If you're talking PC's... build your own.
Or get someone like TigerDirect to slap a custom build together for you..
Start with a budget...
Select a Barebones unit at about half your budget... add RAM.. and the Best Video card you can afford. I suppose you could take the harddrive out of your existing unit and put it in your new unit...but nothing beats a Solid-State Drive for your OS, if you can budget for it.
Put all your money in the a great graphics card, RAM and a good chip. The other stuff shouldn't cost too much money. I guess fans are important for keeping it cool but you don't have to splurge on a water-cooled system.

Whoa... don't overlook a good motherboard... the cheap stuff won't cut it.

that really only makes a difference if you're lookin ginto heavy overclocking and SLI/crossfire.
a board in the cheap range (100-130) will easily cover your needs if you dont crossfire or SLI cards.
When in doubt, burn it down.

We are talking about a gaming rig, right?
yes. if you arent going to go with a multiple graphics card setup, you dont need an expensive motherboard.
My experience with boards have always shown that better, slightly more expensive boards simply perform better. At least stick with a better brand name. If price is an issue, get a slightly older version of a recommended board... I'd always check reviews on mobos... some are real lemons.

yeah, thats true.. i always stuck by asus and MSI for motherboards though.
im not saying you can go real cheap, but its usually unnecessary to get some of the more expensive ones.
