Kekaula was KITV’s assistant news director and Spectrum Sports’ play-by-play announce for University of Hawaii football telecasts.
But the multi-talented Kekaula was best known for his decades-long career as a sportscaster, where he delivered reports with the vibrancy to match his bright custom-tailored aloha shirts. His contacts were so strong in the UH sports community that colleagues nicknamed him the “General Manager.”
Kekaula also was a talented musician and composer. His friendship circle did not have boundaries. Kekaula was embraced by the music community to law enforcement.
“We have heavy hearts this morning as our ‘ohana has lost its mighty wings,” the Kekaula family wrote in a statement. “Robert Kaleimomi Kekaula passed peacefully at 8:25 a.m. surrounded by his family. He lived his life his own way and was so much to so many people. His heart was full of love for his family, sports, and most of all, music.
“Our wings are broken but we will fly again one day. And Robert will fly besides us and continue to guide us along the way. Mahalo to everyone who touched his life along his journey. Aloha ‘oe to our father, partner, brother, uncle, friend. We ask for privacy as we get through this difficult time.”
News of Kekaula’s passing spread nationally. Larry Beil, who first hired Kekaula as a KGMB intern, was emotionally remembering his close friend.
“He lifted himself from nothing and turned himself into one of the most popular sportscasters,” Beil said. “It was from pure hard work. … He worked really hard to always help other people. I really respect that about him.”

Rest In Aloha Robert.
He was the prefect combination of a broadcast professional run through the local boy filter. He was perfect for us and became a favorite among those who would tune in late on Saturday to watch our Warriors.
He was one of a kind and we were blessed to have him in our sports world.
A thought hit me a short time ago and I just need to say it…

One of the voices that no matter where you are, if you hear him, you know you are hearing someone from home.

Son, throw the spear as far as it can go
Robert's play by play was fun to hear~
His monotone, like a car shifting gear~
He would go from low to high, oh my dear~
His voice escalating into a cheer~
He would hoop and loop music to my ear~
Especially if green was on a tear~
His patent love for the home team was clear~
Robert did it his way without fear~
He wore green on his sleeve with all sincere~
The jeers and mocks he had little care~
It was in his love, that green be so revere~
Now in shock we look back with a tear~
A good tear because he had a happy career~
He, now, would want his team to have a good year~
Robert has now left the room, oh my dear~
Condolences to the Robert Kekaula family and friends

I can remember some on a Fresno State forum loving him even though they didn’t agree with a word out of his mouth.

Re: Voice of Warrior Football Robert Kekaula Has Died
Being away from home in the Army while I was station in Alaska and later as a student, I got really homesick. But in the early 2000s being able to hear Robert Kekaula and Bobby on the sports radio over the internet broadcasting games really helped. Even called into the show after the games a few times. Robert was a great sports broadcaster and voice for UH football. Will miss his voice. Rest in Aloha and condolences to his Ohana.
