Burnout Paradise up for download on PSN Thursday, Sept. 25

by Randy Nelson
Sep 22nd 2008 4:10PM

Image

As announced during last month's EA Studio Showcase event, Burnout Paradise will become the first previously retail-only PS3 game offered for download in its entirety from the PlayStation Store. Developer Criterion Games has updated its Burnout blog with news that the game will be available this Thursday, Sept. 25, as part of the store's weekly update (which usually goes live at 2 p.m. PST).

The game download will cost $29.99, the same price as the disc-based retail release. If you don't already own Burnout Paradise, this is a great opportunity to get in on a superb racer ... without having to bust out the game disc every time you want to play. No stats on the download's size have been revealed, but we've contacted EA for details and will update when we get them. Criterion has announced that, upon starting the game, buyers will be prompted to download all of the (free) content that it has cooked up since launch, including last week's Bikes Pack.

Never liked the idea for a download when I can own the CD in case something happens, but I played the demo for this and it was nice. $30 seems like a good deal for it.

Burnout Paradise Goes Back To The Future

11:40 AM on Fri Nov 7 2008
By Mike Fahey

Image

Criterion continues to deliver the Burnout Paradise goodness, this time with a preview of a very special vehicle coming next year as part of their new Legendary Cars series. The Jansen 88 Special is modeled after the Jansen P12, but it's received a few modifications. Once you fill up the boost gauge, trigger it and the car leaves a trail of dual flames behind it, much like a certain modified DeLorean DMC-12 does when you reach 88 miles per hour in it.

Sweet, but that's not all. Hit the jump to see what happens when you hit the L3 button.

Image

That's right. This motherf***er hovers.

The Jansen 88 Special is the first of four Legendary Cars being introduced to the series as next year, along with the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and the GT Nighthawk. Each car will be available for purchase separately, or as part of a discounted pack of four.

Generally I am not a big fan of purchasing extra vehicles, but when said extra vehicle can possibly break the space time continuum I take exception.

Just in case you thought Criterion were bullshitting you with their Back To The Future promises, here's a clip of the game's take on the Jansen P12. Flames? Yup. Hovering? Yup.

New Burnout Legendary Cars Channel KITT, Ecto-1, And The General Lee

By Mike Fahey
1:20 PM on Fri Jan 9 2009

Criterion continues to rock the 80's as they reveal the remaining three Legendary DLC Cars for Burnout Paradise, which bear striking similarities to the most well-known vehicles of that decade.

Carrying on the proud tradition of the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters is the Manhattan Spirit, a slow but stunt-friendly vehicle with a hidden secret. Then we have the Carson Nighthawk, which has the slick look and strobing lights of Michal Knight's ride. Get it? KITT Carson? Tee hee! Last, but definitely not least, there's the Cavalry Bootlegger. It may bear the Mexican flag instead of the Confederate flag, but old 01 is every bit the General Lee from Hazzard County.

The three new Legendary Cars join the previously announced Jansen 88, which of course pays homage to the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Never before have I wanted to pay for DLC so badly.

Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box For February

By Mike Fahey,
9:00 AM on Fri Jan 16 2009

Image

Criterion Games today announces an early February release date for Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box, gathering all of the DLC, adding a new Party Pack, and marking the game's PC debut, all at once.

Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box will be available in retail stores on February 5th, giving new PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and now PC players a chance to catch up on all of the updates Criterion has released over the past year in an all-in-one package. You get the motorcycle update, the Cagney Update, and the all-new Party Pack, which features pass-the-controller style challenges perfect for your next social gathering, possibly.

If you've already got Burnout Paradise for the 360 or PS3, the Party pack will be available as premium DLC day and date with the retail release. If you've yet to get behind the wheel of the game, February 5th is the perfect time to do so.

Super-sized Burnout Paradise update detailed, coming Feb. 6

by Ross Miller
Jan 23rd 2009 1:55PM

Image

Burnout Paradise's first-ever premium content pack is coming February 6, and even if you aren't willing to dole out the dead presidents, Criterion's giving you another reason to mark that date. Coming alongside the Party Pack DLC is a rather hefty title update ... and it's free!

