Wahine Basketball 2019

Post by shrek2 »

It looks like Hawaii has a competitive Women's Basketball team for the 2019 season. I watched my first game against UCD and Lauren Rewers looks like a good go to inside player but her performance goes down the longer she plays. The whole team did a great job of blocking out for the rebounds so there were no second shots. It looks like the ladies who are thicker normally get the calls on the fouls. I understand now why Mackenna Woodfolk was called for fouls in the previous two games is likely because she played against taller and thicker ladies underneath. Even though they arrive at the same spot at the same time, benefit is given to the bigger lady. Congrats to the Wahine for beating the 1st/2nd place team in the preseason poll in UCD 65-60. They have a shot at the title.

The women look like they have larger motions to make three pointers so unless they complete the motion they will miss. So often in the lost against CSUN you could see the women not going through their full motion when taking the three pointers. During shoot arounds or taking shots alone, they have to imagine being defended so they don't tense up during game time. One thing that Hawaii had over CSUN was the ability to move the ball around in and out of the paint to get the open shot. They cannot stop taking three pointers though after missing most of them in the first two quarters. They gotta continue taking threes unless they are playing for the next game. Lauren Rewers looked better than the two time Big West MVP.

It was team basketball by the Wahine against Cal Poly. Cal Poly did lack talent but they did have an inside presence that could make the left handed hook shot. Tia Kanoa and Mackenna Woodfolk played really well in moving the ball. The Salanoa sisters aren't afraid to mix it up with the big girls inside so there's no psych out. Rewers didn't have her best game but she helped get significant rebounds against the taller lineup.

Wahine beats UCSB. When Courtney Middap or Amy Atwell makes an early three pointer, it seems to relax the team to not be tentative when taking shots. Rewers looks like she is key to defense against a taller team. Tia Kanoa can move the ball up the court but made two bad passes, one to a double teamed Woodfolk and one cross court pass when the defense sagged off of her giving her space to take the shot. All in all, great win for the Wahine who are 3-2 in the conference.

Looked like Hawaii started out with a tall lineup which doesn't work against a faster, shorter UCR lineup. No stopping on Jannen Otto after she was scoring at will. Should have been more physical underneath as it seemed like the shorter UCR front line was pushing the Wahines around until UH went with the smaller lineup. Difference in the score maybe reflected in the free throws 12 for 21. Alexander really looks good in the full court press but it would be nice to see that three pointer go in for her. Lob passes and cross court passes were being intercepted throughout the game. They gotta avoid those passes except for the taller wahines.

Wahine beat Cal Poly by 18. Three key players was Lauren Rewers playing tough making great baskets with back to the basket plus tough D, Jaden Alexander who plays tough D always, but then turns it on with her offense with drives and threes. Then Julissa Tago makes three threes. Big to get those shots. Looks like Woodfolk has to take the shot from the free throw line to open up her drive to the basket. Gotta say that the producer for Spectrum Sports has to do a better job with replays of questionable calls and focusing on the coaches face while the ball is in play.

They almost blew a 6 point lead with less than a minute to go. Woodfolk fouls a three point shot and UCI sinks three free throws. On the next Hawaii possession the ball is thrown away. Hawaii was lucky to come away with a two point win. With that being said, more of the wahine teams in the Big West are even so Hawaii should have a chance to go all the way. I like Rewers continue taking the shots under the basket even if she misses.

UH Wahine basketball were not prepared to play anybody today when they played the Beach. In the first half they had a 16% FG taking 31 shots and something like 2 for 11 from three. By the third quarter they were 2 for 20 from 3 so 10% shooting and less than 30% FG so I guess if they were playing their game, they beat themselves. Gotta say it was Laura Beemon for not preparing the girls on making their shots. Also Tia Kanoa had 6 TO, tossing two lobs on a double team to the center. Maybe they had In and Out burgers for team meal; poor choice. Bright spot was Myrrah Joseph who played a tough post position, brought up the team FG % and scored 15 and only listed at 5'10.

Against UCSB, Hawaii came out with a great shooting percentage. It like the Spectrum announcer said they didn't know which team was going to show up the Dr Jeckell or Dr (Mr) Hyde. They were shoot the threes from the chest region or lower so they looked better. They also were bringing the ball up a lot faster than they did against the Beach. I love the two Aussies for UH with Middap looking great to take over the point position next year. Jaden Alexander just looks like an athlete with feet out on defensing passes and constantly battling reminds me of Avea on the men's team.

Whoever is the producer for Spectrum Sports needs to remember not to show long shots of the coach's faces while the ball is in play. Nobody really wants to see the coach's face unless the ball is not in play.

Against Long Beach, four ladies deserve to share best player, Middap for hitting 5 of 8 from 3, Tia Kanoa for key steals and rebounds, Woodfolk for hitting 8 of 8 free throws and scoring 12 as well as being able to help break the press, and Joseph for her quickness under the basket in getting rebounds and putting up the shots like a post and driving.

Can't believe one of the half time commentators said that Woodfolk's presence was not felt. She was the one tall individual that could help break the press by being able to handle the ball at around half court and find the open ball handlers. The press is essentially what killed Hawaii with turnovers all game even in the half court offense. I can't believe that Laura Beeman has the players standing around in a 2-3 zone. All the other team has to do is stand around watching nobody move. I was yelling move at the tv to get the players to move. You can EASILY keep track of players when they stand around. So MOVE in a zone as well as a man to man. At this point in the season, it's hopeless without Woodfolk. Before this, they had a chance to take the Big West. Myrrah Joseph is their scoring threat from the post at 5'10. She probably is the player to watch.

Last nights game was another painful game to watch. I started channel surfing during commercial breaks and timeouts and then ended up not watching altogether.

UCD has some smooth three point shooters with the Eaton girls but you could see it in warmups that everybody had nice three point form. With that said, they will probably not make it past the first or second round of the NCAA regional. I wish the Wahine will practice going left all off season.

HSA needs to upgrade their class and knowledge of the game. In Brian McInnis article about the basketball woes, he again states that "Wahine junior forward Makenna Woodfolk was leaving the program immediately because she is pregnant." Why can't they, at this point that Woodfolk left for personal reasons. Upgrade their class a little bit. Then he goes on to say, "Would Woodfolk have made the difference in what was a 53-48 loss? It’s possible. " First of all, yes, a leading scorer and rebounder from the team will make a difference on any team. It's a rhetorical question answered wishy washy.
