Baseball@Murakami 2020-03-05

Post by GoBows2014 »

A small but enthusiastic crowd was on hand for Thursday night baseball at Murakami stadium, the first of four games against Oregon. Turnouts on Thursday nights are usually light, tonight's crowd additionally hampered by wet weather plus Men's volleyball just a few hundred yards away. Volleyball fans include lots of Basebow fans who opted for a clean and dry, climate controlled environment tonight. Wise choice for many, since Manoa mist got serious enough to drive fans out of the lower seats several times in the early innings.

But UHBB fans that showed up and stayed at Murakami had a special treat tonight, a come from behind 6-4 win! The crowd was mostly soggy and silent early, as Oregon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first and padded that with another run in the third. Logan Paulsen started but did not last long, pulled in the 3rd inning for Buddie Pindel. Buddie started strong, but also did not last long, as 'Bows barely scratched one run across and stranded plenty in scoring position and Vince Reilly came in as the 2nd reliever. Oregon boyz are big, and most of the lineup can hit, this isn't a ding on UH pitching, they are just a tough club to pitch.

The story of the night was when Oregon went to their bullpen after their starter had mostly shut us down for five innings. Looks like Oregon has the same weakness as UH has shown too many times, an early lead with the game under control (4-1), then middle relievers let it slip away. Oregon went through 2 or 3 pitchers in a hurry, and quickly went from letting UH get back in the game to minimizing the damage. Bows scored 5 in the bottom of the 6th and brought the crowd to life! Scariest moment was when Matt Wong took a heater on a direct hit to his helmet. He bounced right up and shook off both Trap and the trainer who met him at first, sure hope there aren't any long term after effects, that smack on his helmet was so loud and hard the entire stadium gasped.

But for exciting baseball, as dead quiet as Murakami was through six innings? Became raucous and rowdy for the last 3 with the 'Bows hitting and scoring, and the home town fans having fun. Jeremy Wu-Yelland came in for the final innings and did a superb job of closing, holding Oregon scoreless even though they were putting runners on. All in all a happy and soggy night at Murakami!

Next Oregon games at 6:35 PM Friday and Saturday, then Sunday at 1:05 PM. Go Bows!
