Just wondering why we don't see guys like Nasti anymore.

1. Do they get recruited to other school on the mainland?
2. Guys with that stature prefer to play another position?
3. They just don't make them like that anymore?

Guys that size with feet and speed like that are very hard to find. Ilaoa himself was not nearly that big when he arrived as a freshman and was a slot receiver his first year, so no one knew he was going to be the kind of RB he ended up being. Sometimes you just get lucky.

He was 175 lbs as a Frosh. I like he should have played at 215 vs 240.

He had great feet even with the extra girth. Most large backs simply lack his shifyness.

Excellent choice. Nasti got the pedigree, versatility and smarts to be a great RC. Highly personable and knowledgeable. A plus for potential recruits and their families.

As a 2001 recruit, Nasti was a 180lbs cat quick slotback

Nate was from the east coast. He was a skinny nobody, slot back who got fat and blossomed into an unstoppable running back with soft hands. I think he was the all-purpose yardage leader in the nation for a while. No. They have never made anything like Nate...before or since. He is a well-spoken, chill dude though. I could see him being a great recruiting coordinator.

Nate was a special player who just had the "it" factor. He was highly recruited out of high school, but made the decision to play for JJ when his father's military kuleana got him and the family stationed out here. He was a special type of player from day one. He reminded me of another legendary high school player Georgie Boy Ornellas from St. Louis back in the day. He too simply had the "It" factor. You simply don't find that kind of player all the time.

i don't think he was a nobody, from what i remember he was pretty well recruited by some big schools. I don't remember him being that skinny, well compared to when he completed eligibility, i guess he was skinny. I think the only real knock on him was his size and conditioning. Although he did outrun the entire utah state team on that long run his senior year. hi did have short arms and maybe scouts were worried about the possibility of fumbling in the NFL. if he kept a 220-225 weight range, kept his speed and quickness, and the fact he got drafted to the eagles, he could have been a replica of brian westbrook.

I don't remember him "thin" too. Must be the plate lunch. Easy to gain weight in Hawaii.

Ilaoa did not get playing time when he was thin, that's why we don't remember him. He had a lot of cousins on the team, especially from the offensive line, so when they ate, he ate. I remember reading that JJ was not happy about Ilaoa's weight and conditioning, along with the injuries. He didn't really blossom until his senior year.

heres an article from 2001. 5'9 190 isn't a small thin slotback for a freshman. I'm sure eating with the lineman didn't help (i remember reading that too), but I think he already had a decent weight coming in. of course it wasn't his final playing weight at 240, but it was heavier than CO or Pilares weights as freshman.
