UHBB: Vanderbilt Who?

Post by GoBows2014 »

So proud of our UH Men's baseball team bringing it on the road against Vanderbilt. Basebows *nearly* took the series!

Not only did we hand the defending D1 National Champs their first loss of the season yesterday (2/29), we should have won the game today (3/1) as well! We were on the board early, with Kaler/Demeter/Fogel all hitting well and putting 2 runs up top of the 3rd. Vanderbilt came back with 2 in the bottom of the 4th inning and another run in the 5th.

So we are one run down for a couple of inning until Matt Wong's longball to left in the 7th (his first HR in D1) that tied the game. Then we scrapped for several innings to keep it 3-3 through 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. Top of the 11th, Fogel/Demeter/Kaler/Baeza plated two big runs. We are up 5-3 which should have been good for the win. But bottom 11th? They got a man on, got him around Score now 5-4. They get two men on, but we have two outs. One out to win the game!! And we gave up a walkoff 3-run shot!
Sigh. *sooo* close!

The whole ball club is hitting well, and not just singles, lots of extra bases and clutch hits that are scoring runs. Looks like one of the best offenses the Bows have had in many years. Pitching is coming around as well, our hurlers limiting Vanderbilt to fairly low scoring games is testimony to that. Happy to see our soft spots at middle relievers and closers getting stronger with new talent like Tai Atkins and others showing real toughness in their first year at this level.

But playing heads up ball with Vanderbilt should give the rest of our opponents notice, Bows can't be taken lightly. And maybe, just maybe, those D1 polls that ranked UH baseball around 220 to 230 of about 300 teams? Might bump us up a few spots.

Congrats to Trap, coaches, and team for bringing well deserved honor and recognition to our home team! Go Bows!

It might have been nice to see Kumar Rocker in the second game. Too bad he's not draft eligible this year but next year. Rated 2nd best RHP in high school but drafted in the 38th round. Wonder if he will go in the 1st round next year.