Highlights include an in-game store, an in-game access to the Criterion Games Network website (details to come; PC and PS3-only), enhanced visuals to allow for more convenient smashing, a restart event option (yay!), easier barrel rolls and some some vehicle and game mode tweaking. Hit up the developer's site for full details, and check out PS3 Fanboy for a full list of the new Trophies.

One Year Later: Burnout Paradise

Posted by Stephen Totilo
on 1/26/09 at 3:00 pm.

One year ago, EA released “Burnout: Paradise.” How does the game hold up one year later?

***

Game: “Burnout: Paradise”
Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Criterion Games
Publisher: EA
Release Date: 1/22/08

What it was about: The technologically ambitious developers at Criterion Games decided to create the ultimate open-world racing game, re-writing the core rules of their own franchise. In the process, they began in January 2008 what was essentially an ongoing conversation with their fans as they expanded and adapted the game throughout the calendar year.

What was cool about it: “Burnout Paradise” was arguably the first console game built for the Facebook generation. It is a never-lonely game that, even when played solo, streams notification after notification of how one’s friends have been performing in the game. Every time the player turns onto another road of the massive Paradise City, the fastest time raced by someone on your friends’ list is displayed on the screen — unless you rule the road. Every time you start flipping your car in the damage-tallying Showtime mode, the top destruction score earned by your friends pops up. The front-end of the game was redesigned after the game’s release to look like a Facebook newsfeed. The game’s developers were so forward-thinking about connectivity that they didn’t even require players to enter lobbies to begin multiplayer games; instead, they just let players tap a button and enter a shared Freeburn mode.

Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box Trailer

By Mike Fahey,
12:00 PM on Mon Jan 26 2009

In case you were still on the fence about picking up a copy of Burnout Paradise, here's the official trailer for the Ultimate Box version of the game coming next month.

With all of the updates Criterion has delivered since the game initially launched, Burnout Paradise has slowly morphed from a nice game that I enjoyed somewhat into a title that I believe everyone should own. They've really done an amazing job of supporting the title, setting the bar for post-release support for console games.

If you've still not hopped on the bandwagon and crashed it into another bandwagon, look for the full version with all the bells and whistles to hit stores early next month for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and now PC.

Rumor: Police cars, pursuits returning to Burnout Paradise via DLC

by David Hinkle
{ Jan 29th 2009 at 11:30AM }

Image

It seems the lazy and inattentive police officers of Paradise City have begun to frown upon the frantic racing and wreckage filling their city, with rumor indicating the return of police cars or possibly pursuits to Criterion's racer. Some scenes depicting the blues in red-hot chase have already spilled onto the internet, as you can see in our gallery below.

You can see the potential pursuit mode that showed up in the new Burnout Store right here, as well as images for a new cop in the game. Will these become available as DLC in the future? We've asked for comment and we'll get back to you as soon as we get word.

OK, super short review.

Basically, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box for the PC is an awesome port from the consoles! Of course with one exception... the graphics are even better (of course!). The controls are as tight as can be and basically the game plays exactly as it did on the consoles.

As far as the graphics, it doesn't seem that you need a super duper PC to run it with decent graphic settings. My computer is over a year old (Quad 6600, 4 GB memory, 8800 GTS) and I can play at high settings at 1920x1200 with silky smooth gameplay.

My new favorite racing game on the PC!

Burnout Paradise 'Cops and Robbers' Screenshots

by Chris Faylor
Feb 09, 2009 3:52pm CST

Image

Following last Friday's announcement of the "Cops and Robbers Pack," developer Criterion has revealed the first screenshots of the forthcoming Burnout Paradise DLC.

Image

Image

Coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Burnout Paradise, the premium-priced add-on will bring "the thrills and spills of cops and robbers car chases" to the open-world racer, producer Jeremy Chubb wrote on the official PlayStation.Blog.

Criterion hasn't nailed down an exact price or release date for Cops and Robbers only specifying that it'll hit after the Legendary Cars, Toy Cars and Boost Specials packs.
