but who will be the other starting cornerback. Jameel Dowling

Can Fale Laeli, who missed spring practice, provide some depth on the defensive line. More than that, Fale is exected to "start".

And of course, I want to see how good the new recruits are.

is it possible to wait until close to game time with Florida to name the starting QB? maybe that will help to prevent them from planning against us???

Interesting question. No doubt if it was possible A LOT of teams would do it, unless they have a "defined" QB.

NCAA regulations probably has something about submitting your depth chart in advance.

It doesn't matter when the starter is named because it won't be a secret and everyone will be talking about it. Practices are open to the media and observers and it will be very clear whether or not it is announced based on the reps each QB is getting.

Thanks for the insight NelsonO! Looking forward to your reports from fall practice!

While the competition at QB has gotten the bulk of the attention in the media, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the WR position develops. With 4 starters gone from last year, a plethora of returnees, and Mack's going hard after a handful of JC guys, there is a depth and competition that we did not see under JJ.

Some things I’m interested in seeing with the WRs:
1. Of the returning guys that saw PT last year, who will emerge (WR: Salas, Bain, Lane, Washington, etc.)?
2. Who of the JC guys will make an immediate impact (WR: Tinoco, JTaylor, Bell, Blount, Henry)?
3. Of the existing guys who we have not seen (at this position) who will make an impact (Pilares, Lofton, Medeiros, Linkner, etc.) and will any of the younger guys emerge?
4. How will Ron Lee sub and use the WRs in ways that are different than under JJ (More rotation, running plays, lining up out of the backfield, etc.)?

Bonus: How will we see Mr. Mouton used on the offensive side of the ball!!!

Man, I hope with liberal subbing and good, hard practices -- all those guys get to contribute on offense! Unlike the QB position, I see no reason why they can't all be getting touches. I hope we develop a juggernaut....a mistake-free offense that just pounds you, moves forward, and scores touchdowns. If we can rotate players successfully, we will wear down defenses.

Before I voice my two cents; NelsonO I've always enjoyed your photos as well as Scott's. Did you guys shoot stuff at the UH camps? Love to see the future recruits.

Back to the topic. What I'm hearing BIKurt is right there will be a lot of rotating. We need it especially on the WR side. FlyinManatee has a good summary at this position but add transfers Nasca and 2nd year freshmen Avery to the mix because they both could start at a lot of places like many that FM listed. They had great summers.

At QB coach Mac has recently stated that four guys are in the running for QB AND HE WILL PICK THE STARTER AFTER TWO WEEKS IN CAMP - NO LATER. I love that. I've seen too many teams who can't commit on a starter at QB at and it messes up the games, the season and the team moral. I think coach Mac knows this. So whoever he picks will get the reps and we will all support his decision. All four are potential starters - I'm glad it won’t be my call. He might put in a specialist who practiced certain plays for the week's game. I always wish they would use Funaki on a special series of plays with him lining up as a slot, QB pitches back to him and from there he runs or throws, sweeps with an option or reverses. It takes advantage of his particular talent and man would that confuse the defense. Yeah it's a trick play but WHICH ONE! I think only Alexander can red-shirt which makes the decision harder. And let's not all forget that new freshmen from Nevada High in California. He's a great fine, a walk on I think because he's not on the roster (should redshirt) and he got hurt early his senior year so he flew off the radar.

I think there is too many good LTs, They should make Hisatake or Letuli LGs or fight for RT. These two guys are also too talented not to play and they are better than other starters on the line. We have to put the best on the field!
RBs are solid with some rotation and situations. I hate to see Leon or small Daniel in on short yardage (hate to see an injury), use the big guys to pound it in or two backs. It is not giving the play away when you bring in a big back fake the handoff and pass it! Remember when JJ brought in the reserve QB's under center on short yardage - it worked but he didn't do it last year...humm? Mix it up with the run and shoot as our base.

Lots of good DLine talent and they will rotate like last year. Linebackers are solid long as we can keep Blaze from killing himself at practice. Hope to see more rotation at safety. Only negative was Thomas who was coming along at the end of last season - sticking hard at practice and at games but in the Sugar Bowl so many guys slipped right through his arms then ran for long TDs. Brought back bad memories from pre Glanville days which I try to forget. Anyway coach took him out and put untested and hard hitting E-Rob in and the bleeding stopped. Maybe Thomas had stage fright but we can't have that anymore in the NEW WARRIORS. Another level baby!

Can wait to see the speedy new guys comming in. Finally need to use second string on STs not fourth string. More talent on field, more blocking more speed and more scores or turnovers. Another level baby! Guest what Florida SURPRISE!!!!!!

hee hee. Man, I remember those pre-Glanville days. My continental friends would always say..."Hawaii is good, but they are all about offense.....no D."

We have not experienced excitement about our defense since the Tomey/Wagner years. The crazy thing is that this year's defense is quite possibly the best ever! Especially when you look at our Corners. Whew. I can never remember so many good players on defense. I cannot wait to see our boys bust some opposing offenses up.

HAWAII DEFENSE......man, it's been a long time coming.

Sorry, Alexander red-shirted in 05 so none of our top 6 QBs has any red-shirt years left so they all should at least suit up. It's so crowded @ QB that two of them has to play on the practice squad (Santos and Austin). Opposite of last year when JJ didn't recruit any QBs and I got worried.

Nothing is final concerning the lineman. If I remember correctly they were still fighting for the starting position and will do so starting fall camp. Trust me they will start the best and put in everyone else when needed to give them rest. My money is on the current starters.
